• PLEASE! It is VERY important that this area is not used for the discussion of technical issues with your Stinger. This section is for posting about regional-specific things like Stinger clubs, events, local vendor or dealer recommendations, KiaStinger.com member sightings, etcetera... In other words, I do NOT want people to need to scour through several different sections to find answers about their heads up display. That's why there's a section dedicated specifically to discussions like that. THANK YOU!

Just wondering who else is having brake issues in Australia

I had the same issue with shudder on the original rotors. I changed to Protex rotors and Protex UltraPlus Pads. I just checked the photos I took and it was just over a year ago.
Stops great and no shudder

Did you have your discs machined when you replaced the pads?

I've got the same issues at $30,000. Been getting worse since 25k ish. The hard braking thing isnt working anymore either to clean them up. I cant justify nearly $2k on a rotors and pads so was going to try machining the rotors and DBA SP's but maybe now thiking about the XP's on the front like "Stinger GT SS" has posted about previously. I see that Stinger GT SS has done both the pads and rotors to good effect but wondering if anyone has cleaned up (machined) their OEM rotors and upgraded just the pads? and if so has it worked?

Also are the DBA XP's much louder/dirtier than their SP cousins?
No I didn't have them machined. Ended up buying another set of brake pads. Was OK for a bit then started the shudder again. Finally bit the bullet and took off the rotors and had them machined. Brakes are great now. In the end, the rotors were warped. I personally believe not to brake in the pads with the heavy braking. Just a few firm brakesand let them bed in slowly with normal driving.

I decided to order the DBA street performance (green) pads all around and was about to have my rotors machined and the pads installed when KIA rang to book the car in for some other warranty work (roof paint strip). Anyhoo I again raised the issue and asked them to put the pads in for me and clean the rotors which they at first balked at as they were aftermarket and then agreed to - at my expense. Negotiated an hours labour to change all 4 pads and clean. Interestingly since the first time I raised the issue with them another KIA had come in with the same complaint so I think they were starting to realise that I wasn't making this up.

To be fair they were pretty good about it. When I rocked up at the dealers the service manager had been briefed and came out with the service advisor, looked at the rotors and agreed they looked 'glassed' (his words). Before I left them to it I put it to them that if the pads did fix the issue then clearly the rotors were not warped and that would indicate the issue was with the OEM pads which really should be their problem not mine...

Picked the car up and the shudder is gone. Without being too smug about it I suggested that I shouldn't have had to pay them to prove the issue was theirs (KIA's) not mine and that had I followed their advice I would have spent even more money to machine the discs and still not fixed the issue. They actually agreed but said that as KIA hasn't formally recognised an issue with a technical bulletin or whatever that there was nothing they could do on the cost front but seemed to appreciate the insight and at least know what to look for with other Stingers.

So overall a disappointing 'official' response from KIA but a decent effort from the dealer and very pleased to sort the shudder out without having to resort to higher cost solutions. I also followed DBA's break in procedure - 10 or so moderate brakings then 3 aggressive ones from about 60kmh without stopping.

Hopefully your experience with the DBA pads and the shudder returning is an isolated situation with your rotors and not the pad/rotor combination. Time will tell.

I've owned my Stinger for 6 months. Late 2019 model with 49k on the clock and am experiencing a faint shudder. Took it into a Phil Gilbert Kia today for it's scheduled service and mentioned the brakes. They came back with this: Your rotors have heat marks/damage on them due to heavy braking so rotors and pads need to be replaced (can't be machined apparently) and because of these heat marks which were the owners fault it won't be covered under warranty.

Seems like complete bullshit to me. How can using them for their intended cause be a reason to void the warranty? The previous owner was an older guy in his 60's and I've been very easy on it. Pretty unhappy. Not sure whether to take the issue to Kia head office or try to push the dealer.

I have a 22 month old Stinger GT with 22 000km on the clock. (Purchased new) No brake shudder issues yet.
However when new, I performed a brake bedding in process, so maybe it has made a difference. We'll see.

My MY2019 GT now has brake shudder, it's actually warped disks both front have 15thou (0.375mm) left and 20thou (0.5mm) right runout on both surfaces non uniform runout. This to me is a demonstration of poor disk metallurgy, as the disk are 29.7mm left and 29.5mm right thickness so worn quite a lot.

The disks also don't have enough spare meat even if brand new to machine out this much runout, so they need to be replaced. Just had 5 year service (50000km) actual 32000km car, so it's only been driven sparingly, but the problem started at 29000k. KIA claimed wear and tear and hot spots, I called bullshit, they won't budge and the dealer don't care. Car still has 80% meat on original pads.

I've always been a fan of DBA but interested to hear what others people have installed, and their experience, I'm after good brakes for street use and no excess dust or noise, no I don't want the AMG brake experience, I want the car to remain quiet and refined.

I'm at 82,000km - MY20GT - and get a violent shudder when the brakes are hot, normal city driving doesn't tend to show much of a vibration, but tackling Clyde/Brown mountain in NSW will have the passengers asking whats wrong with the car! ...so like others, I want to get this resolved. I will have the local Goodyear tyre/brake centre replace front brakes with slotted rotors and correctly matched pads. When I spoke with them last week they were not aware of Stinger issues, but they did give me the confidence that they know what they were doing and can help. No huge hurry but I plan to get this done in the next few months. When they conducted a visual inspection they said the front rotors had become glazed, indicating they had got too hot. They suggested I get them to resurface the existing rotors and fit new pads and see how that goes, but I am more inclined to get new slotted rotors. I intend to leave the rear brakes as they are now (but will get a quote for 4x slotted rotors to consider it). Quite what make of rotors and pads they are going to fit - I do not know. Their techs seem far better than the Kia dealership on this, so I am going to have to trust them. At the recent service, Kia dealership said the brakes were perfect!

Yeah I'm of the opinion there is not enough meat on the disk to get all my runout out, and if your are shaking that much, I don't think it will machine out. The disks are only 30mm when new, mine 29.5 mm now, and will require a 1mm cut to remove all the hardened spots and may require more. They are only rated to 28mm so given the car and it's performance, I would be careful getting them machined, because most brake places around here, will cut the disks deep to do it as quickly as possible. Dealership mechanics are deaf, blind and have no sense of feeling, they are not the most skilled diagnosticians, just saying.

I’ve been running dba slotted rotors + xp & sp pads (as per dba performance car recommendation) since Jan. 2020, great upgrade & they are especially compliant under heavy braking.
Im only street use & properly installed (I had them fitted buy a mechanic who works n performance cars) these are quiet & refined.
Also note that these are performance brakes, you should always expect to get some dust, I find the dba pads are minimal in this area.

Thank you, I shall try to do the same!

I had meant to clarify in my earlier post that at a recent service done by a Kia dealer they could find no fault with my brakes, and of course they had the wheels off, on the hoist, and measured wear for their report.

Goodyear Gungahlin could instantly identify that my rotors were glazed without even removing the wheel!

Go dba rotors, Australian made for Australian conditions, you’ll find all the part numbers on an attached photo I posted on the first page of this thread.
I just took a shot of front & rear, this is after 4.5 years & about 32,000kms.

Anyone knows any good shop around Melbourne where I can get the brake upgrade work done and where the blokes knows what they are doing ?

If they also stick DBA rotors and pads that's would he even better , but if not then a recommendation for place to buy the upgrade kit would be very helpful.
