Michelin tyre peeling

Hi everyone,
Apologies if there is already a thread discussing this problem but I couldn’t find it. Both front tyres have started to peel away. I’m asking for advice and has this been an issue for anyone else? Michelin Australia have advised this is common for Stingers??? I have only done 38600 kms. Cheers

Do you ever turn the steering wheel while parked / stopped for any reason? (Like when backing into a spot and you “center” the steering when done)

I probably do. I’ve just found a heap of threads relating to my issue. I’m going to be more conscious of my driving habits and see if it happens again when I replace my tyres this weekend. I didn’t realise this could happen!

it is a common problem/byproduct of soft sticky tires.

Agreed, it's common with very soft compound tires, especially in climates like where you live. It does seem to be more of an issue once the tires are more heavily worn. You have nearly 40k kms on your tires which is quite a lot for the Pilot Sport tires so I'm not surprised it's started happening.

38 000k is exceptionally good for the michellin tyres. Generally folk here have been getting 25-35,000.

I have heard about your condition in the forum before i can't remember exactly what the out come was but have a suspicion it was a manufacturing fault. As the pictures you supplied show the edges are ok i don't think its an inflation issue.

That’s not a bid mileage for those tyres. Get them replaced asap though.

I didn’t realise she was from Perth. Yep I reckon it’s the tyres melting on these bloody hot roads.

Thanks everyone, I feel I’m armed with good information now. I’m taking my car in on Friday to Bob Jane Tyres, and Michelin Australia have agreed to pay pro-rata for replacement tyres. So If 50% used they will pay 50% off my new tyres. If the report comes back fault of the tyres then they will replace them. I will let you know how I go. Given our hot summer conditions do I get the same Tyres?

I was only joking about the tyres melting. The hot conditions shouldn’t be a problem. The Michelins are good tyres and are suited to the Stinger. You will need to talk to the tyre fitters to see other alternatives to the Michelins.

Hahaha I did think it a little strange considering north is way hotter than Perth. But thanks for clarification. I panicked a little when I noticed my tyres. Nasscar do you think it’s a fault with the tyres or just the way I’ve been driving it?

Ozstung Michelin Australia are saying it’s a common problem with the Stinger. I’m hearing that as Kia’s prob and not a Michelin faulty tyre issue. I’m taking it to Bob Jane Midland on Friday so they can report to Michelin. So I’ll let you know the outcome

I’m baffled right now and very disappointed with my OEM Michelin tires. I only have 8k miles on them and my left rear tire is literally falling apart.:mad: There are multiple chunks of rubber all over the tire that keeps coming off while driving. Worst part...Kia service won’t replace them...

Tyres don’t usually fall apart like that. If you are cornering hard they will wear quicker on the edges due to the transitioning of the cars weight at speed. But that doesn’t look like normal wear. From the photos I would say it’s a tyre fault. But you have had good mileage on them so if they need replacing at your expense, that wouldn’t be something to lose sleep over.

Mine did that on the rear BAD and the front just starting at 16,000 gentle miles. No turning stopped, no track, no wheelies, highway use. They were rated at 30,000 miles for tread wear and had lots of tread left, so Michelin gave me 49% off 4 new tires and Discount Tire had sale discount, old people discount, etc. so the new set of 4 was $618. I was okay with that. First time I ever had any kind of a problem with a Michelin tire. . . . . .

That's a tyre manufacturing fault for sure and Michelin should foot the bill for a replacement pair / set.

I tortured mine on the race track and they still look perfect ( and actually feel better overall after being tortured ).

If Michelin come to the party, just get the same rubber but if not, the Falken FK510 is a good sports tyre for a good price.
