Door Frame Ticking / Squeaking Elimination

Not sure. When my roof is open, I can bang my fist on it from the top and no rattles or noises. When it is closed fully, there is some metallic rattling from the front (on occasion or not at all depending on the position of the metal bar). The obvious culprit would be the spring-mounted pop-up wind screen that folds and gets squished in there when the roof is closed. Is it not touching other metal, particularly when the car is jolted over a bump? I know of no way of testing that theory without removing the pop-up screen. Is there any soft material that can be put on it that won't jam or cause a problem? But a spring-mounted item like that is bound to be a problem unless the only thing it touches when compressed is soft/rubber.

The spring loaded pop up screen does touch a hard material, and it could make noises over bumps. If you have slender enough fingers, this can be replicated by putting the sunroof into the tilt position, putting your fingers in the open area in the front on the far left or far right and pushing down on the screen's top and releasing. It will bang against the (metal?) part of the sunroof that presses down on the screen. I've tried pressing down with force on the screen with the sunroof tilted and I still get noise, so it may not be this, for me at least.

We're getting a bit in depth about the sunroof in the door ticking thread, we might be best to keep the sunroof talk in the sunroof thread to keep these topics more relevant to their particular issues?

Found my door squeaks to be coming from the top of the doors, where the textured rubber weather strip contacts the underside of the roof line(where my finger is pulling). You can replicate the squeaking and creaking by pressing the top of the door frames against the car gently.
So I tried adding a strip of anti-friction tape along the underside of the roofline, from A to C pillar, and since then have been enjoying the silence!
Previously I had tried to tape over the door mouldings, gaskets as well as silicone lube. Also added felt tape on the inside of the plastic channeling around the window, nothing worked cos for me the squeaking was coming from the outside of the door frame!
Hope this works for those who haven’t had any success thus far.

Terrific! For anyone with a white or black car ;)

Can you provide the exact material that you used?

Excellent idea. I've know that particular seal to be noisy and I was also able to replicate squeaking by pressing the doors inward while closed. I have been using lubricants to keep it quiet, but that doesn't last long, but it works when freshly applied. This solution looks more permanent and also barely visible.

FYI, this can be found on Amazon under a search of "UHMW Tape." I think it's the same thing. It's a low friction and anti-squeak/rattle tape, per 3M's website.

Cool, so it's translucent! I was (stupidly) thinking it would be white or black.

Let's try it!!!

Honestly, wish I had known before buying the Shin-Etsu...doesn't really work for this issue.

I used some tape like this on my Cobalt SS. The door was too tightly fitted against the dash when the door was closed (probably minor alignment issue) and would make popping noises over bumps when the door and dash touched. Adding this tape to the contact surface of the dash fixed this particular issue. I probably used half a roll on that car but that was a losing battle. Fun to drive, but terrible quality. You can't fix a turd with tape I guess, lol.

MY 19 model. The fixes didn't work for me for ticking passenger side. Finally i noticed that if I pushed up on the roof just under the sunroof the ticking wouold immediately stop.
Also, when parked out in full sun for a while, I get the popping noise as well.
Took into dealer who were excellent and said there is a service bulleting to address problem with sunroof, so it's in for a couple of days.
Interesting though, in time between initial check and 2 day fix the ticking went away! I aksed the service guys what they did and all that they did was take the passenger roof handle off and put it back on again. Maybe that's something others might try for their ticking.
Hoping the heat related knocking can be fixed.

What a coincidence. I happened to be dealing with a ticking noise that goes away when i press up on the roof grab handle. A few hours ago, I started experimenting with removing the grab handle entirely, loosening the screws, and tightening the screws. The noise persists after removing entirely, and loosening the screws. So now I'm desperately hoping tightening helps. It's driving me mad.

Glad you announced your presence with your first post. Here's hoping that your sunroof fix is effective (whatever IT is). Unless the exact same thing is making the noise, your fix won't work for somebody else. (Oh, see the very next post by @stingerbeagle :P)

I've been reading everything about noises since coming to the forum, and probably the funniest one was a complaint about knocking on the passenger side; which, it was soon discovered, was only the seatbelt buckle tapping the B pillar. What a relief! Easy peasy "fix", that. ;)

The ticking noise might still be there in mine, but I’ve discovered the excellent Harmon Kardon sound system so I don’t notice it anymore...;):)

But what do you do in between tracks?!!!!

Got my motor back from the dealer yesterday. 16 hours labour apparently to do what they had to do. Ticking fixed, popping when hot fixed, but the entire roof was creaking!!! Noticed is didn't creak when roof open, so applied shinetsu around the edge of the sunroof and bingo, no noises at all. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

What, exactly, did they do?

Hi, unfortunatley I don't know the details, just some general comments. They followed a Kia bulletin on the issue. All I really know is that they had to drop the roofliner and replace a bunch of seals. I can also see a lot of new Shinetsu type grease in the sunroof rails. As time was a bit of pressure what with it being the end of the week before Xmas, I didn't get any paperwork back. I'll go back soon as they still have to refit one roof clip that was out of stock. Might be able to get more info to share then.

Please do ask as the rest of us sufferers would like to know :)

Yes Barry please disclose if possible as this has been an on going issue since day dot on here. Also Kia Aust seem in the past to be the first world wide with their TSB. Eg: paint, hatch rattle etc.

A couple of days ago Stinger was lelt in outside temperature of 42°c for about an hour. When i exited car park over numerous speed bumps at very low speed it seemed nearly everything creaked, particularly the roof.

I think that was more of a protest call for being left outside.:D I noticed the same thing on Saturday whilst out. I left her in full sun for 2 hours:sick:
