Cylinder 1+5+Random misfire detected. RaceChip GTS Black

Well here we are again.

So as some of you know I got my RaceChip GTS Black last week and posted my initial install video and thoughts. I went on a road trip this weekend to go visit some family and I've been testing the chip.

Well, I have now gotten my 3rd check engine light with the chip today and upon plugging in my code reader I was prompted with 3 codes: Cylinder 1 misfire, Cylinder 5 misfire and Random misfire. These aren't all under heavy load and WOT either. I got my second check engine light driving 50kph in a residential area at 2k rpms.

EDIT: RaceChip was in the default setting of 5 and in "Sport" drive mode.

Safe to say my RaceChip is now removed and I don't plan on reinstalling it till this gets figures out. I will contact RaceChip support and see what we can find out.

Anyway, here are the 3 codes, I got all of these today at the same time.

Honestly, I was already skeptical about these piggybacks, magical "plug in and get more power" chips.. I'll probably be waiting for a proper ECU tune. It seems for now, these manufactures are just trying to rush their products to be the first on the market, without doing proper testing.

Anyway, here are the 3 codes, I got all of these today at the same time.

which spark plugs are you running? it sounds like a common issue among all the piggybacks right now. i've never had these problems but i wasn't one of the first people running new piggybacks either. i wouldn't rush too quickly to get a refund if you're using stock plugs.

Yeah I'm using stock plugs. RaceChip has said that's all you need, however I was skeptical. May hold out and see if anyone has tested the plugs Lap3 was recommending.

i'm sure they'll get it worked out. you know how it is. even merc and bmw, as good as they are, release cars with first year glitches. and those are multibillion dollar corporations with hundreds of thousands of employees. racechip has done a pretty good job to have come this far without a misfire reported. but, it was bound to happen eventually. get those better plugs in and i bet you'll be a happy camper.

Sorry to hear that and I’m sure they will rectify the situation.

From what Racechip explained in other threads they did repetitive tests with the 3.3TT using stock plugs on both dyno and Autobahn. What octane gas and which setting(race, sport, eco) have you been using?

Yeah I was just reading up in the RaceChip support subforum. They seem to have done pretty extensive testing.

I am using 91 octane fuel. Today, I had both the car and the chip in "Sport".

do you not have access to 93 octane in your area? that's always important when pushing your engine farther than intended. don't get me wrong, the engine is good for far more then what it's running stock. but when you ask it for more you need to give it more. i'm pretty sure those in california without 93 octane need to keep their tunes pulled a little back from 100% power.

Yeah I wish I had access. In Ontario, 91 octane and below is all that's widely available, there are some gas stations in the busier areas that have 94, but nothing that's close enough to me to be my regular fuel stop.

I have a sneaky suspicion, irregardless of piggyback or ecu, we will have problems pushing boost on factory plugs that are gapped at .37 +.

Hopefully you are in contact with the RC support they are very helpful. Maybe they can help diagnose the problem as it relates to the chip. I have not run into any problems as of yet. But I have had little chance to really test my chip, with it raining pretty much every day the last two weeks. I may have 200 miles with the chip and I run 93 octane exclusively.

Yep, I'm thinking regardless of tune we'll need to regap our plugs to under .30.

I don't know how any chip maker can say they did extensive testing with zero issues and then we see so many people report problems, unless they mean they extensively tested one car with one octane and regapped stock plugs.

first, it's not a big deal to regap spark plugs. if that's what we must do, we just do it. but I think they'll get any issues fixed so that we don't need to.

second, you're making it sound like "so many" racechip users are reporting problems. so I'm here to clarify that only one customer has had the issue so far for anyone who might have missed that fact.

First, I didn't say it was a big deal. I said regardless of tune we will probably need to regap our plugs.

Second, I said "any chip maker" not "Race Chip, exclusively" since, you know...EVERY chip maker's tunes so far have had the same exact issues...

They are very responsive and should get you sorted out. Just remember they are off till Tuesday with the holiday.

I think right now it's important for us to help the chip maker's out with as much info as possible. That way they can provide better recommendations to customers about what's needed to run a tune OR (better yet) alter their tune to work with completely stock vehicles.

Race Chip so far have given no indication that they wouldn't stand by their products. I'm interested in what their response will be.

I have no idea, I can't find any mention of octane requirements anywhere on their website or in the included documentation.

Mine comes with "Efficiency", "Sport" and "Race"
