Stingers Being Stolen

Where I worked in Kansas City, the company building was up on pillars with the employee parking lot at ground level under the building. The lot was surrounded by a 10' chain link fence with a gate and a Pinkerton guard at the gate who would open the gate for you when you showed him your employee badge. At the end of the day one of the engineers went down to go home and the shift lever in his 1965 Oldsmobile station wagon land yacht was just hanging there floppy? His engine was fine, but his transmission was missing. Sometime during the day? Jacked the car up? Removed the transmission? Carried it out of the lot? And nobody noticed???? Not even the Pinkerton guard 100 feet away??????

So yeah, if someone wants the car, there's not much way to prevent them from stealing it. I don't have many reoccurring nightmares, but one of them is my Corvette (that I sold 52 years ago) has been stolen.

Funny you say that about the dreams. I’ve often dreamt that my Challenger R/T is parked in the yard. I always wake up and get a twinge of disappointment that it was only a dream. I used to wax the engine bay in that thing and most everything under the hood was chrome, even the air cleaner in the trips. I sold it in 1980 and the new owner totaled it nine days after he bought it.

I have heard of at least three Stingers being stolen over here. One was a guy on the fb group I'm a member, he had his ' Rafa ' edition nicked which was very strange as being limited edition with a stripe down it it stuck out like dogs balls. They stole it from his work place because they found his keys. He ended up getting a new one because as you can imagine it went on a long joy ride, getting thrashed along the way and eventually dumped.

More Stingers have been on the news getting impounded for excessive speed or burn outs which comes under our " hoon laws " than getting stolen.

Has anyone seen any aftermarket security systems for the stinger that ties into the factory one? One that is a lot more sensitive and annoying.

I garage mine, so there's that...

But I do think a rottweiler with a genital fixation is one of the best anti-theft systems there is.

People break into garages as well but obviously it's 1000x better than just sitting out in the open. I personally like to park cars in front of the garage door as well so if they gonna break into the garage, they gonna have to break into at least one of the crappy cars and move it to get to the good stuff in the garage.

True. As everyone else is saying if someone wants it bad enough...

But that being said our bedroom is right over our garage, so if someone ties to break in chances are we'll hear it and react accordingly, and if last year when a garage door spring broke is any indication, we WILL hear it. In addition there's "guest parking" nearby which would be a better target for "crimes of opportunity" although I hope it never happens.

Stinger was just stolen yesterday night from a hotel parking lot. Pure speculation, but based off footage it was likely done with a signal repeater, as my hotel room was maybe 100-150’ from where the car was parked. No broken glass in lot. Strongly suggest using a faraday bag and having a tracker in the car. There are loads of visual identifiers since I’ve made a number of cosmetic tweaks to the vehicle. Super bummed by the situation as it’d been a phenomenal car so far and had recently been paid off.. just have to play the waiting game to see if it shows up but I’m sure it won’t be the same condition-wise as I kept it.

the faraday bag is my wallet. it isn't 100% secure because standing beside the car I can open the hatch and doors. but step away and push the lock button with the faraday bag flap pointing away from the car and it won't lock, so, the bag material does work still. anyone trying to 'paint' the signal would have to get close Ima guessing. inside a house or hotel room it should be unreachable.

Damn that sucks my dude. 50 yards is a HUGE distance to bounce off, how far from the key to the neatest outside wall?
The last footage I saw of repeaters being used, one guy walks along the building with the repeater, and the other watches what cars respond to the signals.

One more bloody thing to worry about. :cautious:

I have the faraday pouch that's advertised on this site. I think somebody got it for me from Amazon? Standing right next to the car with the keys in there and you can't unlock it, nor do the door handle lights come on. That's how it's supposed to be, nothing will open, tested it multiple times. I think yours maybe faulty.

No. Mine is the same one advertised here, too. It's just old. They all stop 100% blocking after a few months of continuous use.

I don't think that's supposed to happen. Does the mesh break down?

Would placing the fob in a aluminum foil wrap be sufficient? That is, get home place in wrap, call it a day?

I think that it gets worn, the coating rubs off.

absolutely. I keep my spare fobs in a couple layers of foil. it's easy to use for a while. you just wrap it up and fold the ends in snuggly, and when you want to take it out, you just unfold the ends and unroll it. But it's super easy to just rip off a fresh length of foil whenever you want to. the faraday bags are convenient when your with the car, like shopping trips.

I double checked, I got mine for my birthday a couple years ago. It still works, I have heard that they do break down after awhile but only after a few months? My keys sit in the bag every day. I wonder what happens with the material though over time?

As for the tinfoil method, that works just as good. I used to do that, it's just not as convenient messing with tinfoil, the bag is just easier.

I can only speak from experience. The cheapo bags that I bought on Amazon literally stopped working after three months. The one advertised on the forum is better quality, but I couldn't say that the bag material itself is any different, because mine stopped blocking the fob after about the same time. This is using the bag continuously. As I said, mine is my wallet. I don't put other keys in it, only credit cards and the like. It came in a two-pack. I should probably just switch to the fresh one.
