Hey guys fellow
G70 3.3t RWD here
Am gonna sum it up for you so you don’t have to look for answers reading the whole thread:
I had the same issue on my
G70 .. very very harsh 3-2 downshifts , it got so bad that I stopped using the car
The issue is not a drive mode thing, it happens in all drive modes, and it happens when the transmission is cold or warm no real difference, the issue will only get worse over time, the issue is a software problem.
What
@Snowwhite mentioned is not a real hidden reset/relearn process and doing it the way he did will change nothing.
what he described are the steps for the TCM relearn process (garage shifting) it is mentioned in the service manual but to initiate the learning process you have to use KDS or G-scan
scan tool to let the TCM know what to learn and when to register inputs
The TCM learning process is not needed in our case but I’ll explain it for your information (needed when new mechanical parts are replaced)
The learning process has two steps, the first step is teach the TCM how to upshift and downshift on all gears while slowly accelerating/decelerating and this has to be monitored through a
scan tool and you have to follow the instructions on the
scan tool while doing that and press ok after each performed run (5 runs in total .. accelerate through all gears then decelerate through all gears)
After that you have to do the second step (garage shift learning). In this step you have to go through D for several seconds then N for several seconds the R then N then D and so on.
But as mentioned this is not needed in this case and it will not work without a
scan tool as the TCM will register nothing of what you’re trying to teach it.
having it working for
@Snowwhite is just a placebo IMO ... and also all he’ve done is the garage shift learning steps not the drive shifting anyway.
I got the issue completely fixed (for now at least)
The fix is to reset the A/T adaptive values (the only thing in the TCM that can be reset anyway)
I brought the car to the dealer multiple times telling them to try and reset the adaptive values for the TCM and they claim that they’ve done that .. but I saw no change in the downshifts (most probably they didn’t reset anything)
to reset the TCM adaptive values for this car you need one of two scan tools (either the official GDS/KDS or G scan) any other scan tools will show “faliure” while performing a reset
Although the other scan tools (like Launch) can reset the TCM for the
G80, but not the
G70 for some reason.
It’s very easy and anyone with a
scan tool can do it himself
Just search for a “G scan”
scan tool nearby at any mechanic shop
-Connect the
scan tool to the OBDll port
-choose Kia Stinger from the menu or let it auto detect through
VIN reading
-choose TCM/TCU/Transmission module
-press on reset adaptive values
done
The car will shift normal after that and will be very smooth
(there’s no adaptive learning for this platform in the G-scan
scan tool as you may see on different scan tools like “launch”) somebody mentioned this before on this thread .. it’s not possible on this transmission, they can just reset the adaptives.
the question here is:
what to do/not to do while the TCM is now automatically adapting and learning after the reset? ( I just drove normal and smooth for the first 200 km without and hard accelerations)
What is causing the TCM to learn this bad downshifting?
Why isn’t the TCM automatically adapting again if it has learned this bad downshifting over time?
Genesis needs to release an update for this TCM to make it not learn this bad downshifting or make it’s adaptation better or make it automatically relearn every couple thousand miles.
this issue turned out to be more common than you might think (kia/hyundai/genesis)
and it might come back again after a while as it might learn this harsh downshifting again for some reason
I have complained to Genesis about it and sent them 10
VIN numbers of affected cars and told them how to fix the issue (reset) .. now they’ve called those 10 car owners and scheduled appointments for them and they have pulled data out of their TCU to try and figure out what’s happening with TCU and possibly release an update to fix that. After that they have reset those TSU to solve the problem.
it’s important to let KIA pull data out of you TCU before resetting so they can figure a permanent fix for this. But for that they need a special device which they will send to the dealer to pull the data from the TCU .. so someone should contact KIA corporate before visiting the dealer to make it quick.
it’s also important to reset the adaptive values of the transmission control module after changing the transmission fluid (when the time comes for that)
happy resetting
Enjoy your cars again
