Stingers Being Stolen

It may not be for everyone but I use the second amendment to deter any carjackers.
In your sleep? That takes special powers. Hah.

I'm going to be hardcore shopping soon, might be getting my dream GT2 w/Red Interior next week. I was wondering how often a car like this gets stolen. Anyone have any experience or research with that?
Hmmm do you live in the hood? Do you live in an poor neighborhood? or you live in a affluent area...? Where do you park the car? What do you wanna use the car for? That pretty much answers your question.

My Stinger was stolen on Thursday in the early hours of the morning, they used a relay booster to get in and drive it away. Luckily the idiots parked it next to another stolen car that had a tracker in it so Police recovered it that same day and I got it back that afternoon. Still ripped the boot up looking for a tracker, those boot parts are expensive...

Key's now go into a little faraday box I got off Amazon.

Thinking to pop the door handle off and disconnect the connector as the keyless button is never used and honestly it's more of a hindrance than convenience (anybody saying it isn't hasn't had their car stolen so easily...)

Relay booster? How do you use the key if its in a faraday cage? Or is range just very reduced?

What's your work flow for unlocking the door? I use the push button all the time, key rarely comes out of pocket.

Relay booster just means somebody stands next to the door handle with a device while a second person uses an antenna and signal boosting device to scan for the key and send the signal to the device next to the door handle, tricking the car into thinking the key is next to it.

The key was NOT in a faraday cage, never has been since owning the car. Didn't even really think about it as never thought it would be an issue.

Both keys are now in a faraday cage box when sitting at home and will keep that going until I disable the antenna's. Obviously take the key out the box when leaving the house and then use it as normal.

My key is either in the little jeans pocket or a normal pocket and I press the button through the material, that's been the case for the last 3 cars I owned with push start (Stinger is the first with exterior comfort access) so i'm used to it, never use the button on the door.

We're creatures of habit. The honda had no button to press to unlock. Simply touch the backside of the door handle with fob near by to unlock. Press button on door to lock.

The G had a push button similar to the stinger, push to unlock, push again to relock.

Car is parked in the garage so they'd have to break in there first. Spare fob at home has battery removed. I suppose it might be useful to protect the active fob. Relatively safe neighborhood with more expensive cars parked on the street. If I lived in a more questionable neighborhood, I'd probably attached the club to the wheel too.

I live in a good area, plenty of nice cars around. Kia has poor security on their key fobs and it's a fast car so easy target. Will be moving to somewhere with a driveway soon so will have an electric gate alongside full CCTV and motion lighting setup. Until then, key will be kept in a box. The antenna's look easy enough to just unplug and that might be my "fix" as faraday cages/pouches can still leak especially over time.

I discovered this a little while back: went up to my car with the fob in a faraday bag that I know worked over two years ago: and the damned thing might as well be a grocery bag: the car opened with alacrity. Tried out the other three faraday bags I have and only one of them works reliably to block the signal. At the same time, I finally tried the aluminum foil "trick": wrapped my spare fob in two layers of foil and voila! no signal: so, it sits inside the house in a security box, in its foil wrap, and I put the other fob in the still-functional faraday bag each night.

I work at a Police impound lot. I have yet to see any Stinger's stolen come in but we've only had 1 Stinger in, which was towed due to a snow emergency. I have seen plenty of stolen Optima's come in. One being a 2020 that came in last night. Obviously not many Stinger's out there compared to Optima, Sorento and the more common cars. Also, we get just as many cars stolen from "good" neighborhoods as ones considered "bad" crimes of opportunity like stolen cars seem to happen regardless of the neighborhood from what I see. The only difference is that people from the more affluent areas are surprised when it happens.

After reading this thread, I'll be trying the tinfoil idea now.

My Stinger sits outside in the driveway as there is no garage. I live out in the woods and there are no houses anywhere in sight of mine. I’ve had two Optimas and now the Stinger, and have never had an issue. I think I am helped by the fact that I live with a remarkable anti theft system, a 115 lb. Rottweiler that hears EVERYTHING! She also is very sensitive to anyone coming in the yard, so not many worries here.

Living in the woods as you say, probably not much foot traffic walking by your property I suppose?

I have a friend that has security cameras on his home plus he has 2 pitbulls AND a Rottweiler, multiple attempts have been made to steal his car, unfortunately he drives a Honda. Any Honda CR-V, Civic or Accord are the most stolen cars I see at work, new or old. Luckily none successful in part, thanks to his dogs. He's gotten so fed up the last attempt he basically just opened the door and let them loose on the guys who must've had some kinda device similar to what was mentioned. He thinks it was the same people. Since the last attempt, which was awhile ago now, he's been fine. It's like the criminals know he'll do whatever he has to do to try and secure his property, including unleashing his dogs on em.

You guys making me think I need a faraday bag and a roll of foil now. Never even considered it in my hood but my neighbors car was stolen a couple weeks ago..

I'm just happy we're not Mopar guys. Not only are their cars, getting stolen left and right and it's notoriously easy to do, but people aren't being picky about whether or not you're still in it when they go for it.

My babies are tucked away in a garage. Protected from the elements and thieves.

Hate to "break" it to you but having a garage, doesn't mean you're immune. Thieves can get into garages too. Obviously your cars are "safer" inside but I had one of those this week too. Owner went out of town for just the weekend, neighbors were watching the house while they were gone. Neighbors claimed they just went to the grocery store for a bit. Came back home to find the neighbors garage had been busted into and somebody had stolen his car. Now, I'm just telling you what the report had said, don't know for sure if the neighbors were involved somehow, or if they didn't watch the place at all and trying to cover their own asses or what.

Neighbor's can't be watching someone's property all the time, can they? They're not a camera after all.

I suppose one solution is to leave the car on jack stands with wheels off and lugnuts hidden.

My garage doors are alarmed to my home alarm system and I have a camera inside of my garage as well as cameras around outside of my home. But if someone wants it that bad I also have very high coverages on my auto insurance.

I feel like if somebody wants it bad enough, it probably doesn't matter what kinda set up you have. In my neighborhood, I feel like having extra lights, home security and some cameras is at least a deterrent and hopefully, thieves would target someplace less secure. I mean, I don't want any of my neighbors places broken into but you get what I'm saying?

So by the same token, once the door is open, the booster also works to make the car think the fob is in the car so it will start?
Once started, the engine won't shutoff, even if they drive away and the signal is lost, it will just beep at you for a few seconds.
