3.3TT BMS Stinger Intake System

So recently received my BMS intakes and installed them on Thursday. Install is straightforward, and just followed the instructions on their site. I did neglect to tape off the intake tubes while assembling, so the coating did get scratched, however, the radiator brace covers them up.

Overall impressions for me.. I like the increase in throttle response, it's pretty evident as soon as your driving around. I can tell there is a bit more response on load in the lower RPM's as well. For the power increase, can't tell really. They supposedly add some, 20 I think from dyno charts, but the butt dyno can't pick it up really.

However, they might be getting removed. Being a GT car, my DD, and a family hauler; the added sounds from turbo spool and blow off are fun to hear, but think they might get old quick. It is interesting though to hear the bleed off as your accelerating, and the slight dump of boost when letting off. But, just driving around yesterday running errands, it was a bit noticeable.

I won't return them, as I might want to see how well they perform in the cooler months and see if I can notice the power there. I will also be reaching out to a buddy of mine that is a fabricator. Maybe can add on to the intakes a bit to keep the better flow, but seal it a bit more for sound reduction.

If anything I might sell and just wait for any other intakes that will allow for better flow, but keep sounds down. Maybe look into purchasing someone else stock intakes and modifying them for conical filters and such.

TL;DR Bought intakes, like the gains, but not the sounds. Will be looking into other options.

Johny Tigs are super nice and not that loud. Before i installed them I thought i may add sound deadening to the metal shielding to keep them more quiet but didn't have to. You can hear them but pretty subtle.

Thanks... I'll take a look. The videos of all the intakes can be deceiving, so hopefully someone close, Houston, can let me hear. Hearing the BMS intakes in person is similar to the vids, but real world and long term impressions are different than on screen.

Part of the reason the factory intake is so restrictive is because it's designed to block the turbo noises. So when you open up flow you're going to get more sound. Most people like the sound anyway. :) But I suppose that is a trade off if you don't.

Totally knew that going in, definitely not my first rodeo. The issue is you don't really know how the sounds are going to be unless you hear them in person. Don't get me wrong, not a knock against BMS, just wanted to share experience.

But I will be keeping them on for a while to see if I can get used to them. The wife factor in this is big as well o_O

Appreciate the feedback.

Wife factor IS huge, yes. I've done midpipes and AEM intakes - and not a word. Odd. Maybe she's starting to like the mods? LOL

What about a high flow panel filter?
Do you all think throttle response and power gains are that much different with a high flow panel vs open filter. Is a open filter recommended with the JB4 stage 2 and exhaust?

I had K&N panels in there before. I could tell a slight different in response, but nothing compared to the BMS.

From looking more at the stock intakes, Terry is right though, the area above the panel and the stock snorkel intake is a large restriction. I'm thinking if the front of the stock intakes could be opened up and a conical be placed inside, it would improve flow and response way more than stock.

hmmm.. maybe I need to hit the classifieds for stock intakes :D

Does the factory setup have a resonator built into it at all (yes all, that's right, I still don't have my bloody Stinger)? I know that on Subaru's, there's a mod called the "resonatorectomy" (or similar) that removes a white resonator (people often call it "the milk bottle" with a volume of roughly a gallon from underneath the stock airbox - that certainly adds a bit of noise to the intake system.

Purchased in 2018 and finally got these bad boys on the car. Slowly starting to equip my new 2019 with every mod ever purchased.

JB4 will be installed on Monday. If a shop is installing the JB4 will he need to purchase/download the App to confirm install is success or can he remote into it with a laptop?

Lastly, has anyone ever compared IAT numbers for this set of intakes? Curious to see how they fare up with stock as theres so much debate on that since release. Love the ease of assembly and layout - very smart design.

PS: Should I be concerned taking my car to the dealership for routine maintenance with these installed or should I swap over to stock before I go?

I would also love to see a comparison of IAT numbers with different CAI systems. There's gotta be tons of usrunning jb4s with different intakes. I'm thinking a comparison of outside temp to IAT at idle, at 50 mph and at WOT?

Same here. I ordered the AEM a few days ago then canceled it. Watched a video on YouTube and just did not like the final look. I love the look of Injen but concerned about not being sealed. BMS is nice just haven't heard much about it. So confused would love to see the IAT numbers on these compared to stock or K&N panels.

I use the BMS CAI , I like it so far and I have almost 18 k on my DD , and it pulls well when I hammer it lol

With JB4 or racechip and catback. Is there a need or gains with intake

It does helps with the exhaust freed up I gained perhaps 5 true hp with CAI add , air goes in air goes out :)

Much like the discussions regarding mid-pipes, if you're only looking at peak power, possibly not a lot.

But if you're looking at over the entire rev range, you may see gains all the way through as a less restrictive intake lets your turbos breathe better.

Good write up. I too am in search of an intake that adds performance without being overly intrusive on the sound front for an economical price point. I was looking at the BMS as an option. In theory, the more "heat-shielding" the quieter it should be.

Can’t speak on behalf of other intakes but doing much research on these forums and experiencing these intakes first hand, they are EXTREMELY non-instrusive on the driving experience and install was a breeze as far as procedural goes. Loosening & tightening hose clamps and screws is where you lose time

Intakes aren’t necessary, but you will significantly hurt your top end HP without them, especially with the extra boost from a chip/tune.

Most intakes add 15-25whp to the whole powerband, and up to 44whp near redline! The first two dynos are with stock exhaust and the last one is with the extra airflow from muffler deletes. Huge drop off in HP near redline without intakes and best “bang for the buck” mod there is for our Stingers.
