I presume you have all seen the G70 shooting brake that is destined for Europe, but not the US. One of the biggest reasons I chose the Stinger over other cars was the liftback. Most people don't realize the Singer has so much room in the back in the first place. I wonder if it will end up shining a spotlight on the Stinger in the US since we already have something fairly similar to the G70 Shooting Brake right now?
I've always kind of considered the Stinger sort of a "fastback wagon" since the rear window is so far back. Wish we were getting the G70 wagon, though.
I was more thinking because people want the G70 but we are not getting it, but we already have the stinger. It’s just that people don’t know much about the Stinger.

One of the primary reasons I bought a Stinger is because of the hatchback. I'm coming from a mid sized SUV and while I don't really need quite that level of space any longer, I still need access and the ability to load some stuff in.
I'm not a fan of estate's or shooting brakes or station wagons (or whatever you call them) from a style perspective but a fastback car with a hatch is better looking and equally functional.
This is the first I hear about the G70 shooting brake and I can tell you I've heard almost zero news about Genesis coming to Europe. The whole concept is very very up scale. They talk about individual purchasing assistants and studios only in Munich, Zurich and London... waaay more upscale than your average bmw or mercedes.
My opinion is that Genesis made a huge mistake with its logo. It's way way to close to the Bentley logo (which everyone knows) and I think people will be ashamed to drive it. Simply because genesis has zero brand recognition in Europe and everyone will asume it's just some Chinese knock off. So one of the main reasons of buying luxury (brand snobbishness) is out the window.
The second reason of paying more would be what you get for the money. And to compete with the german trio is near damn impossible, as even the British manufacturers (who are all about brand & luxury) have found out.
Even though I really like the G70 shooting brake, unless it's about the same price as the Stinger, I would not buy one. If it's in the 330i / 340i territory, I'd go with the bmw.
And even if it's as much as the Stinger... with that logo... I don't know. Perhaps I'd stick a hyundai or kia badge on it and feel better.
I would have actually preferred a stinger wagon or suv. The sportback loses functionality in favor of looks, it's form over function. Better than a sedan but less useful than a wagon, hatch, or suv. I came from a subaru STI hatch where the utility was not compromised. But americans hate hatchbacks and love sedans, so subaru killed off all the turbo wagons.
Me too! I was very close to getting a TLX but my bike would not fit in the back. I have had the Stinger for a few weeks and it has already been useful to get stuff in it. The shooting brake would be better, but only marginally, and not work the difference in looks (IMHO).
Shooting Brake won't move the needle for the Stinger at all imo. The Stinger has been around for a while now. People have had time to see that it exists. Some people are never gonna consider the Stinger just b/c of the badge.
The Stinger seems to intrigue a large amount of young adults. Unfortunately it is priced out the budget for many people in their 20s. But maybe by the time this shortage is winding down, 18s will be in the buying range of the average 20-25 year old.
I'm sure this has been said 1,663 times on this forum that the Stinger is great for the price if you don't care about the badge on the hood. We were in California wine country a few weeks back and had lots of people doing double-takes with the Kia. That was funny to me since they were more intrigued by it than the dozens of Porsches, BMWs, etc.
I think the Kia badge is better than a fake-ass bentley/aston martin badge. It's honest and unpretentious.
At least in Europe, the Stinger does not compete (in terms of price) with premium brands but with the likes of VW Arteon or Ford Mustang. A Giulia, 4 series or A5 would be at least 10-15K more expensive for the same options & power.
i don't care about the badge or i wouldn't have bought a stinger.
but this thread is about being hopeful that the stinger will become more popular in the US.
as long as the stinger is associated with the kia badge, it won't be. it will forever remain an enthusiast niche car.
people might do double-takes with the kia stinger, but it won't lead most of them to buy one. they'll go "hey that's neat", then go off and lease a bmw.
if you look at the sales figures, it appears that the kia k5 is eating into stinger sales. it's likely that potential stinger buyers are being swayed by the k5.
@usagi I agree with you about the irrelevance of the G70 to the Stinger sales. I still think it's good for the overall brand strategy of Kia that they have the Stinger under their brand. They'll never compete with bmw in the US or EU (don't think that's their strategy) but they are now taken much more seriously in comparisons against vw, ford, toyota, honda etc.
@Transmetal I think it used to mean a sporty estate with 2 doors (coupe-estate). More recently, Mercedes brought it back with the CLS Shooting Brake witch was a 4 door sporty estate for people who thought the e-klass estate was boring.
I personally love the concept . Right now, my favourite is the VW Arteon Shooting Brake.
Two things. First. I didn’t mean to imply that the Stonger is a shooting Brake. It isn’t. But instead that since people seem to be hot on the G70’s shooting brake, coupled with the fact that we are not getting getting it in the US makes me wonder if people get “have you looked at the Stinger?” It’s the closest thing.
Second, I’m concerned the Stinger will go away. I worry that the 22 refresh is just a bit of final lipstick and that it will go another year or two and disappear. Some publicity from this could avoid that.
I was more thinking because people want the G70 but we are not getting it, but we already have the stinger. It’s just that people don’t know much about the Stinger.
Liftbacks are a niche bodystyle and usually far less than their 4-door counterparts, with the exception of the Stinger continually outselling the G70 (in part due to the G70's cramped rear).
If anything, the Stinger is probably better known than the G70.
