The rough shift issue just started with mine yesterday , only upshifts in regular or manual , really hard shifts and the engine light has come on now .......................downshifts are fine . I'll take it in this week .
Interested to see what the issue is, especially since it triggered your MIL (engine light).
Mine has had rough upshifts (third to fourth) mostly when cold since new, every mode except sport and practically never when manually shifting. I feel like mine is a programming glitch but the genius dealer says rough shifts are normal when cold...not that rough!
Honestly I'm just gonna let it blow out fourth gear if they're not going to do anything about it, then they can replace the whole trans under warranty. If it doesn't break then I guess it wasn't a problem.
Same problem.. same plan. Might wait for it to cause a real problem and make them fix it because of warrenty.
Sometimes 2nd to 3rd... and other times 3rd to 4th... or could just be my lack of tracking what gear I'm in accurately. Always when cold. Manual paddle shifting seems to prevent the problem. It seems the problem may be getting worse and when it hard-shifts, the RPMs briefly go up a bit too...
Will keep an eye on this to hear what other people find out.

Sorry for not continuing my issue in this thread , as I reported in a new thread my rough upshifts were diagnosed as being caused by wires being chewed by rats /mice or ?? , the wires were repaired and retaped and all is back to normal . I had been parking my car in a new spot at our Marina that was next to the garbage containers which is the likely spot where this ocurred ....................give you cars a good inspection to see if any "gnawing" is going on ..........good luck !

My Honda DCT bike also jerks when cold, it uses special transmission fluid, JASO MA certified, also 10w30 is the recommended but it will still jerk in cold weather until warms up - better do this than slip.
I don't know what fluid our cars use but I also get the rough first few cold shifts and then quickly warms up. Almost as if the transmission fluid needs to have less viscosity - no clue.

I fully agree that parts (including trans) operate differently cold that when at full operating temp. What is odd with mine is that I have never experienced these gear "slams" in sport mode, or when manually shifting from gear 3 to 4, which is when the problem occurs. Sport mode may be an indication of a change in line pressure alleviates the issue, I'm not sure if commanding shifts via the paddles also does something with line pressure? If not that, I think it's bad programming. I'll probably pull the battery for a good chunk of time one day and see if it resets.
Good idea removing the battery out for some time - on my bike there is actually a reset procedure you can do to reset the transmission and it requires that be ONLY done when the oil / engine is warmed up to normal temps, which tells me calibration should only be done when fluid is warmed up.
Back to our cars, I think rough shifts = normal in cold temps.
On my Wife's car, CVT RVR, no torque converter it won't even shift, it will REV HIGH until it warms up as if it's desperate to warm up so it CAN shift! This only happens in -30C weather though...
I'd rather have our rough shifts (i.e. confirmed shift) rather than no shift or extreme HIGH REVVING until it desperately warms up.

Lots of cars hold the rpms higher to accelerate warm-up as part of an emissions reduction strategy. Sport mode also holds the rpms higher before shifting.
The only time (so far) I get any clunking is when the car is cold (engine not up to operating temp, so likely the transmission isn't either) and I am driving very gingerly--and the one shift (between 3rd and 4th, I guess--the car is travelling and revving so slowly I can't even tell what gear it's in) is a bit harsh because the car probably shouldn't shift yet at that point.
Sport mode will not allow a shift to occur at such a low rpm and probably neither will manual shifting. Ironically, it has a low-rpm cut-off that prevents premature shifting. So it makes total sense that the problem cannot be replicated in either of those modes.
I don't have this /\ /\ /\ from Drive to Park, but I DO have it intermittently from Reverse to Drive...cold or warm...ensuring I'm coming to a compete stop in between.
What I've noticed more often is at about 20-30 miles an hour, if I step on it it seems like it's searching for gears constantly and never actually finds it. just keeps downshifting or upshifting I'm not sure what the f*** it's doing but it's awful these Transmissions are terrible when it comes to that. I just want a 6-speed with a goddamn clutch in it is that too much to ask for these days. I won't say I regret buying the vehicle but this 8-speed automatic transmission is pure shit I hate it. I just came from a supercharged Audi RS4 with a real clutch in a real shifter in my hand so I am getting used to this but I don't like it. Did they even make an available stick shift for these cars or they all 8-speed shitoautomatics. and what is up with the red line on the paddle shift it just nosedives losing all momentum even if I get close to red line but not even at redline before shifting, so basically the paddle shifts are completely useless as well I just don't understand what is going on here sorry for the rant.

Not finding the right gear is a unique complaint in my experience on the forum. Kia's inhouse transmission is, by all reviews I've seen, a solid and very good one. The typical observation about letting the trans just do its job (as compared to using the paddle shifters) is that it "knows" how to find the right gear. So, your issue sounds like a potential one-off. That would mean, of course, "lucky you".
As for redline: it sounds like you are testing it: pushing a gear to redline and not upshifting, to see what happens. Of course, the car is going to take over and upshift. It is set up to do that. You can't push through the redline area willynilly playing around to see what happens. The car won't let you. If you object to the car upshifting for you when you push into the red I can only say, "shift faster".
Yeah I think it's actually a tuning issue now it's got no power I've lost everything, maybe the plugs burnt out. I have been takes jb4 on map to and thought it was on map 1. So I'm thinking it's misfiring and downshifting /becauseo upshifting that I'm not sure. It just started doing it a ton that's why I mentioned it, now I have no boost and no power. I've contacted burger Motorsport with some logs. We will see what the hell is going on. Hopefully I haven't done damage.
Depending on which mode you're in, you CAN get it to bounce off the rev limiter. I have the GT1 (manual shifter) and even then, in manual mode it sometimes shifts for me - annoying. I'm still trying to narrow down all the different situations - I know in some modes, it will bounce off the rev limiter, like the "long-press traction disable" - although I want those nannies on most of the time..

Yes, the true manual mode only engages when you have some/all nannies off. There seem to be some differences reported by owners here--hard to tell if it's based on build dates or just misunderstandings.
I hear ya - I am also confused because I swear this did NOT happen (auto upshift with nannies on, with lever in manual mode) the last time I tried it. I have wondered if it's maybe because I used the paddles a few times in manual mode, which kind of gave the ECU the go-ahead to do some shifting again? Need to try manual mode with nannies on, ONLY using the shifter.
