Sunset Yellow Discussion

While getting my oil change, I noticed the dealership had a yellow one sitting out back. Service guy told me was a Corporate buy back, waiting for transport. Learned that owners were given 3 options.
1. 10k cash back
2. Bring back to any dealership and pick any color from new stock.
3. Allow them to repaint...but unfortunate part was fine print stated repaint of all metal components...not front / rear fiberglass fascia, etc...

Is this accurate?

Dealer is mistaken on the cash back. It's only $5k that you get after the car is repainted and you accept the repaint. You also have the replace and buyback options after the repaint is done as well. They are correct about the metal exterior parts only. If you have a good dealer, who will eat the cost to make a customer happy, then you can get everything else repainted. You could also pony up your own $5-8k to have it all repainted and use the check from Kia to replace what you paid to 'finish' their screwed up paint job.

EDIT: The replace and buyback options were stopped as of Dec 1st. Now your only option is a repaint and take the cash. That was stated on the letters we all got back at the end of July.

Yo man did you get yours repainted yet? Saw it sitting at Belzers a while back when I was driving by.... Wondering if you are going to keep it or not

I’m doing the buyback. I got a crappy paint job as my car is now two-tone.

That sucks... I’ll have to inspect mine more this summe but it’s a lease so I don’t mind right now

within a week I sent in paper work for the incentive if I kept my yellow stinger and got my check promptly. I have been treated well by KIA and their representatives.

The 1-owner yellow stingers will be collectible unicorns in the future, especially those that never needed a repaint.
I agree. However, I wonder if anyone in the US actually opted not to have it repainted and kept it too.

Some must have done. I can't be the only Stinger driver who thinks this way: And if my color was being treated like the Yellows, I'd not let anyone lay a hand on it when the paint has nothing wrong with it. I think that most of the Yellows were/are fine.

Mine would have been whit by now, stated having paint chipping off all over, roof, doors..pillars..it would have looked like hell in a few years.

That is true. I am happy to think that some were not affected.

I don’t believe Kia would have done the campaign if they didn’t believe most cars would be affected. I thought for several months mine was fine as there were no issues, but have since slowly accumulated multiple chips. Nowhere near as bad as some I’ve seen, but I imagine it will look pretty crummy over the next couple of years.

that was the reason I had my yellow repainted.....it was perfect when I took her in but I could not chance it...….

In my opinion, my color looks better than it did before. It was a little more washed out originally, whereas, the new yellow is brighter and glossier.

Not really: you're just looking at "her" through the eyes of luuuuv. :D

I would second @StungnTn’s sentiment. Mine looks simply amazing since the repaint. The job is cleaner looking, and the clear coat seems to allow the color to pop much more

So yesterday while I was getting tint put in, I saw the car under a florescent light for the first time, and noticed a bunch of small imperfections. The first picture shows a small bubble? The other two are some small black marks. One is rough and like a small crater, the other looks like a dark spot underneath the clear coat. There are probably at least a couple dozen of the small bubbles around the car and various spots, and a handful of small dark blemishes under the clear coat.

Am I over thinking this? Is this normal and just part of the deal? The guy doing my tint was pretty funny, he said just don’t look at with bright overhead lights and mentioned many nicer cars have the same blemishes. I’m sure no one else would notice these things as they wouldn’t look at the car as closely as I do, since it’s my baby.

I was going to start polishing it today to get out small scratches and swirls then throw some ceramic on it, but realized I didn’t have any polishing compound... should be here Saturday thanks to amazon. I was really curious what kind of results I would get after polishing.

My surrender is now rescheduled for later in the month and i need to provide my own notary this time since the dealership apparently does not have one and the surrender agent may or may not be.

So far the surrender process has been a total cluster for me. Kia denied re-cutting any checks and would rather try to deal with it after the surrender. There will obviously be added payments on my end due to this delay so it will be interesting to see how easily i can get money back for that and for the daily interest accrual that wont be paid for since there buyoff amount in now approaching 1 month old.

Hopefully this experience is just bad luck all around and others are not having the same difficult time giving a car back.

Regarding the flakes...mine was good to go for the longest time and then the flakes started showing up on a weekly basis on all parts of the car to include the inner door jambs and rear areas NOT covered by the repaint.

i was advised the car would go to auction after the dealer paints so will keep tabs and maybe re-buy it after that if i can.

I had to make a payment after the surrender as they didn't get my loan payed off in time and didn't want to risk a late payment. They of course payed it off the day after I made my payment to KMF..KMF sent my payment back to me after only a week, so it went pretty smoothly.

"Overthinking". "Normal." Both are subjective and only you can decide for yourself. If I ever face something like you guys have been going through, I am well prepared to weigh all the considerations after following your stories. And if I had just had a repaint, I first of all would not be looking at my car under super bright lights other than to inspect it. After that, just normal RL lighting for me. Why? "Nothing in life has any business being perfect." Especially a thing that is mass produced. A repaint is of course not part of that mass production. If you put more time and consideration and money into the paint job than Kia authorized, then yes, something closer to perfection should be demanded and delivered. A blemish would be fixed. A tiny "crater" or dark spot or bubble, etc., would be pointed to and the warranty for the higher priced shop would cover you: total satisfaction: but then, you'd pay thousand of dollars more for that elite repaint.

The "crater" gets a dob of touch up paint, fill it in and smooth it off. The bubbles? They will probably buff to near invisibility. The dark spots under the clear coat? I have no idea. Are they in glaringly obvious places? Or are they in places that you almost have to contort yourself to see? That's the kind of subjective value system you have to apply. I don't sweat the small stuff. Because time inflicts us all with small stuff; too much of it to try and do combat with. My "yardstick" for judging the appearance of my own baby: If she looks good from five or six feet away under daylight, we're good enough.

I agree. I always want perfection in everything I do though. Nothing wrong with that. It just so happens this is the first car I’ve ever owned and given two shits about. Nothing it noticeable from 5’ away so I’m just curious about what other people might think before I go and buff/polish it. I haven’t pointed any of it out to the dealership yet. I’m in a pretty low income part of the country and I don’t think my dealer has sold more than 10 stingers in any trim, and they aren’t used to picky customers and I’ve never been a picky customer, to a flaw. Either way, I’m completely happy with the car.
