Wider Tire sizes

Good Morning I have had my Stinger for 6 months now with 30000 km. Just replace the worn out michelin's with 255 35 19 General's all 4 corners on stock rims. Looks a lot better and no clearance issues with the front struts.
So you put 255’s on 8” front tires? If so did the installer mention any safety concerns with 30mm oversized tires on stock rims?
Do not put 275mm wide tires on a 8.5" wheel. the max recommended tire width for 8.5 is 255mm. A 275mm tire is NOT SAFE on a 8.5" wheel.
I know 255s are recommended for 8.5”, but tons of people put oversized tires(including +30mm above) on stock rims without issues. So how much extra is still considered safe? 10mm? 20mm? 30mm?

Also, my example is only related to rear tires so they won’t be tasked with the lateral handling, just straight line launch traction.;)

Just because "tons of people" are doing it does not mean it's a safe practice. Just like tons of people don't use jack stands to keep their car raised does not make it acceptable. In the end it's your decision; But I'm telling you putting that wide a tire on a 8.5" is not recommended (front or rear). You may get away with it or you may get a blowout in the future due to excessive stress and heat buildup in the sidewall. BAD IDEA man. To anyone doing this, you're risking a blow up.

The tire manufacturers are the ones who specify the acceptable rim width range for their tires. You can't assume a particular size tire will be "safe" - although, obviously, for a certain size rim, the typical width ranges will be similar. There will be some differences between manufacturers and tire models at either extreme.

Lateral loads apply to rear tires as well as fronts, although perhaps not to the same degree, depending on your driving style. Ideally, they would be equal.

New Stinger owner here - with the 255s all the way around did you have to change the front rims?

So, welcome to the forum!

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that some owners are trying to "get away" with variation on the OEM tire to rim match up. You can put rear tires (255/3519) on the front. But as warned by @celwin the narrower front rims will result in more sidewall flex. Screw around with what Kia designed for at your own risk.

Thanks! Read the rest of the thread. That is a big risk imho. I'll be sticking with what Kia has set up. Switching to Pilot Sport A/S 3+s for cooler weather in my part of the country. Safe motoring!

For me wider tires would wreck playful balanced nature of the car. Kia engineers did very good job striking balance between grip and ability to let car move a bit. It’s funny longer I had the Stinger the less I wanted to mod it.
It wouldn’t wreck anything.

People at discount tire have told me it won’t be an issue

This guy on youtube put 275/35/19 on his stock wheels. Hopefully this helps some of you with your decision.

He's got the mentality to enjoy doing that to a perfectly decent GT: now you can't hear a dang thing but Vroom! Might as well not even have a stereo. Hah. :P
