Wheel Sizing

Another part of my mid life crisis might be buying new wheels for my car. The stock ones are a PITA to keep clean. I think I may stay with the same size 18". I live in NY and we have pot holes that will swallow your car, last car I had was a Maxima with 19" Italia Inox wheels and I think 3 out of the 4 were bent. Thinking black wheels, but can you mess with back spacing or anything or just keep it stock? Wider tires would look good though.
