3.3TT Exhausts - loudest to quietest

I've never heard the MBRP in person, but I have the Borla with ARK mid-pipes and stock primaries. Also, using Akrapovic oval exhaust tips.

Adding the Borla over stock made it louder for sure, but better, more aggressive tone IMO. Sounds deeper at low RPM and comes alive at 2-3k. It made the car start to give some burble/rumbles on down shift or foot off, which is nice.

Adding the ARK mid-pipes made the sound deeper and the burbles/rumbles more frequent (I get them in comfort mode sometimes). More spirited driving will get a pop or two in sport mode. You can even hear the turbos from the exhaust if you listen closely. Here's a video comparison I did a while back when adding the mid-pipes (Instagram).

I recommend the aftermarket tips for anyone worried about in-cabin noise. They really help the sound stay outside of the car (past the bumper) as opposed to reverberating inside.
I like my factory tips is it possible to keep those and connect the Borla to them?

No and yes. The factory “tips” are really just pass throughout that are part of the bumper trim. They have to be removed to add aftermarket tips.

The good news is that there are chrome oval tips that will look just like the stock ones once installed.

There’s another exhaust thread around here where someone did it. Looks totally stock.

Yeah, everybody says borla sounds great. We could order a mbrp and midpipes for what a borla cost though, and that may sound better for the money

I heard a few people who ran that style had some minor melting of the bumper around the tips due to the tips being connected and getting hot. That is avoided with most other styles of tips people have been using because they are two layers instead of one like the chrome tips.

There are two layer chrome tips but they look pretty shit from behind the car IMO. Obviously YMMV with regards to the melting issue, just what has happened to a few people and worth mentioning.

Just want to add in here that I’m just super impressed with my Kunstwerk Racing EVC, valves closed its got a nice growl and valves open it absolutely howls, no resonance or raspiness. I have the valves mapped to the 2/3 buttons on my mirror to open and close, with the valves closed perfect for driving around town.

Anyone find a HIGHER pitched sound? Kinda like Formula one/LFA .......I realize that the RPM range isn't the same

I like your set up a lot! I am curious as to which tips to purchase in order to reduce in-cabin noise? This is my first time diving into the exhaust and installing aftermarket parts.

Was there any drone with the Kunstwerk setup? It’s a shame they no longer sell the racing version of their exhaust just the HPX which I’ve ordered.

Thanks! Check out the Exhaust Tips thread for more info.

The tips I installed are Akrapovic oval tips - 75 x 105 mm outlet, 51 mm inlet, without logos. I got them on AliExpress.

The inlet size will vary depending on which exhaust setup is used. The oval tips go through the OEM bumper without trimming, but you may experience rubbing due to expansion or misalignment.

Man, I installed a borla catback about a week and a half ago and love the sound, however certain rpms, uphill etc theres for sure a crazy (but tolerable to me not the gf) reverb/drone unless i feather the throttle. ended up doing the sound deadening and it helped a little bit.. then ended up getting tips like most suggested and oh boy that was night and day difference. just clean exhaust noise now, no reverb or drone. if i want to be quiet i can be. well worth paying the 100$ for express shipping from ALIEXPRESS.. got my tips in 5 days from hk->hawaii.. . hope people really try the tips before they give up on the borla being too loud.. theres like no cabin noise now... it's almost too quiet unless i open the windows lol it's great!IMG-0755.webp

It’s like reading my own experience. I went through the same sequence. I can confirm that tips on the Borla setup is a game changer.

for sure, love it. it does rub a little bit on the top but there was no way to adjust the muffler itself enough to get it 100% perfect. it is what it is, i dont hear any sound from it touching the diffuser on that one point while driving. it doesnt seem to get hot enough to melt either since its a 2 layer tip. does yours fit perfectly in the cutouts without touching?

I have chrome single wall tips on my mbrp with stock downpipes. I’ve measured temps after driving with a temp gun and they don’t exceed 120 F. I think those that have issues have swapped out down pipes as well.

Good to know! Stock downpipes aswell

Out of curiosity do I need a tune if i swap out the downpipes and the exhaust?

Dumb question, but can the tips be installed after the exhaust is in, or do you put em on the exhaust first??

you just need to drop the mufflers again so you can access the screws for the stock tips which are mounted to the diffuser, after you take out those fake tips you can put the borla back and the new tips just slide onto the pipe and you tighten the clamp. its been flooding here so i took to an exhaust shop and he did it on the lift in like 20 mins.
