Dealer Markup Ourisman Kia - Chantilly, Virginia

Won’t get into it too much but went to 4 Kia dealerships and Woodbridge beat every single one with ease. The only other one even close would have been in Maryland, mainly due to lower processing fees.

Bought mine in Jan and not one single Stinger at Woodbridge had a markup. Actually I was the first one to pickup a GT2 AWD from there in Virginia. Two others bought from there, but were out of state.

Nothing against Ourisman in any form or way, but I did try to buy an Optima in 2016 from there and no deal was made. Went down the street and picked up a Sonata Limited for $8k off MSRP. Ourisman wasn’t even close.

I’ll always try multiple dealerships, but Woodbridge has been honestly hard to beat...for me at least.

In the future, Ourisman will continue to be one that I go to and attempt deals with.

I’ll agree that there are some folks that play the price game. Couple years back, one of the sales manager at Ourisman low balled me on my trade, even after I told him I used to be in the industry and don’t want to play games. Ourisman lost 3 deals on that. Second car I worked with the GM and David Kim got a good deal, 3rd was at Browns because Ourisman didn’t have the car in stock for me to drive (which incidentally I ended up leasing on the spot). Point being, depending on when you go and who you end up dealing with, they might play games with pricing. The older folks are more apt to do that as that is what they are used to from the old days.

When I worked with Hyundai in NY many moons ago, our sales manager was about moving inventory, he worked a fair deal with the customers and made sure we were compensated for our time. We had to give each customer a full walk around of the product and a test drive explaining the features and benefits of the safety system and what made the vehicle competitive. Not everyone wanted to do that but those that did, if they could afford it ended up getting a new car. We had to be respectful and listen to what the customer needs were and directing them to the product that best suit them. He told us we were sales consultants, our job was not to talk price, but find the right product for the client, he handled the pricing. We didn’t have to TO, he would come to see the client to introduce himself and ask if we did a good job on the product and ask what we could do to make them happy with their purchase. Yep, assume the sales was done and it was surprising how many qualified folks made offers and he met or at least made an equitable offer to get them to buy. Folks that came in on Elantras sometimes left with Sonatas as they had the better incentives and ended up costing less than a loaded Elantra with similar equipment. Much like you guys see me telling folks to go GT2 as the incentives and dealer price most times end up being a better deal than a base GT or GT1. At resale time it will also benefit you if you have more equipment.

Ourisman has been making changes but if the sales person/manager can’t make you comfortable to sit down and make the deal, then that is their fault. I tell folks all the time I work with, it’s about relationship. If i’m happy with you, I will buy from you and send you more business. Tyler in my opinion has the making of a great sales consultant. Yes, he is young and still has a lot to learn, which will happen over time but he seems to be making strides quickly there as evidenced by those here who have worked with him. While i’m still a while away from getting a vehicle, he keeps me updated and I in turn share the info on the current deals to folks so they can get in and make a deal.

We each have places/people we are comfortable dealing with, I’ve had good and not so good from Oursman sales folks over the years but i’ve been servicing my cars there even if I didn’t buy from them and they have been great. I look forward to them making changes and taking their sales team to a more customer focused and high line sales consultant status which will make folks getting Cadenza, Stingers and K900 feel like they are at Audi or BMW or 3ven Lexus. If that treatment trickles down to all their product, then when KIA switches over to higher priced vehicles, they will be ready to service the folks coming from the “big” brands.

All customers are not the same. I have never, ever, test-driven a car before I bought it, and I've never been burned by a car. I do my research out of magazine reviews (in the old days) and online today. I know exactly what I want, do a visual check (usually from literature or online) of things on which I will not compromise, and I get bids on my cars directly from the sales manager if possible. I did sit in a Stinger on the showfloor of one dealer to see it it "fit" me.

I hate car salesmen. I hate playing "let's make a deal" as the salesman turns into a puppy dog running back and forth to the sales manager trying to play my offer against theirs. I refuse to do that. If the salesman can't make the deal, then get the hell out of the way and let me talk to the person who can. I order my cars brand-new, undriven, right from the factory, or in the case of my Pontiac G8GT and Stinger, I order from what's in the pipeline. I don't want a car that's been on the showfloor with the battery run flat and people sitting in it. I don't want a damn demo that every prospective buyer has hammered during a test drive. I'm not an emotional buyer and I can always wait for my order to come in -- months if necessary to get exactly what I want and none of what I don't want....no high profit dealer add-ons. If dealerships don't respect my preferences, I walk. There was a $10,000 difference between the best and worst quote on my GT2 (including the finance rebate one dealer never mentioned.) I tell them they get one chance, one bid and I'm shopping the hell out of it. You want a quick, easy sale or not? Takes 10 minutes of your time.....

I fully respect your view point and after my recent experience there is solid wisdom in your buying approach. One caveat I must throw out there for the general population considering your method. The test drive, in my opinion, is one of, if not THE most critical portion of the buying process. For me it came down to the Stinger and Acura TLX A-SPEC. A quick test drive put me in Stinger camp. This is/was my formula for purchase/lease a new car:

* Research, online reviews of all information about all cars, auto shows, comparative tests, etc. Then focus on the car hat I want to see in my driveway.
* Find the car or cars in inventory within a reasonable distance from home.
* Dealer contact (online, phone)
* Pricing via online or phone communication, gives me a chance to research dealer offers and details of the deal without dedicating all my time waiting at the dealership.
* Offer and commitment.
* Delivery, inspect, test drive, sign and drive.
* Enjoy.

I have had some people come in on the KIA Niro and say “I heard this vehicle has a lot of road noise”. Some people agreed, most didnt. T
 
Researching the vehicle and looking up reviews is great. But there is nothing like a test drive. Someone might say there is a lot of road noise.. You drive it and here nothing. You have too experience it for yourself not just look up reviews about someone else’s experience.

I totally agree with you on that. Everyone is different. I personally like test driving the vehicle, because every trim level of the Stinger has a different driving feel.

Research gets me to the test drive, the test drive is the major factor in the decision to purchase.
 
Confirmed. I was at this dealer a couple of weeks ago and they have a markup of approximately $2,500 and low balls the crap out of trade-ins. However, the salesman I was working with, Felton Worrell, was nothing but pleasant and professional!
Agree 100 per cent. They low balled me $2000 on trade in and quoted a price for a basic GT that I finally bought a GT2 AWD for the exaact same proce these guys wanted for the GT. Plus I git the exact color I wanted. The salesman was too aggressive for my taste.

I dodged a bullet by not buying from this dealer. Poor inventory on Stingers, low balled me by 2000 on trade in and quoted an inflated price on a base GT. I finally bought a Panthera metallic GT1 AWD for the exact same price these guys quoted on a basic GT. In all fairness you cant blame the dealer for a shoddy salesperson.

The problem is not the salesperson, it is the sales manager. All salesmen must work between you and the sales manager. Salesmen cannot make deals in any dealership I know. You get a high price from the salesperson as a starter and then they expect you to complain and ask for a lower price. It's part of the game they play, but all final offers come from the sales manager so the salesperson is pretty much out of the picture except to be nice to customers and bring their prey to the SM.

i will chime in here and say Tyler is one of the best if not the best to deal with at Chantilly. When i was looking for a yellow he kept in touch with me to let me know when it was coming, even let me know that he was going on vacation. Unfortunately i did not buy from them as they only got a GT2, which is not what i was looking for.

Please dont insult my intelligence. Anyone who has gone through an auto purchase knows full well that the "I need to talk to my manager" bit is a joke. Along with "let me have your keys, I need to move your car"

A bit O.T. here, but it's worth telling, I guess.

Many years ago a friend of mine who buys used cars went to a Cadillac dealer in K.C. and wanted to test drive a used Ford Taurus. They got his car to evaluate for trade-in and when he returned from the test drive, he decided he didn't want the Ford. They wouldn't give him his keys back to his own car. After about 15 minutes of argument over his own car keys, my friend had to get on the phone (which they didn't want to give him -- before the days of cell phones) and call the police to obtain his keys so he could go home. Needless to say, he never went back to that dealership which is (I think) still in business in K.C.
