Sunset Yellow Discussion

Lol. I wasn't prodding you, you know. If it were me, and I changed cars, and I loved my Sunset Yellow still (the memory of what might have been, "if only"), I'd like pictures to remind me.

Well guys I got mine repainted by the dealership and although they did a decent job with the paint job it doesn’t match well enough for me and they are a few visible paint lines in the jambs so I’m going to get the buyback and potentially purchase a 2019 ceramic gray with red interior. I’m super pissed off and was avoiding the forum to stay positive for the last 6 weeks it took to paint my car. Seems like most are choosing the buyback.

I did learn some valuable info that I would like to share. Kia sold 271 yellow stingers and pulled the remaining 129 from the dealerships before they were sold. They are going to try to sell all the returns in local car dealer auctions. I told them I’m interested in making an offer to buy my back after they pay me back in full. They are not sure that is possible yet but I will find out soon. I’m just not paying full price for a less than perfect paint job and 5k is not enough of a concession to consider keeping mine.

I also learned they have given some of the previous Kia owners a free upgrade without having to pay a difference but that was an off the record discussion. I was not offered this personally but may consider it if I can get free upgrade. I’m waiting for my offer from Kia national team as my paperwork is going thru the formal process.

Well, after a long and thorough deliberation, I am keeping mine. I was not happy with the process or repaint results, but I'd only get back around $1400 to turn the car in due to a negative trade in, plus I am leasing the car, so it made sense to keep it, collect the $5K, then turn it in after the lease is up. I do love the car for what it is, wish the paint was better, but boy, this car is so rare and in this color extremely rare, so I'll live with the paint for now. I did bring it back to show the body shop (RK Collision) the issues with paint lines, imperfection spots in the paint (dust in clear coat), and a little dull and much orange peel. They were very receptive to looking at the issues and plan to take my car back in for a week or so to do a full wet sand and polishing. The quaility control guy said that should clear up most of the issues, reduce the orange peel look, and also brighten up the shine. Hoping it comes out well.

I am in the middle of doing the replacement car as the my repaint failed to meet my standards. At no time have they offered me a free upgrade. In fact, they mention that if I wanted upgrade the car to a GT1 or GT2 I could, but I would pay the difference. They want the car to be exactly the same MSRP or as close as possible. My issue is that there are NO base GT AWDs near me, so they had to go all the way to South Dakota to find me a suitable replacement. So they are working on a dealer trade and then shipping the car to Michigan, hopefully. I haven't heard anything in 2 weeks though. I plan on calling my rep Friday as I sent her a long email today.

I sent in the buyback paperwork on Monday, so now it’s time to wait and search for a replacement. They said it’d take between 30-60 days to process.

Mine was a straight buyback and it took pretty much all of the 60 days. Gave me plenty of time to shop around.

G70 is on my short list, but still no word on when Texas dealers will have them.

Wow, i did not realise that the US did not get Sunset Yellow till now, do not know how Kia make these decisions on which country gets what ?
I read that Australia won't get the Orange stinger, the one displayed as the GT Federation Stinger at the American car show.

Neither will anyone else. That is a concept car color only. Kia wants (or wanted) to know what "we" think of it. And I walked into my dealer and said, "Bring it to me". And they said, "You can't have it." And I said, "Why not? I'll pay extra." And they said, "Can't be done. It isn't available for love nor money." Crap! Finally, the sales manager got involved and said, "Hey, if you lease the car, you can repaint it any color your like." Competition Orange is still my favorite what-if color.

I was going back and forth with the prospect of trading it in or doing a buyback and working toward a better deal as we near the end of the year, but it doesn’t seem worth the trouble. I got a great deal to begin with, and I am very pleased with my car to date. It performed w much better than anyone expected at its first track trip, and I can’t see not keeping it when the day is done. Now, we need to get on finding out how many Sunset Yellows will be left “in the wild” and look into getting some details on build numbers.
I'd be interested in finding out my build # out of let's call it for now the unfortunate 400 I know my born on date and serial#

If we get all the build dates on the list that we are making, we can know our “exact” number.

Well this will be my 2nd to last post on this topic.
I'm about 1 month into a non-repaint buyback and needed to make a move.

Picked up a 2019 Ceramic Silver GT2 AWD on Saturday.
Now I have to park 2 Stingers and pay the insurance on both.

Will update upon a successful turn-in.

I'm curious if there is any relationship between the VIN and the # out of 400. Maybe the last 6 or so digits are the sequence?

Mine is 6020338.

I'm at 1 month since turning in my signed buyback offer. They advised me 45-60 days so planning to hear something in next few weeks. Ive been updating my online case with payments but have heard nothing else since returning the signed offer.

Very interested to see what happens after the fact. Id be up to bid on it "as is" during an auction. As @Expert4 stated, the $5k wasnt good enough for me to keep the car. I made an initial offer of 15K after the repaint to which they took one week to deny. Bidding in auction after they paint it could be fun.

For now i wait. I am not sold on a 2019 yet as i truly love the yellow and the attention and discussions it garners. Just yesterday i picked up a screw in my tire and the guy at the local tire store asked "did you put Kia wheel caps on your Tesla?" After that he wanted to see everything on the car and could not stop complementing it!!

Agree with you on the attention it gers. I took mine to the car wash last week, was in the waiting room and didn't realize they were finished drying it off when the worker opened the door and said, "Maserati?.......Maserati?......."
I said, "What color?"
He said, "Yellow"
I said, "Kia....."
He Said, "Wow, nice car!"

As previously mentioned, I took the $5K since I am leasing and buyback would have only given me $1400. Car goes back to the paint shop (RK Collision) on Jan 8th for the week for a wet sand and re-polish to address the issues I have. I don't think it will resolve the issues (I think only an entire repaint would fix that), but hopefully it will look better and the orange peel will be much less. Still love the car for what it is, wish Kia didn't cheap out with the repaint process. I wonder if they'll drop or renegotiate the buyout at the end of the lease since the value should be lower since the car was repainted? If so, maybe I'll buy it at a low price and have it repainted by a professional!

How exactly did you make an offer to buy the car back? You mentioned it took one week to get an official denial?
