Convince Me To Keep My Stinger GT1

As far as the having back aches, maybe you haven’t adjusted the seats correctly.

I have a partially herniated disk in my lower back, and have not experienced any discomfort, fwiw. Also found the dealer had pumped the tire pressure way up.

Good luck!

Listen to the wife...you'll want to keep her. The cars come and go. If you love her, don't trade her in...trade the car in.

All in all, I would use Turo to rent the cars you are looking at for a day or two and see how you like them. It's also a great chance to be alone in the cars and also see how the materials hold up (seat, steering wheel, etc).

I'll agree with you on the long road trips. I'm 5'10 and had to scoot the seat up one inch, or so for my passenger in the rear. After about 5 hours they fell asleep and I inched the seat back slowly. Once comfortable the seat jolted and they woke up. Asked if I could move the seat forward. "Crap..." I said.

With 4 people and a boot packed to the brim the Stinger does get cramped in all areas. Even for me, and I'm small. It's a big car, but you can overload it quickly.

The Genesis G70 shares the same mechanical platform, but tuned differently and higher level of luxury. You could also consider the Genesis G80 Sport - same engine, but even more luxury. Good luck.
The G70 is stiffer

I can't think of any suspension mods available that are going to help your situation but I do have one possible solution assuming it isn't the seats that are causing your wife's back issues. Are you currently riding on the 19" wheels with Pilot Sport tires? If so I would recommend downsizing your wheels to 18" and researching a comfortable tire option. If you're not really interested in that I think you're probably out of luck.

Funny this thread came up today because on my way into work this morning I was driving in comfort mode and was thinking to myself that the Stinger is a pretty stiff riding rig, doesn't bother me that much can I can see some older owners getting fed up with it over time.

I have heard the Cadenza is a darn comfy ride too. Not like the K900, but very comfy and much cheaper (and better looking, though not close to as good looking as the Stinger)

I will agree! I have a 2017 cadenza and it’s way more comfy than the stinger... more features, more luxurious, bigger , cheaper, and I actually enjoy driving it. Although it’s a bit slower ....

I'll also put in my two cents for checking out a smaller 18" wheel and a tire with a taller side wall. The extra cushion could help with the ride feel which is why most family cars are set up that way.

As for the seats and back pain, first try more seat adjustments, but perhaps check out some seat cushions. There are some with massage functions that could be helpful.

Came from Lexus GS-F Sport (not GSF). Stinger's power and acceleration is amazing.... but not the ride comfort or the vibration/noise. Lexus cabin just feels more refined, and well insulated from the noise, vibration from the road and engine. At least imo, the difference in the different drive modes comfort/sport/sport+ in the lexus made a more drastic difference in in ride handling and suspension. In the Stinger, I feel it more in the acceleration and transmission mapping points between the different modes.

Interesting....Have you tried test driving a GT2? One of the differences between the GT1 and GT2 is the adjustable suspension. Maybe give that a shot and see if you feel the difference.
Also changing wheels to a 18" will also help the ride quality.

"Adjustable suspension"? Never heard of that on a Stinger. "Electronically controlled/monitored suspension", yes: but the GT1 and GT2 both have it. As far as I know their suspensions are identical.

What is not identical between the GT1 and GT2 are the front seats. The GT1 has 12-way positioning for the driver and 8-way positioning for the passenger. The GT2 has 16-way positioning for the driver and 12-way positioning for the passenger. In other words, if the OP's wife likes how the driver's seat feels, then she needs the 12-way seat, not the 8.

True, got confused. I stand corrected, and sorry for not using the correct terminology.

I need to go back read the catalog again that Merlin has very well memorized by now.

That would be really cool, if I were a walking Stinger manual. :p:D Alas, not remotely the case, or ever will it be.

Everyone has their own preferences and perceptions. You should find something you love. Personally, I've had a much more pleasant/opposite experience than you. I've put 22K miles on my GT2 since May. This includes a 55mi. daily r/t commute as a dd, but also a 1/2 dozen weekend/vacation/getaway trips of 800mi+ including a 1700mi week-long road-trip in October. These trips have made me appreciate the Stinger even more. And both my wife and I, logging many miles as driver and passenger, have remarked how pleasant this vehicle on those trips. The seats are great. I don't squirm/shift in the seat even after hours in the saddle, and don't feel as tired at the end of a long day behind the wheel. As a passenger, same. Add in the "long legs" on the freeway, all the tech, the sound system, and cargo space... this is an excellent 'gran turismo'. As to the 'hardness' of the ride, yes it's stiffer than a family sedan, but not harsh at-all in average road conditions. My $.02.

I find the stinger quite comfortable but I’m also on winter tires right now and usually leave the car in smart mode...

Try playing with your lumbar support for the lower back pain

Also tell the wife how it is ... don’t let her nag too much ... ain’t like they know about cars .. lol ... keep the stinger if you like it!

2 things I can think of, the tire pressure is probably too high and you might want to get some tires that aren’t as stiff as the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (i’m Assuming this is what you have on the car). My Stinger’s ride isn’t harsh since I changed the tires to some Nitto Motivo’s, now they aren’t the best in inclement weather and my sliding off the road proved to me Saturday night but, as a 3 season tire, they are certainly some of the most comfortable I and others here, have ever driven on. I’ve been up to NY with the Nittos and if you have been up there, you know they have some crappy roads however, those tires make the car feel the best so far.

As far as the having back aches, maybe you haven’t adjusted the seats correctly. I say this as the first few weeks, I was trying to adjust mine similar to how I would in the Optima. It wasn’t until after a car wash and my wife saved her setting in my position that I had to drive in that new position from the wash and then slightly tune it that I finally got it right. I zeroed out everything (found the lumbar was set forward too much) and started fresh. Ended up tuning it on a long road trip and then I found the right position. You could just go to a dealer to try a GT2 to see if it any different but I would also remind you to check the tire pressure as they tend to over inflate them, up to 50 psi, make sure it is set to 38/36 (F/R) for the 19” setup. Not sure what the 18’s are but you can check the plaque at the door for that info. Keep us posted.

Oh yeah, you might want to also look at the 2019 K900 if Comfort is your thing. It has the same engine, is a lot more luxurious, rides softer but is a tad slower and has a few more creature comforts. Just a thought.

If I were to get a replacement for the Stinger, it would be something that's sport-oriented so the K900 would be out of the list. But anyhow, interesting take on the tires contributing. I thought that tires affected road noise and grip but not so much as comfort and harshness of ride but I guess the thin rubber would explain that fact. I do have the MPS4 tires which came standard. Maybe after this I'll switch over to Michellin A/S 3.

My tire PSI is around 36-38 all around as I haven't adjusted them for the winter. But I'll try adjusting the seats more. I wish I had bought the GT2 so it has the thigh extender and the passenger gets the lumbar support.

My wife and I took a 7 hour trip and we felt great when we got out of the car. To me, the seats are incredibly comfy and the ride is incredibly smooth. Then again, my wife and I are in our forties (I can only say that about myself for 7+ months).

Like the poster before me, I'd suggest the K900 for you and your wife though.

No to K900 but I'll definitely try adjusting the seats a little bit more.

Very car on that list aren’t going to be any better then the Stinger. You should test drive them but, I think you might be looking for a family car or SUV.

I'm gonna test drive the cars on the list that I mentioned but other than that I'll probably adjust the seats and see what works out for me. Replacing this car is the last resort though.

The Genesis G70 shares the same mechanical platform, but tuned differently and higher level of luxury. You could also consider the Genesis G80 Sport - same engine, but even more luxury. Good luck.

For some reason I've never been in love with the G70. Stinger all the way lol.

I have a partially herniated disk in my lower back, and have not experienced any discomfort, fwiw. Also found the dealer had pumped the tire pressure way up.

Good luck!

I'm 26 but I've fell from a flight of stairs and landed on my back and it hasn't been the same since so my back is very sensitive. When I first got the Stinger, I noticed that the first two months within owning it that the tire PSI's were at 50 and I reduced it to 38 even.

Listen to the wife...you'll want to keep her. The cars come and go. If you love her, don't trade her in...trade the car in.

Luckily I've never had to have many people ride on the Stinger. To this day, there has only been about a dozen times where the backseat have been utilized for carrying people and those are for very short trips (think bringing nieces to malls and all that lol)

The G70 is stiffer

G70 is arguably less sexy than the Stinger, if I'm being very honest and subjective.

I am on the MPS4 tires and it just occurred to me that might be the contributing factor to all this. But I'm going to have my wife adjust the seats a little more to see if it would help. I'm 26 and I'm embarrassed to have posted this thread, honestly. I sound lame lol.

I have heard the Cadenza is a darn comfy ride too. Not like the K900, but very comfy and much cheaper (and better looking, though not close to as good looking as the Stinger)

These are out of the question though, they absolutely don't appeal to me at all. Thank you for the input though. Always appreciated.

I'll go ahead and have her try the seat adjustments. Maybe she's putting the seat WAY too high and too 'straight up'.

Stinger is best compared to a Muscle car IMO. Its just a rocket from hell lol. I always love using launch control from a red light and looking at the small cars in my rearview mirror. :)

I'll try the GT2 just for curiosity sake. Who knows? Maybe I have a bad suspension LOL.

G80 would do well for your requirements.

Never interested in Genesis honestly.

I WISH I gotten an GT2 so I can have the full seat adjustments available. I honestly do. Small things like the thigh extension and the bolstering adjustments mean a lot (at least they do in my 440i lol). I do 40 miles commute daily and I've put about 9000 miles in my 6 months of owning it and while I love how it drives it just that sometimes it feels a little unbearable on longer trips. But AGAIN maybe its how I adjusted the seats that's the problem.

I never use the Audio because I like hearing the throaty acceleration sound in sport mode, lol. Maybe that's just me. But I'll try it though.

And I always thought that my Stinger suspension was way soft, and rolling too much....

And I always thought that its weird I'm posting this..because its weird..

I find the stinger quite comfortable but I’m also on winter tires right now and usually leave the car in smart mode...

I told her to play with the seat adjustments and we'll see how that works out.

did you check your tire's pressure?

Yes there about 36-38 all around. In different places lol. I forgot to adjustment since winter.

GT2 is certainly the way to roll with the Stinger. The small touches and features complete the car. It should only come in GT2 in my opinion.

That leg extension is a great feature and certainly helps with seat comfort. I loved them in my old BMW's with Sport Packages and was really happy they have them in the Stinger. Believe it or not, the tires play a part of the suspension system and the Pilot Sports are fairly hard tires. If you want comfort you will have to give up some sport. I find Pirelli tires to offer a nice balance of comfort and sporty feel, if you plan to stay with summer tires, you can try their P-Zero tire.
