What is this pinhole light in the ceiling for?

It's always on, and I can't figure out what it's supposed to be. It's not bright enough to illuminate anything in the dark, and it's not in the manual, so I'm stumped.

It actually is bright enough to illuminate the shifter area. It’s not intended to be as bright as the dome lights just give enough light to be able to see the shifter. Go to a dark area and cover it up, you’ll see it does work.

These are pretty common on cars now. The ones on GTIs/GLIs are red.

I had the same on a BMW. Do not look like much but it's more mood lighting than anything.

By Honda had one also in blue. It will illuminate the console in very dark conditions.

The light there do help to illuminate the centre console and especially useful when you open up the center arm rest when it is totally dark. You will find a very soft white glow in dark areas.
