3.3TT What's the truth about downpipe/midpipe performance?

I know this is an old post but I have mbrp and am looking into mid pipes if it gives better sound.
Did the mid pipe get you better sound and some more burbles on decel or did you do mid and cat back at the same time?
Definitely deeper tone and louder.

I went from stock exhaust to ARK downpipe and MBRP catback a month ago and it's now really loud, with lots of "burbles" on deceleration, especially when you're driving slowly, like to find a parkin spot, or when you're about to stop at a red light. Very audible. Pretty sure it's there to when decelerating at hih speed, but there is so much engine noise that I do not really hear it form my cabin, compared to when it's quieter.

I did momo rf5-cs that were over $2k.
I had the catback on first so no reliable data. I did make 10 hp more than other stock stingers untuned on the same dyno but like the big mid pipe claims on a stock car they raise boost and that gain goes away when boost is cranked up in a tune. But logic would say less restriction is good and replacing the catback helps. So at minimum replace catback or mids but don't expect big gains.

Has anyone considered just hollowing out the cats in the secondary downpipes? Seems like this would just as easily remove the restriction.

Yes.

The stock pipes are still a squished oval and have a few extra bends and nooks. The aftermarket pipes are pretty.

Choice is the spice of life, no?

Now that you say that I do remember then when I was looking at my secondaries a few days ago. It looks like someone from Kia took a hammer and beat the hell out of both pipes right before the cats. At first I thought I had run over something then I realized it is the crappy design. Still though I'm leaning towards hollowing mine out because I'm not sure if I want $500 worth of pretty spice that I have to get under the car to look at. My main concern is the restriction. I'm 99% sure my cats look like this from octane booster (MMT) contamination.

Wrong! There is a nasty pinch point in the stock setup.

The secondaries aren't much restriction. The primary downpipes bottleneck more than anything else in the exhaust path post-turbine. If you want to save some money and have time (and patience) to punch out palladium and platinum...go for it.

I did the same thing on my 89' 300ZX turbo. And you're right is wasn't a 5 minute process hollowing out that cat. The 300ZX only had 1 cat and the Stinger has 4!!! As for the 2 primary cats I'm thinking about going with the NGT catless downpipes. After seeing the MMT contamination from using octane boosters I think I would be better off being completely catless. This is for off road use only of course lol.

Hey guys, I've been off the forums for quite some time since I got my JB4 tune working well. Now I've got the itch for more upgrades.

I started researching exhausts and midpipes and I'm finding completely conflicting posts with no proof about whether or not midpipes and catback exhausts make any difference if you already have a JB4.

Some say you'll shave .2 seconds off your 0-60, others say your car will sound better, but you won't see performance gains.

After over two hours of scouring the threads for every post with either "midpipe" or "downpipe" in it, I can't find a definitive answer. Does anyone have any personal experience with results before and after adding a catback or midpipe on a tuned Stinger?

I've got a JB4 and intakes so far and I'm looking for the next logical upgrade. If a midpipe can really shave even .1 seconds off, then I'll go with that. Otherwise, I might upgrade the intercooler or get lighter wheels (still on stock 19s).

If it helps, I care much more about 0-30 times than 30-60 times. I've seen that some of the faster 0-60 time cars are actually a little slower 0-30 and make up for it from 30-60. Basically, if a midpipe would drop my 0-30 times and only give me gains on the top end, I'd rather keep my faster 0-30 setup.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this for me!

From my own experience it's cheaper to go to your local Muffler performance Shop and have them do a muffler delete. Also unless you live in a very very hot location I recommend doing a CPI than changing out the intercooler. It's an easier job to do and if you are using ethanol blend E30 and up you'll get about 15% temperature reduction in your charge pipe.

Whatever you change will create some sort of drone...

I have down pipes with factory secondaries and stock bi-modal...

I tried over $4000 worth of exh and hated every modification.

It has probably cost me 50hp having a restrictive factory cat back but it was essential to stop my turbos smoking especially on E30, but the sound in the turbos is still there , cold start is epic and I have NO drone at hwy speeds at all...

Part throttle wooshy wooshy noises with the airboxes and dump pipes combined, is a real winner for me.
