Fix for rear hatch rattle (video)

This fix has worked for me.
I've incorporated the suggestions of other members here.
Thanks to you all.

Nice job !

Just did this (with rubber m8 washers).

I’ll try hitting some bumps/potholes to see if the clunk remains shortly.

Why didn't you use black zip ties?? I joke. Very good job and this is how I learn real deal stuff from a real deal owner on our real deal forum.

SteveS ... bravo! I tried your fix and it looks like it may have worked!

I couldn't find an M8 rubber washer (only the metal ones), so I ended up with something called a "lamp washer", which is the same diameter for all intents and purposes. Pulled the stops and inserted the washers and re-tightened. I drove around for 15 minutes, trying to find all the pavement breaks and bumps that triggered the "clunk in the trunk" as I call it.

Couldn't make it clunk. Yee-HA! :)

What amazes me is that such a thin washer makes such a difference. The tolerances must be really close.

By the way, I had an appointment with the dealer to get it fixed there, and was told they might need the car for 3-4 hours; that there are at least 3 things that might be causing it - the latch mechanism itself, the aforementioned bumpers and something else, and they'd just have to try things and test drive and test something else if that didn't get it.

Problem fixed now just need to close the trunk herder but I could leave with that. Thanks again

Had my Stinger at the dealership last week for the wire harness recall and the trunk rattle was also on my car's recall list. Instead of letting the dealership do the rattle fix, I just bought the fux kit for 7 bucks. Didn't install it cause my trunk doesn't rattle ... yet:D. Threw it in my Stinger drawer for possible future use.

I like the additional bumper wrap fix!!!

I did this same thing for mine and two friends stingers a few months back. Best fix ever.

I'm not sure if my hatch had the "fix" preinstalled before delivery but mine does not rattle. It did make a metallic clack over hard bumps when the bump stops were threaded too far out. The one thing I noticed is that the lower side bumper is rubber or rubberized and I see indents in it from the upper hatch plastic bumper. Hopefully this is "normal wear" and wont result on a rattle later.

I tested the threaded bump stops before doing the washer fix, by applying a thin film of grease to the rubber and shutting the hatch. The grease transferred to the "landing spots" on the body of the car, so I knew they were making firm contact. No need to screw them out if they're already doing their job.

Worked like a charm on the trunk thunk.

Tried same, M8 rubber washer, as nhcowboy28, I used one thickness, 2 each side total of 4. I have 2019 GT.
Ran over same bumps that gave me the clunk cheap sound and nothing, hit them over and over at different speeds, could not be happier with 2 buck 5 minute fix of some that drove me nuts.
Thank u all for figuring this simple fix out

I only put in the neoprene gasket, no washers, and it seems to have worked. Mine was very spotty to begin with and only when cold. Hopefully someone from Kia has actually read this thread. We KNOW you are out there.......somewhere.

I have the 2020 model do you think Kia have modified that part or will they use the spacer kit i have removed mine and there are no washers, have no rattles just a buffeting sound:mad:

My 2021, with less than 600 miles just developed the trunk thunk. How has the fix worked for everyone? Still good? Do I just use the washers in that parts pack posted above?

Wow, this problem still exists and we are in the fourth model year for this car. Maybe it’s time that KIA finally fixes this issue already; a problem that has plagued my 2020.

It happens when I drive over speed bumps. Comes from the right rear, sounds like a metal on hard plastic or metal thunk.

I went to my dealer and got the kit. Cost was $1.50CDN. I'll fix mine myself
