Track/Course Stinger - A Track Day Review

50-55 degrees and couldn't keep her cool? That's, well, alarming. I know it's not a track car. But I want to enjoy it on the track at 8 tenths.

The oil temp was creeping up slowly. Enough for me to back out of it for a lap and let it catch up. I honestly don't know if that is "hot" for this platform, or normal. They debuted the car at Nurburgring, so I'm sure it's had more than enough track time. I'd imagine it's normal, but can't really say since not many others have tracked their Stingers on road courses.

Thanks.

I wonder if that aftermarket oil cooler does much.

And before that debut, they designed and tested AT the Ring. Kia's development and test site was/is on the main straight.

That is sort of why I think the oil temp isn't an issue. I'm probably not the same quality driver as a factory test driver, so I'm sure they "milked" the car a little harder than I can.

Lol. The way I drive, I'd finish a 24 hour race on the same brakes and tires, and the brakes would be "practically new" and the tires would still be at "80%". But my straightaway speeds would be impressive. :D I'd also finish dead last (other than some who DNF).

Thx for taking the time to write this up. I’m getting ready to track my stinger in a few weeks. I’ve never done that with any car at any point before. Anything you can suggest I do other than keep an eye on the oil temp? Should I look at doing anything about the brake pads? What kind of wear should I expect on the tires?

Larry H. Miller raceway? (aka Utah Motorsports Campus) Wide Open Wednesday? Utah Driving Event on the Racetrack or Autocross Course at UMC I'm tempted. The way I drive I'd expect to use up the last 3mm of my Pilot Sport 4s, but not have any trouble with my brakes.

It really depends on how hard you push it. The tires, will get "marbled" which is normal on the track. You can walk away from the track needing brakes, tires, brake pads, brake fluid, and an oil change. You can also walk away from the track and have put a little wear on the car, but not much.

Keep an eye on the pads, they struggle. Now that we are getting into the hot months, I'd expect fade to come early and stay. The pedal will feel "gritty" at first, then get soft. When you feel the grit, take a few laps and cool down. Depending on the track, I would do a 2-1 style setup. 2 hot laps, one cool down to manage heat

My track day preparations are under way. The first thing I did was get Steel Braided Brake lines and DOT 5.1 Motul Racing Brake Fluid. The other thing I'm waiting in the mail for now is the Oil Cooler Kit with the optional secondary radiator. I'm also in the hunt for a larger transmission cooler than the stock. The Stock only has 4 rows of cooling and I'd like to find one with at least 6 rows.

I can tell you from my past experience the OEM brake pads wear very fast on the track with all the hard braking. I went through a set of front brakes at VIR in two days! (And that was with a little KIA Spectra5 with a total of 138 hp)!! I bet the Stinger will eat OEM brakes in one day. I'm looking at the Brembo Upgrade for GT cars. Bigger Brembos and 15" rotors. Hard to find.

Please let us know how hard the oil cooler upgrade is to install. Do you still have stock FMIC? I'm curious if the oil cooler will interfere.

There's a brake upgrade kit? What size wheels are needed? Will stock 19s clear?

According to Brembo they require a minimum of 19" rim's. The Stinger GT 420 got the upgrade. I think it takes a little modification, but is possible.
Just search for Brembo upgrade kit for GT.

Do you have a link? I would be interested in increasing the size of the rotors. Assuming they are 2 piece. It doesn't make sense to have a larger 1 pc, unless it can dissipate heat faster.
