Sunset Yellow Discussion

Took mine out of the garage to get a closer look in the sun and thorough inspection. Worse than I thought. Still can't tell the color difference in the pix, just seems like the new paint has a greenish tint compared to the deeper yellow tone of the plastic that wasn't painted. Also noticed several areas that have paint dimples. They also chipped paint when putting bumpers back on. Zoom in on the pix and you can see the terrible paint lines on the door frame and an example of the paint dimples. I have a bunch of pix but these will give you an example of the repaint disaster. You can also see with your eyes (hard to see in pix) that the car was repainted - that orange peel look and sand marks under the paint.

I hate that for you, I've seen other people that have had your same experience. My experience was complete different, although the body shop used a grey/white primer on my paint. My paint was brighter and glossier that the original, in comparison the original paint looked faded.

My paint is not perfect, there are weird smudges under or in the clear coat all over my vehicle, it's hard to see unless you are under the right lighting conditions. You may want to look for those as well.

I can see a difference for sure. My dealer told me that some body shops are using a cheap gray primer to repaint the yellow stingers instead of the expensive stuff Kia uses. Perhaps that’s the issue?
My paint shop claimed the yellow primer directed by Kia was poor quality and they used a white higher quality primer they preferred. They wouldn’t guarantee the paint for life if they used the yellow Kia directed primer.

And there you go. That’s why it looks different. Different primer.

So my case manager told me I can use my $5K check to get my unacceptable paint job fixed or have the car repainted on my own including plastic parts. How's that for customer service? Terrible paint job and it's on me to pay to fix the mess? Are you kidding? Waiting on buyback numbers. If anywhere near $5K I'm getting rid of it.

Well my case just got worse. Kia doesn't include rebates in the buyback so the rebates that covered my negative equity trade don't count, so turning it in is not an option unless I want to lose $2500! Looks like I'm stuck with a $40K car with an crap paint job. I now know what KMA stands for and it ain't Kia Motors America! (Kiss My A$$!)

2.5 years and counting until turn in......

I would still think you would come out ahead. I would wait until you get the official buyback paperwork.

My rep said that they could not supply that information and it had to be done by another group. I received a PDF document, was yours an official document or just a verbal statement?

I found one little bubble on my rear driver side door. I haven't brought it up to my dealer yet, but I know they would have no qualms fixing it. Also have a lifetime warranty on the new paint as long as I own the car. Can you push the deal to push whoever painted your car to make it right? My was done by the in house shop, turned out pretty decent, not a perfect match but they did a good job. They also painted the door rockers(?) because they didn't want there to be a tape line.
The varying degree of quality and ability to go beyond what Kia said they would paint is amazing on a case-by-case basis.

Agreed, wait on the official offer. I was told LOTS of things that were different than the actual offer made in writing.

Based on what i remember, the rebate is basically cash back that you "chose" to use on the purchase of the vehicle. There should have been a paper that you signed that stated the dealer to apply the rebate to the purchase. That said, i dont see how they could now not count it against negative equity. That seems fishy to me. I did NOT have any negative equity so cant say for certain however. All of my official paperwork started with what was owed and went from there...

I too am completely disappointed in the varying quality of this resolution. I have submitted my buyback paperwork and am waiting on a surrender day at the moment.

I had negative equity in my case, and the paper they sent me took it out of the repurchase. It was around 5k, and the negative equity dropped the reimbursement to about $2800 to make of for it. So they will definitely take your negative equity out of the value of the repurchase amount.

It would make sense for the buyback to not include the rebates in the event that they were applied to money still owed in the loan rollover. It is unfortunate, however, because it makes it more difficult to make a clean break with the buyback option. I’m sorry dude.

I kept mine. That was somewhat of a deciding factor, but I REALLY wanted yellow, and wanted to do some upgrades, so the $5k was worth it.

I was going back and forth with the prospect of trading it in or doing a buyback and working toward a better deal as we near the end of the year, but it doesn’t seem worth the trouble. I got a great deal to begin with, and I am very pleased with my car to date. It performed w much better than anyone expected at its first track trip, and I can’t see not keeping it when the day is done. Now, we need to get on finding out how many Sunset Yellows will be left “in the wild” and look into getting some details on build numbers.

I was happy with mine, but.....20181105_082245.webp 20181105_082230.webpIt was deemed a total loss

Well that sucks. These things get rarer by the day. No mechanical failures that caused it I assume?

None at all. I tried to avoid a deer, caught some gravel and ended up in a ditch/trench.

RIP, what was the VIN and date of death. Or you can update this list that I put together a while ago:

2018 Stinger Limited VIN List
I think it is about time we Sunset Yellows all work on this list together--perhaps adding a column regarding if we got it repainted and kept it. It would also be fantastic if we added the inside-door build date.

EDIT: I see that those columns are already there. Please, everyone fill out the sheet. Include all the info you can. I also hyperlinked my handle to my profile page as to make it easier to find me.
