2020 Stinger Rumors

The only place I've run into that rumor is here. It would be stupid of Kia to let a rumor like that get out, because all their 2.0L trims would stop selling.

And there is no garantee that Kia will continue building the Stinger in the future if sales are not consistent.

They will. K900 is a confirmation of this. The sold next to zero K900's since they launched in the US. The Stinger has potential for market share, something the K900 in my eyes, never did.

I saw the rumour on some auto magazines in Korea. Hyundai and Kia are confirmed developing a new 2.5T engine. Just not sure it's going into Stinger.

Well awesome! I will definitely buy the next gen Stinger, do you have insider's info about potential 2nd gen stinger being a reality?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

Then why wait? If there is no second gen stinger you might lose the chance unless u buy a used old one by then.

I do not have any insider knowledge. The K900 was a total flop here in the States, they kept it alive and spent millions overhauling dealers, and training people to support the vehicle and it's buyers.

The Stinger will be the same story, sales failure or success. My comment was speculative, based off the companies determination to make a failed luxury vehicle work here in the States

Here is the reference. It's written in Korean.
현대기아차, 신형 세타3 엔진 '전륜·후륜·미드십' 다 만든다
2.5T will replace the current 2.0T engine, and 2.3T is being developed for an mid-engine layout.

If you read carefully it says this is in development and they are not sure which car will carry this engine but likely would be a mid engine sports car which the stinger will never be so you are waiting for the new stinger in vain.

K900 is not a failure they never intended to sell the k900 like hot cakes or like the soul, the k900 is a statement Kia wants to make to the world saying we can make a 7series like car for the fraction of the cost.

My understanding of the K900's staying power is that Kia sells the shit out of then in Asia. They just ship a few over to the U.S. so they can say they're a competitor in our market.

From what I've read, the Stinger's sales in Korea aren't as good as Kia hoped. I think Kia is banking on success in our market to continue the model.

US, AUS/NZ, and a limited number of other markets where vehicles of this size are the norm.

Will the mid cycle refresh likely be the 2021 model?

More likely for the 2022MY (which would be on sale by 2021).

The Theta III 2.5L in both NA and turbo form will replace the Theta II 2.0L - which is ancient (and problematic) across a wide range of H/K models.

Hyundai's Alabama plant already expanded to begin production of the 2.5L mill for FWD application.

The 1st model to get the 2.5T for RWD application will be the next gen Genesis G80 and should make its way down to the G70; so don't see why it wouldn't also make its way to the Stinger.

Also know that the 3.3T will be eventually replaced by the 3.5T and that the 8 spd AT will be replaced by a 10 spd AT.

Some buyers (who can) may wait for the powertrain (and other) upgrades, but most can't or don't want to wait.

The 2.3T is the mill being developed for mid-engine application; rumored to be the engine for a production version of the RM concepts.

Kia did sell 2,524 of them in 2015, and nearly 4k in its first 2 years.

But yeah, not ever going to be a volume seller here; Kia would probably be happy if the K900 sold around 800 this year.

That's cool. But "eventually" isn't like asserting through rumor mills that the 2.0L Stinger is going to be a 2.5L in 2020.

^ The 2.0T will be eventually replaced by the 2.5T, only question is when.

Since the next gen G80 is due to launch this year (in Korea) and thus, 2020 for the US, the Stinger getting the 2.5T for its facelift (likely 2021) seems like then logical time.

The one thing that can put a wrench into the time-table is if Genesis insists that the G70 gets the 2.5T before the Stinger.

That's what I am talking about: to say "2020" would make sales of the MY19 2.0L disappear. I don't think that Kia has said any such thing. Consider how well the MY19 GTs would sell if Kia announced that next year's model is going to switch to the 3.5L. Sales would tank.

In the first paragraph, the article clearly states that the new 2.5T will be equipped with the new G80 as a start and replacing the current 2.0T, not only for RWD but FWD too. The part you mentioned is in reference to a 2.3T specifically for a future mid-engined sport car. Based on the fact that Stinger shares same powertrain with G80, I can see possibility that the next Stinger will come out with the 2.5T.

But Kia has not even confirmed they will continue building the Stinger past this first generation, hopefully they will cuz Im buying it. Hopefully Kia continues perfecting the Stinger over the decades so it becomes a true legend in decades from now. Cheers!

I just wish I knew for sure if they were going to have that 3D cluster available for 2020... I'd totally wait for that.
