Paint Swirls on Midnight Black

Any thoughts on getting rid of swirls on the Midnight Black paint? Also preventing advice?

depending on how deep the scratches are. for easy DIY solution, you may want to start with a polish. check out Auto Glym's super rasin polish or Carpro Essence. In the case of Essence, it will give you about 6 months of protection after polish. you can easily do that at home and by hand.

Carpro makes another product called Essence Plus, it has no abrasive and has fillers. if your scratches are fine enough, it may already be sufficient. also provide 6 months of ceramic protection by itself - you can layer it with other ceramic infused sealants for better/longer protection.

I am in Korea, Carpro is a local brand and fairly reasonable to obtain. In the UK, check out Anglewax - they make good stuff and should provide the best value for those in the UK.

Of course you can do it yourself, but then you need a machine ... can't handpolish an entire car unless you're completely mad Imagine how long it already takes iwth a machine (several criss cross passes with a high revving machine) and you trying to achieve the same with just arm moves....

You can get yourself a cheaper DualAction machine like a DAS6, a 1-step polish like Sonax EX 04-06 and a medium soft foam pad and then do the entire thing yourself. DAs and medium pads and such a polish are pretty beginner safe.

Really £500-600 pounds for a polish and 5 year protection .... on a £40k car?

If you want to do yourself, there are many youtube videos on how to buff out swirls and apply your own ceramic coat. You can then use the "C2 Liquid Crystal" yourself after wash. However you should apply 2 coats and then keep that repeated every 6mths. But at £45 a bottle you'll soon spend a few hundred over 3 years.

That's the cheapest options, buff yourself and apply C2.

However I highly recommend the 5 Year + EXO coating at a min (CLS Black option) (£650 if removing swirls and applying coat - would have been less if you had pre-swirls), it will keep your black car swirl-less for years, and easily protect for a normal 3 year ownership.

Blacks are a pain to keep clean and looking good, a Cermaic coat is the best option unless you want to spend £2-5k on a wrap or PPF.

Thanks - the Carpro product looks like it’s worth a try and is readily available it seems. I’ll wait for better weather first though.

Well, the thing is, you will always going to collect some swirls. Unless you just leave your car in the garage and covered up. We only see the swirls and scratches much easier on black cars. That still shouldn't stop us from trying to minimizing it and protect our cars the best we can.

I have my Stinger ceramic coated and I am seeing more and more swirls and stuff after every wash. The ceramic coating helps add another layer(s) of protection on your clear coats but will it also get scratched. But instead of having them on the clear coat, it's on the coating.

Due to the environment I am in, I also 'polish' my car by hand. I just do one or two sections at a day. There are also polishing products that are more hand-polish friendly.

One thing I can suggest is not to go directly into products containing abrasives. I almost always start with products that are the least aggressive and if that doesn't work, be more aggressive. Agressiveness is a combination products and tools - for example, I start with Carpro Essence Plus (no abbrasives) with a soft foam applicator, if that doesn't work, I'll use Essence plus with a Microfiber applicator.

On the other hand, older cars with tons of scratches including deep ones, I'd say you need compounding and machines like the others suggested. I am assuming you are referring to a relatively new car here.

If you are getting swirls from washing your car then you are washing it wrong, or getting it washed by bad people.

spend some time reviewing autogeek.com . lots of how to vids and great products , dark cars look fantastic but are very prone to "show " swirl mark vs lighter colors .....................good luck !

Try a clay bar, it’s a lot of work but properly applied/used can give excellent results...especially for the most fastidious of owners.

Clay bar simply removes contaminants from the surface. Run your fingers over an older vehicle, and you can feel tiny imperfections. That's what it removes, but it doesn't fix scratches/swirls.

If you want to clay, make sure the car is neatly cleaned before. And get a soft (usually blue or white) clay. Hard clays can cause more damage than fix it.

Also claying will do absolutly nothing for hair scratch swirls.

I am getting the dealership to apply the glasscoat protection to my Stinger, as part of the deal i got. I'm hoping this will avoid the swirls and marks.

It will help, but if they do not prepare the surface correctly then all advantages are negated.

Also you need to have proper washing techniques in order to avoid scratching the clear again.

Does anyone know if the Stinger paint is hard or soft. My Obsidian Black 2015 Infiniti Q50S had the softest paint and was a pain in the ass to make look good. If you rubbed a microfiber over a just polished area it would mare.

From what I've seen it seems like it is not as hard as the crazy german stuff (aka BMW) but not super soft like some of the japanese brands i've seen. It is somewhere in the middle.

Swirls on black paint are an inevitability (IMO). I never let the dealer wash or use an automatic car wash. I’m religious with the foam cannon and 2 bucket method and I still had a good amount of swirling in about 6 months.

This past weekend I took the Flex DA, Meguiars Mirror Glaze, and a tangerine Lake Country pad. Very pleased with the outcome. Had to use a microfiber cutting pad to get the deep stuff out.
