Winter Rim Setups

A meaty look like that with summer rubber would be awesome. May have to go 18", though, in order to fit and not rub while driving. I get the "Mafia Staff Car" thing. But from where I'm sitting, she looks pretty sweet!

The Gestapo is in town !! Seriously I think it looks mean and clean , glad you're "safely" on the road again ! Enjoy !!!
maybe a set of mudguards too ?

I like those wheels!

Yes, nice. They have the OEM wheel look to them.

I went with the recommended TireRack package - Michelin Ice-X on SE A8-2 wheels. Not a top-end wheel, but fine for schlepping around in winter. I went with black for to different "winter look". I like the look OK... on the red car, they set the Brembo's off nicely:winprofsmall.webp

I already posted this in the Snowshoes thread, but I'll put it here too.

I'm running 225/45-R18 Nokian Hakkapiletta R3s on Klasse Motorsport APEX rims, all from our local Kal Tire. Ordered my set of OEM TPMS for $149 CDN including expedited shipping from Korea versus $150 each from the local Kia dealer.

I've had them on for about 3 weeks now, the last 2 weeks of which we've had snow on the road. The first snowfall came down over frozen rain, so the roads were very slippery, but the Hakkapilettas handled it great. I honestly think Nokians are the best winter tires available.

Here's what they look like:

I really like those rims. A lot better than my winter rims. You should see if the center cap diameter is compatible with the “GT” stick on center cap covers that Sal has on his site. Btw are those hakkas studdable?

Nope, the R3s aren't studdable. You have to go to the R8 if you want studs. We ran studded R8s on my wife's minivan last year and, frankly, I wasn't a huge fan. They're unbeatable for those really, really icy days, but for 90%+ of the time the highways and major thoroughfares around here are dry and I think the studded tires provide poorer grip in those circumstances. Also, you can get a fair bit of wheelspin when accelerating from a full stop.

If you're regularly driving on ice covered roads or really hard-packed snow, though, the studded R8s would be great.

Finally able to post my winter setup - Conti WinterContact Si 245x40x18 - Rims FC04 18x9. Now just waiting on the snow

^^^^ Looks really sharp.

I'm curious why you guys aren't using your stock wheels for your winter setup. I'm running the stock wheels with pirelli sotozero 3s.

The stock rim has a machined face, and will be prone to corrosion due to all the salt on the road, especially if you don’t keep them clean. The winter rim I’m using is “winter” rated...basically it’s a painted rim...primer, paint, clear coat. I’m avoiding having my stock 19s deal with all the crap on the road during the winter months.

Yeah they have a machined face, but I'll spritz them with quick wax every week or so. Vancouver doesn't actually use that much salt.

For me, it comes down to cost.

Over the long run (3 years or more), it will be less expensive to buy a second set of rims for your winter tires. The cost of mounting tires on rims twice a year will be more expensive than the second set of rims with tires already mounted and simply having them swapped for the summer set. And the winter conditions are certainly harder on your rims than summer, so you'll hopefully have 2 sets of rims looking good for a longer period of time than you will with just the stock rims.

I have the winter wheels from my previous car lying around and it turns out they will work on the Stinger.

Blizzak WS80 245/40/18 on the OEM Evo X GSR Enkei wheels. I think they look alright on the Stinger. Just need to find some replacement center caps.

Same here. I went with a steel/painted rim for winters (have a pic of my setup up there at #46). I worry about the corrosive effects of salt on those nice OEM rims over many winters. Plus, there's a much higher chance of 'curb rash' in the winter. You get that wet, greasy snow over ice, and it's easy to slide sideways into a curb, even at slow speeds. Plus I like the advantage and convenience of swapping them myself whenever I want to.
