Stinger 2.0 Theta II Fuel Pump Recall

fascinating. I'll be waiting for the recall letter in november.

I've already replaced my high pressure fuel pump twice. Once at 55k and again just recently at 148k. Do you think I have a chance of getting reimbursed if I can show invoices stating this exact issue? Over 3000 dollars in total costs.

I hope so. I just made a new case asking for a reimbursement of 3600 dollars.


I'll update when they reply.

Update 1: I called them the next day after submitting a claim via the link above. They said to give them another call when November 7th comes around since the recall campaign doesn't start until then. They also looked at my attachments from my claim and the rep said that a reimbursement is entirely possible, but they weren't the person that gets to decide that. They said that they will escalate my case when November comes around.

Hmm, I wonder if this applies to Stingers produced for the EU market.
Why would the European market be different? The issue is a manufacturing defect, arising from the misalignment of the fuel control valve plunger in the high pressure fuel pump. There's no apparent "Euro spec" for that.

The 2.0L Theta II engine is only manufactured in two places: Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Montgomery, Alabama, or Kia Motors Slovakia in Zilina. Now, Stingers for the European market most likely came from their plant in Kaliningrad, Russia, out of the 3 locations world-wide that assemble Kia Stingers (Korea and Kazahkstan being the other 2). It would make sense for the Kaliningrad plant to source their 2.0L from Zilina.

Because of this, it is entirely possible for the Zilina plant to source some of their parts from suppliers closer by. Automotive OEM suppliers quite often also have mfg locations all over the world. Since this defect appears to be an alignment issue with the fuel control valve plunger, the culprit could be related to mfg QA/QC issues, instead of engineering design problem. So... if the OEM builds the same fuel pump at a different plant in Europe, they may be subjected to enough difference(s) in QA/QC processes for the control valve alignment to manifest differently.

Long story short... there are perfectly good reasons Euro market Stinger might not be affected by this recall.

@Volfy The vehicle sticker for my 2.5T indicates korea as country of origin for the engine/trans. Is this to suggest engine was built somewhere in europe then shipped to korea?

My EU Stinger is made in Korea, as are all others for the EU market. We don't import cars from Russia because EU Spec is similar to NZ and AUS specs rather than Russia (global).
But I don't know where the engine comes from.
 
I called Kia on the 6th, before the service campaign starts (November 7th/10th), and they said my 2018 KIA 2.0 PREMIUM was not an affected VIN number. They advise me to keep checking the safety recall tool to see if my VIN gets added to the list for this recall. Can anyone else check to see if their car is showing this recall? It is a chance they have not added the affected cars yet.

Update: My Stinger's VIN did end up giving the attached information in regards to the fuel pump recall. I called KIA and they said that they can only process the reimbursement claim if KIA has defined the remedy for said recall. At the moment, there is no remedy and I will have to wait until the recall repair has been completed to my vehicle before a reimbursement can be filed. The representative said to call back in a couple weeks to check on the status of the recall remedy. They also said that there is a good chance I will get reimbursed for my repairs.

This is for anyone that has experienced problems with their fuel pumps. I currently have a ‘18 premium with 90k miles. Intermittently I will lose acceleration with more aggressive driving patterns (quick acceleration at stop lights, accelerating fast from a coasting speed on highway). It does not do it all the time but is becoming more frequent. I did throw a 0088000 ECS code as well at 1 point but has since resolved itself. Took to Kia today, say it may be related to the current recall of the fuel pumps and to wait out the remedy (insert pissed off face). That being said, I’m wondering from the others who have experienced the fuel pump issue if mine is the same experience or if it’s something different then what I’m experiencing. Any thoughts?

Mine was acted the same way at times. I ended up having to replace a maf sensor. Seemed to fix the issues until recently. Car just kinda went nope on the highway 2 weeks ago. I had already been in touch with my dealer as soon as there was a whisper about the recall coming. Havent had to do my punp yet but my service writer knows im in line when the fix is in.
