Fix for rear hatch rattle (video)

Wanted to give a quick synopsis of what I've done and the result on my 2021 GT...

1) Immediately noticed the thunk, the worse the bump the louder the thunk. Googled and found many posts and a few videos. Remedied using some 1/4" thick foam insulating strip (adhesive on one side), placing across the existing foam padding and across where the screws come through (punching a small hole for the screws). Adds just enough gap when compressed once the screws are tightened. It eliminated about 95% of the thunk, only the worse bumps would thunk and only a little.

2) Curious about removing all thunk, purchased some 5/16" washers at home depot. Installed two washers as described online (one for each screw). The thunk was entirely gone, but at speed I now had a persistent (and annoying) whistling sound. Removed the washers and the thunk reappeared but the whistling sound went away.

3) Reapplied strip foam from #1, thunk is again mostly gone and no whistling. Man those tolerances are razor thin.

4) Also need to mention I've done the bump stops as outlined in the prior video, but doing that alone doesn't stop the thunk.

I think the upper plastic piece on the 2021 model hatch isn't the exact same as prior years, it seems to have plastic around the screw hole that protrudes up when compared to other pictures I've seen, specifically the washer nestling into the foam around it in a way my washers cannot. Attached is a side-profile pic of my top plastic part. Adding a washer pushes this piece down too far and creates a gap for wind to intrude, creating the whistling. Foam compresses enough to be thinner than the washer, but thick enough to force the plastic pieces together/no thunk.

Maybe this will be helpful to others trying to fix this. IMO this problem shouldn't exist, but it's really my only complaint thus far with the car.

I am having the exact same problem on my 2020 GT2. I have brought it to the dealer 3 times now with 3 unsuccessful repair attempts. I was elated to hear others had experienced the same issues and already developed a solution. I am bringing the car into the dealer today (it only has 3k miles) and will ask them to perform this fix. Thanks again for all the input; I certainly appreciate it.

This fix has worked for me.
I've incorporated the suggestions of other members here.
Thanks to you all.

Applied a similar fix to my dads Cerato GT that had been back to the dealer 3-4 times. It works!!

He could not be happier with how quiet it is.

I just did this fix with the rubber/foam gaskets. I doubled them up because the stuff I bought from the craft store was quite thin. Worked like a charm. I hope it lasts.

I tried the washers and they didn't work for some unknown reason. Maybe too thick because the trunk didn't fit flush anymore and when it opened it would do so with a "pop" like it was being forced open.

Each car seems to have a slightly different issue with the hatch. There is another thread on here where a guy put additional weather strip around the edge of the hatch. That seemed like a good idea so I bought some and installed it. But when my trunk got about 95% closed it would beep and go back up. So obviously too tight for my trunk. Maybe he had a manual hatch I don't remember. I tried to push mine down when it was almost closed but then it would "pop" open and I bet thats not good for the latch.

Anyway this fix worked on mine. Seems like it takes a bit of experimentation to find the right fix for a particular car. Good luck to everyone!

I used some thin weatherstripping all the way around the hatch, and I have the auto trunk. Mine works fine. What an improvement. I didn't even realize the hatch was bumping around, but the car in general feels quieter and smoother now. I had already done the washers on the bumpers.

More evidence that each hatch seems to fit a bit differently. I'm glad it worked out for you.

On a side note I also discovered that one of the bolts that holds the deckled/spoiler on was missing. I replaced it and tightened the other one but I'm wondering if this had anything to do with the rattle? If you have the blocks off I'd check those bolts too.

What kind and where did you get the weatherstripping from? Ive tried the washers and the kia fix to no avail. Stupid thing is still making the noise. Its driving me nuts. Also where did you apply the stripping exactly? If you could please shoot me over some pics in a private message. Thanks a bunch.

There's 4 or 5 threads on the topic that can probably be merged but not sure how the admin would handle such a thing and present all the various tips/tricks presented...

The one you want is here: Another rattle hatch repair.

I just got some 2mm Silicone Rubber sheet and made gasket / spacers by tracing and punching some holes and fitted them without any washers at all and it worked perfectly. No more clunk. Took 20 mins total and since there's no washers, there's no chance of metal to metal contact ( which could promote wear and rust ).

Cost me $8 for a sheet of Silicone Rubber ( and I have heaps left over :) )

I've tried all the fixes in here but still had the rattle. Just figured mine out, it was the back seat latch. Had the seats down to carry some wood and realized I didn't hear the rattle anymore. So I wrapped the latch with electrical tape and now it's gone.

I tried the washers, tape on the hatch latch, felt on the pads, adjusted the round hatch feet, I even put adhesive felt under some of the plastic around the hatch.

I had a very slight rattle coming from the hatch. I bought some 2mm silicone rubber tape and put one piece over the screws on the bump stop as the video shows. Interestingly, my car did not come with washers after removing the bump stops ('23 MY). After installing them back into the hatch the rattle is gone. I think using this method added just enough pressure with the hatch being closed to prevent any movement and sound. Hopefully this fix continues.

This may seem over engineered but for anyone with a 3D printer, this it's a 20 minute solution (and solves that itch to make something!). We can't get the US TSB Kit (thick foam pad, 4 washers) in the UK so I made a 3D model that lifts the guide bumpers slightly. Much more written in my reddit post and also in the thingiverse link:

So if you have a 3D printer and don't fancy a trip to a US Kia dealership or a pair of trips to the art store and hardware store....try this...
Can't post links...

My cost would be about 30p, maybe slightly more if you want it in PETG for some heat resistance. Shipping will be far more. I'm okay with people out there helping each other in local stinger clubs and not making money off it. So I'll put this out there. I did the same with the snorkel intake design. That guy gets a cup of coffee.

Thanks to you all.

It only takes one stainless steel washer under each bolt and screw it back on and it'll never rattled again.
