Trim looks like crap

Now, go forth and make the rest of your car as clean as the molding! ;):P (My suspicion is that this oxidation is exacerbated by infrequent baths.)
Hey guys, I just wanted to do a little DIY post to bring back your windows moldings to their original aspect.

The windows molding on my Stinger just look has dull as your's. A fiew days ago, I notice something when I scratched one of them with my nail. It look like their was a thin layer of oxidation on the molding, that makes look them dull.

So I've tried something that I've already tried on chrome moulding, it's called Compound. I've used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. You only have to poor a little bit of the product on a cloth and scrub the molding. Try to avoid touching the rubber and bring a wet cloth to clean the compound after.
I've done this to the molding on my car and they look like brend new now ! No need to replace them.

Why do they look so dull after a year or two ? I think that this is caused by a phenomenon called oxidation, that is caused by the rain/sun/hard water/abrasive that they put on the road (winter country)/ etc... Oxidation can occurs on the paint too.
That's why it is recommended to decontaminate the paint, if necessary, polish it with a compound or a glaze and, minimum every year, apply wax on the paint. I don't think we can use wax on the molding, I would not recommend it anyway.

I've put some picture so you can see the results before and after.

LOL come live in Quebec, you will see that it's hard to have a clean car for more then 2 days at this time of the year.
My other suspicion for the molding to become like this, maybe it's caused by the soap that is used in a contact less carwash. The soap and other product they use are juste to strong. Not like the soap we buy in a auto parts shop.

I know that the Great White North comes down hard on cars. But I've accustomed myself to washing daily if necessary. It's actually fun, the challenge to keep a car looking literally spotless. My "half hour wash" method makes this possible. If necessary, I take the car first to a hand wand wash to get the major grime off if the weather that day did a real plastering. Of course, if you park your car outside, you can forget what I have to say about this. Out of the weather, out of the sun, is a luxury I'll happily admit.

(I wonder if I'd become demoralized if I had to park the Stinger outside; or would investment in high quality ceramic coating turn the trick? Making it possible to keep the entire surface clean with minimal effort is the key to enjoying a car wash.)

You definitely want to wax the molding , its keeps the water spots off , I use Megs Cleaner Wax to remove water spots and it last for months .........megs.webp

Ceramic coating should do the trick.
Ceramic coating is pretty much pointless if he regularly visits the contactless self-washes, the chemicals that are used in those coin-washer things are so strong that they will just wash off the ceramic.

I am having discoloration in just one piece of trim on my car. Is this something I should try to get them to fix under warranty or do myself?

I was able to order the “Black Chrome” trim piece today. I bought the least expensive piece to test it out. If it looks ok then I will order all of the other pieces for the rest of the car.

Does anyone know how to remove the trim pieces? Do they pop off or slide off?

Did you try rubbing compound on it first? Those 6 pieces of trim are stainless steel. You will eventually encounter the same problem with new trim. Need to wax it frequently or otherwise protect it.

I tried the rubbing compound and it just rubbed the finish off of the trim. It looks dull now and didn’t fix the issue. I am going to treat the new pieces so that won’t tarnish like the original trim pieces did.

There isn't likely any finish on the trim. What you were doing is rubbing the oxidation off. But it is pretty labor intensive to fully clean it so that it looks new again. The finish is a satin look and is reflective but not quite mirror like. It's not a mirror like coating like the black chrome on some of the plastic parts like the mirror housings.

Same issue on my 2019 GT2.
Used WD-40 on a clean cotton rag and took about 80% off without much fuss.
Will use a brush when I have time this weekend.

I tried this stuff as previously mentioned. If I spent more time it maybe could be a little better but I'm happy with the results. We'll see how long it lasts...

My car is ceramic coated. This discolouration still happened.

Taking it in today for the dealer to look at it.
Wow. o_O I haven't heard of any ceramic coated trim going discolored until your post. That's upsetting: to think that a protective as touted as ceramic doesn't actually protect against this fairly common complaint. Is there no satisfactory preventive for faulty pieces, then? It looks like the only possible fix that is anything like "permanent" is going to be wrap.

(I'm always tucking these anecdotes away in my head, just in case I have to deal with any of them; and now, ceramic coating has probably taken a fatal hit.)

To be fair, I live in an incredibly harsh climate. When the dealer replaces the trim I'm probably going to go the wrap route as well. Or PPF those pieces to keep the original colour.

Thanks, I might give mine a go too.
I've ordered a set out of South Korea for $220, but might try to clean these up in the mean time.
Dealership replaced 3 of them no questions asked. Might want to give that a try. This should not be happening after a couple years . Not a fan of car washes either but the molding still should not degrade that rapidly in my opinion.

Yeah one of the weak spots of the car. My coating is physically coming off, I can actually remove it with my finger nail on one side. I bought some wraps on amazon to try. But maybe before I do I will ask the dealer to replace. Just don’t want all those rubber seals getting messed up by the dealer.
