Oil leak from oil cooler/oil filter housing

Thanks for sharing this, I discovered I have this issue myself after changing the engine lube oil yesterday. You didn't need to bleed the cooling system after, right?

Is yours leaking again? Another member above says his is leaking again after replacing!

No need to bleed the system if you clamp the lines

I sold the car 2 months ago, but never leaked again after I did it.

I replaced my oil filter housing/cooler in Jan 2023 @ 135,000km (it was leaking badly and left a small pool of oil on ground) and now my new one is starting to show signs of a minor leak again @ 160,000km. Wtf

Hi, felloe GTA'er here, did you buy aftermarket parts, or replace only the gaskets and not the entire cooler and oil filter housing?

good question

Can anyone confirm?!?! Do G70's not leak in the same place?!?!
There's no aluminum housing for 3.3 turbo engine. There's aluminum replacement for na 3.3, which doesn't have cooler.

Never mind. You’re right. I missed that little detail. BMS makes a metal cap but not a replacement housing.

Has a more permanent solution been found for this? I still have 4yrs/63k left on my factory warranty. Obviously I'll get to the years before the miles but I'd like to not have to be dealing with this every couple years.

This has kind of bothered me as well since I purchased this car. Every time I lift the hood my eyes go to that plastic oil filter

set up and just wonder what they were thinking. Is there a way to use a universal oil relocator adapter to go to a spin on filter?

I have no warranty for this car since we live in the US and this is a Canadian GT limited so this might be a problem going forward.

I have seen aluminum options on other forums and hope that is an option going forward. Otherwise, I always hope that they put

the o ring in correctly and it's properly torqued when we get the oil changed.

Mine is currently leaking, have about 37k on the car, was bought new. Due soon for an oil change. The shitty part is that they won't order the parts beforehand until they look at the car. I already know that's the issue. So basically, they'll look at it, then they'll say they need to order parts. So I'm making an appointment to either bring the car back for another appointment or they'll have to give me a loaner anyways, kinda redundant.

No leaks at 20k so hoping for the best.

If you're sure it's the oil filter cover and you don't want to wait for them to "diagnose" that it's the oil filter cover and have your car sit while the part arrives, you could always go to the parts dept before you get your oil changed. Order the part yourself and bring it with you during the oil change. Ask them to swap it regardless and to return the part that was originally on the car to you.

Oh, I guess I didn't even think of that, thanks for the tip.

The reason why the dealers have to do it this way is if it's a warranty claim, there's an internal process of submitting a claim, getting the claim approved by head office, then they can order the parts, but I do agree it's an inconvenience.

My OE oil filter housing and new oil cooler came in, and I ordered new bolts too. I'll install mine next oil change and do a how-to video by April. It seems like the problem might come back, so I plan to assemble the oil cooler to the filter housing in advance, and possibly use some gasket maker as a reinforcement for sealing.

So I'm currently at the dealership. It's the oil filter housing. Apparently, that part isn't covered under the 10yrs/100k powertrain warranty. It's only under the 5yrs/60k, which of course I'm nowhere near the mileage (38k) but I'm over the 5yrs. They're trying to see if they will cover it completely in "good faith" or cover part of it since I keep the car in top notch condition and the the mileage is low.

Fingers crossed..............
This is gonna be an ongoing problem unfortunately. I can't be the only one with this issue.

I replaced the gaskets between the cooler and the housing first, it lasted about a year. Then, a year later I got a leak again. I decided to replace the whole Oil Filter Housing and it came with new gaskets! The housing if plastic and I assume that heat from the engine and oil cooler will eventually warp it.

I added a little bit of black RTV on both ends (Oil Cooler to Oil Filter Housing, and Oil Filter Housing to Engine Block) before installation of the new one. The new Oil Filter Housing cost about $70 on Kia Parts Direct and if you are mechanically inclined the job is pretty easy to do. Drain your oil first, then pinch the coolant lines to the oil cooler with a pair or small locking pliers (I cut some small 1/2 hose and put it on the tips of the pliers to prevent kinking or puncturing the car hoses), Remove the oil filter and drain all the oil of the housing, then remove the 4 bolts holding the housing to the engine first, once the housing is removed you can disconnect the coolant lines (It's easier this way), once you have disconnected the coolant lines just fish it out towards the driver side.

Remove the old Oil Filter Housing from the Oil Cooler, clean the oil cooler really good and add a small dab of black RTV sealant next to the gasket (NOT ON THE GASKET) and join them and torque them from 14.5 ft lbs up to 15.9 ft lbs.
