Has any one experienced this?
It doesn't happen always, but happens sometimes..
it happens when I take a ramp to highway and try to hit highway speed (70mph) before the ramp ends when I'm in Sport mode and shifting with the paddle shifters.
It is always 5th or 6th gear that won't shift to the next gear, and the rev goes crazy high hitting the red line
I have to release the gas and it will shift maybe 2 seconds later.

That's exactly how sports mode is programmed.
Holds lower gear to allow sharper throttle response

Lol.. this thread.

I said it doesn't let me shift to different gear with paddle shifter.
of course sport mode holds longer and revs higher then shifts to next gear compared to normal mode if you are in full auto mode

Are you trying to shift from 6th to 7th?

What speed are you going when this occurs?

What are the RPM's you are shifting from?

I had it stuck at 5th,6th gears.
I try to shift around 4000~5000rpm
when it fails to shift and because I have my feet on gas, it will go to red line.
I would have to release the gas and it eventually shifts..
I guess no one else had this issue

Speaking for only myself, correct. Never had anything like that.

Paddle shifting has always worked for me 100% of the time.

Car has 42k KMS so far

I occasionally have this issue so you are not alone. Consistently gets stuck in 4th under hard acceleration when paddle shifting. Some software issue withe the paddle logic I presume.

Does the same issue occur in other modes?
I read somewhere that sports mode will not engage 7/8th gear?

For me I very seldom use sports mode as I find it way too agressive. I like the sharp throttle response in sport - but the way it holds the gears and revs excessively is not my liking.

When in sport and in automatic mode, it wont shift to 8th under normal highway speeds which is just a tuning thing. If you get going fast enough it will get to 8th. You can also override this with the paddles at any time. I cant say it doesnt happen in other modes because when I am driving like this i am likely already in sport. That said it only happens when I am in drive and trying to override the gear selection with the paddles. It doesn't seem to happen when I have it in manual shift. So I think it's a conflict between the automatic programming and the manual when it happens.

Then shift sooner:)

OP is describing a WOT run where once in 5th or 6th gear, the paddles will not command the next gear up without letting off the accelerator. Not normal Sport mode behavior of holding gears/different shift points.

This is assuredly not normal, gears should not hang if you're hitting the paddle to shift up. Do you have any modifications, particularly a tune/piggyback of some sort?

I have zero modification to my car. I think this is SW problem like NismoDPB said.
I wish Kia didn't use in-house transmission. Kia should have used ZF transmission, it would had added maybe $1k to MSRP of the vehicle but performance would have been amaging.

I believe such measures were implemented to preserve the reliability of the transmission.
However I cannot find much to fault with it - the shifts are crisp, smooth and fast. And in general I don't notice it.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the ZF 8 speed has had its fair share of problems.

I too have noticed this recently. It doesn’t even need to be under WOT. Sometimes mine won’t shift out of 5th gear under acceleration and it takes it a good 5 seconds before it responds to any shift commands. Even after letting off of the throttle.

What does your dealer say about this?

For the folks having this not-upshifting issue, what year is your car? I wonder if it's some faulty TCM programming thinking it's seeing an over-torque condition or something. I have never experienced it in my 2019, but I also rarely shift manually using the paddles (maybe 5% of the time).

I haven't made a trip to dealership yet, but my biggest fear right now is that they will simply say 'it was not reproducible' after making time and effort to go to the Kia dealership.
I've been making repeated trips to dealership for my sunroof rattle problem and all they say was 'it was not reproducible', but I hear it as soon as I drove off their lot.
I have a feeling this one is going to be a tough one to diagnose.
I am trying to videotape this issue, but this car is playing with me, it never happens when I have camera on

BTW, I'm from Langley, I really wanna go back to greater vancouver area and drive my Stinger there. so much nice roads like Cypress mountain and sea to sky. all i do here in Michigan is avoiding potholes in straight roads.

Mine is also 2019 and it is GT2.

Yup, This always happens to me at my favorite highway ramp which I take right after coming off from work to home.
and It wasn't even under WOT like you said, I only accelerate aggressively until hitting safe highway speed.
I freaked out when this happened for the first time, but now I stay calm and ease the gas paddle and start counting how long it takes lol

I've had that happen when trying to paddle shift during a period of higher load, a very few times at most. But based on that it is why I've not used paddles on the track at all. Please keep us updated once you get some feedback.
