3.3TT DIY intakes w/Heat shielding drop about 0.2sec off 0-60

I would but I prefer blue filters, but I'm thinking about in. Why are you selling?
How you all like the spectre filters?
They worked just as well as any aftermarket intake. I switched to AEM because my wife purchased it for me as a gift. Cant really notice any difference between the two.

Finished off the heat shields with edging. Job done now.

Nice little guide. I do want to offer some feedback though.

I had the spectre diy intake for a good year now. Its a decent DIY mod. Doing it does open up SOME turbo spool sound. But the lower corrugated tubing does stop and prevent alot of the sound.
The metal frames on the filters have always been too hot to hold after driving the car. Turbo spool can only be heard at higher boosts, and not so much at lower boosting.

Today, I swapped to an actual intake. KN typhoon intakes. This removes the corrugated rubber tubing.
Im not gonna speak on performance, but the turb spooling sound is much much more prominent than before. If it was based off just sound alone, I would have definitely done this swap earlier! Turbos can Be heard spooling up at a much lower level now. Definitely happy with getting actual intakes installed now.

So I went the route many did in the thread with the diy intake setup. I love the look and it sounds great. It’s the first mod I’ve ever done so of course it can’t go smoothly. I’m noticing if I go WOT and let off, the car still feels like the throttle is still going. Stays around 4k rpm and slowly drops until about 5 seconds or so and then it drops down to the normal rpm and doesn’t sound like I’m still accelerating. Anyone know what I’m talking about or had the same issue?

Looks good. Congrats! Not sure of the throttle response. Mine doesn’t do that! Maybe take out your new intake setup and do an run or two without them and see if it’s doing it, then put the, back in and see if it returns?? No idea why the throttle stays on with you off the gas - makes no sense?

Yeah I'm confused by it also - but that's not a bad idea. I'll give that a try tomorrow hopefully and report back. Thanks for the suggestion.

So I recently went to a few car meets and got the tuner itch again. I threw on my homemade CAI(cool air intake;))system with heat shielding, but before I did I ran another stock 0-60 test to get a good baseline. I know video editing is not the most accurate measurement, but I’ve run consistent stock 4.8sec 0-60s using this method. I do my best to crop at the same frame for each run and was even a little conservative on the DIY intake run of 4.6sec. I’m amazed on the improvement just intakes made and can’t wait to add exhaust and see what that does next.:D See below for pics of intakes and video tests.

One of my earlier stock 4.8 runs.
The 4.8 confirmation run the day before intake swap.
The 4.6 run with DIY CAIs!
A 4.7 run with DIY CAIs and Autohold launch. Little slower off the line but still faster than stock.

Gotta say it again..Love this car more and more everyday!

cut the factory snorkel box out completely

It’s actually not difficult. Just takes some patience and a few basic tools. After a little practice I can switch out everything for both intakes in about an hour.:D

I can try to make a simple step by step guide later if that would help.

Thanks again for the compliments and let me know if you have any more questions.

cut the factory snorkel out. you will be able to look straight through the grill and see the air filter.
when moving,,, colder air will be stuff in there and waiting to be inhaled

it makes the world of a difference, i sawzall the snorkel out. even with the factory air box it works.
you have to take the bumper off to understand what’s going on and where the air is being sucked in at. its sooooooo restricted

Just installed this today. Super excited. Wanted to install with some k&n filters but the flange size difference with the heat shields caused me to just settle with the spectres. All in all super excited to take these out and about. I did notice a bit of noise when I first started the car which caused me some concern but hoping that is normal.

Looks great! I get the same ‘loud intake sound’ when I first start my car, only does it when cold / first start, and as soon as I start driving it stops. Sounds pretty cool actually! If I let the car idle it only occurs for about a 30 sec or so.

Okay good to hear, I notice it for about the same time. Guessing that is the turbos spooling? Sounds like a vacuum kind of.
