Cylinder 1+5+Random misfire detected. RaceChip GTS Black

From what I'm reading, this may be an issue of not having followed the installation instructions. I'm waiting to hear what happens.

I followed the instructions perfectly. I just didn't go in and fine tune the chip yet. The instructions even say to start with the default setting (5) as that's what's best suited for the Stinger.

So that's what I did, and this is what happened.

Posted yesterday:

I mean I wouldn't say it could have been avoided. The Chip is advertised as plug and play and the instructions say "the chip has been tuned to your vehicle so no changes should be needed".

I installed the chip as per the instructions and I'm sharing my results. As far as I'm concerned this is still a problem and valuable info, for both users and RaceChip. If to get the chip "working" in my vehicle I need to drastically lower the performance to nearly stock, I would say the chip isn't worth it.

Seriously, I know everyone is all horny for RaceChip right now, believe me, I'm excited for a tuning solution too, but I don't understand how people can try and put all this blame on me.

I installed the chip as per manufacture instructions and left the default settings as suggested in the manual and this is what happened. If it happened to me, it could happen to you. God forbid I share this information.

Well, it sounded to me like the whole "fine tune for your car" was kind of important. If not, fine. I'm not trying to bash anyone or anyone's product. I'm just trying to interpret what's being said. I do hope you get it all figured out and soon.

See, I don't disagree, the fine tuning is definitely important and so I will test it and try out the cars performance then report back.

The fact still stands that the manual says start in "5", which I did and this happened.

If all you want to take from this thread is "hey, little heads up when you get your RaceChip, it can cause problems on default settings, so test it out and lower it if you have too" then I'd say my information was valuable.

It isn’t your fault. Don’t let a few people make you upset. You paid for a product designed to work and for whatever reason it isn’t. I for one am very glad you’re posting about this so people know this is a possible problem. This was a big problem with the Lap3 when it came out for the Optimas except I think people were blowing cylinders until they realized they needed different spark plugs. Perhaps that’s the fix here.

You early adopters are literally the guinea pigs for the Stinger. I appreciate the feedback!
If RaceChip cant bother to provide proper instructions, then I wont bother to throw 800 bucks to them.

I agree this is good information to know. However to be fair to Racechip they did anticipate this in there troubleshoot section. I'm sure it's is generic to all the other cars they tune but it is there. I'm certain Racechip will get you sorted after the holiday if your chip continues to cause you problems.

Anyone installing any tuning package is doing Research and Development for the respective company. That’s the truth and every company knows it. You are running a beta version at full price.

This is evident by every tune failing in a similar manner.

The OP is right. It is not his fault. Plug and play with default settings should be no problem—if he wasn’t testing the chip for RC.

Let's hope the issue can be remedied with only a few minor adjustments. It seems that's a good possibility - so let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best for the short term...

Well here we are again.

So as some of you know I got my RaceChip GTS Black last week and posted my initial install video and thoughts. I went on a road trip this weekend to go visit some family and I've been testing the chip.

Well, I have now gotten my 3rd check engine light with the chip today and upon plugging in my code reader I was prompted with 3 codes: Cylinder 1 misfire, Cylinder 5 misfire and Random misfire. These aren't all under heavy load and WOT either. I got my second check engine light driving 50kph in a residential area at 2k rpms.

EDIT: RaceChip was in the default setting of 5 and in "Sport" drive mode.

Safe to say my RaceChip is now removed and I don't plan on reinstalling it till this gets figures out. I will contact RaceChip support and see what we can find out.

Anyway, here are the 3 codes, I got all of these today at the same time.

I am sorry that you are facing issues and I am sorry that you did not receive support immediately. In Germany, we had public (easter) holidays for the last 4 days.

So what are the next steps:
1) You will get a dedicated and experienced contact person, who is a member of our technical customer support. He or she will answer your request as soon as possible and will be able to provide better support than I can do.
2) Furthermore, I will answer the open questions in this thread. Please give me some time for that

In general: Please reduce the settings immediately, if you feel any stuttering, see a check engine light or have any other issues. The higher modes such as "Race" are only made for high quality fuel (93 to 98 octane). It is also possible turn the tuning off via your smartphone app until all issues are solved.
Issues can be caused by different reasons. E.g. in your case it could be that you already have more power than 365 hp in stock condition (due to standard factory model variation) and with the additional power it is just too much for the 91 octane fuel used. You will figure this out with my colleague.
We might reduce the default power output afterwards.

Hey guys, so just for clarification, RaceChip has confirmed that there is ONLY 3 total modes (4 if you include "deactivated") for the GTS Black WITH Bluetooth. The 3 are: Efficiancy, Sport and Race.

For those that were saying to turn ignition "ON" and engine "OFF" to fine tune it from 0 - 7.. this is not possible and should not be confused with the 7 modes the chip comes with if you opt for a non-bluetooth model. The instructions are very unclear and RaceChip has received the feedback on this. I only have access to the 3 modes and no further adjustments.

RaceChip customer support got a hold of me today and informed me they sent a software update to my chip which I can download and install through the phone app and asked that I test it.

Will update later with further results.

Hey RaceChip thanks for the reply and the info.

No worries about the delay, I was also enjoying Easter celebrations this weekend. Customer support responded to me immediately this morning with quite a detailed reply.

Yes. There has been quite some confusion. Thus, I explained the mappings in following post:
What are the different mappings?

Furthermore, the fine tuning differs depending on whether you have the app or not. Usually, everybody gets all the information he needs in his installation manual, because it is customized depending on your order (I am sorry, that the Kia Stinger specific part was replaced by a generic instruction in many instructions we sent out). Please find some information about the fine-tuning in following thread:

I'm willing to give RaceChip a shot, I think so far they've had excellent service and they've been really quite active on the forums.

I'll get in touch with their official customer support and provide them any details they might need (error codes, driving conditions, etc..) and see what we can find out.

Any updates on your situation? I've got people (both on and off of forums) telling me that I should replace or regap my plugs. I'd really like to know how your particular issue is being handled by RaceChip and whether or not you feel it has been resolved.

I've been following pretty closely. RaceChip sent him a software update. He's put the chip up for sale for $900 Canadian.

Took my car to the dealer and they confirmed spark plug issue and replaced it. Haven't personally reisntalled the chip since. Drove the car a few days after repairs and seems to be rolling good now. Last I heard from RaceChip support they had said they sent me a software update for my chip that I can install through the app. I haven't done it yet and I personally think I will just either return the chip or sell it. I have it listed in the member classifieds in anyone is interested.

I am truly sorry that you were facing issues with your Stinger. Based on your issue and some insights from South Korea, we will change our recommendation to following:

Kia Stinger stock spark plugs are designed for good fuel quality. If used with bad or medium fuel quality (91 or lower), in rare cases the spark plugs might get damaged no matter whether the car is tuned or not. For optimum performance and security of the spark plugs, it is beneficial to re-gap the spark plugs to 0.024-0.028 (from stock 0.034-0.036). Beyond that, suitable performance aftermarket spark plugs with a gap of 0.024-0.028 will improve performance and security.

Furthermore, we will slightly decrease the performance of the default setting. Just as a precaution for those people using 91 octane and are not re-gapping their spark plugs.
Don't get me wrong, we sold a huge number of products without having any issues. However, we want to be always safe, and not just 98% safe.
