First, credit & my thanks go to Clearly Canadian for first bringing up this topic in the "Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)" thread.

I've only had my Stinger for a week and already have been the bozo driving down the road for over a mile with the turn signal flashing, while enjoying the excellent Harmon Kardon sound system. Where I like the steering wheel positioned, the wheel obscures the turn signal lights on the console panel.

Some may say this is purely a cosmetic issue, but I have also learned that the Lane Keeping Assist system is designed to be disabled when the turn signal is not centered.

I'm not an auto engineer, but it seems to me that the HUD could be enhanced via software upgrade to include turn signal indicators when it's on the left/right position, solving this issue for those of us with HUD. For those without HUD, there may be another elegant solution.

So, I'm thinking if enough of us are troubled by this, and we put in multiple requests with Kia, a future software release will include turn signal indicators in the HUD.

don't take this the wrong way, but are you that distracted while driving that you don't notice your turn signal on and need it to be shown in the HUD? HUD was developed from the F1 cars, so unless you have found the american equivalent to the autobahn, which i would love by the way, the HUD is just a toy. thats just me, and if i have offended you, i apologize, but was just wondering.

Probably because I've been riding motorcycles most of my life - which typically don't have self-cancelling signals - I'm in the habit of checking and turning off when I've completed a turn. I love the momentary signal operation on modern cars.

As to showing in the HUD, I think it's a reasonable thing to expect. With so much being handled by computers, it would be nice if they gave you a little more flexibility over what appears where on the various displays.

good point. i guess i am old enough to remember driving a car with no turn signals and non cancelling signals. nice one elfguy, thanks!

I'm 54... best I recall all my cars had turn signals.
Maybe I wasn't clear in my OP. The issue is that the placement of the turn signals is hidden behind the steering wheel when I adjust the position where it is comfortable and doesn't block my view out the windshield.

"The HUD is just a toy" - I feel differently, and this is my first auto with HUD. The Audi A6 I just turned back was the first auto I had to have blind spot detection, but only in the side view mirrors. My wife drives a Q7 with same. The blind spot detection in the HUD is one of my most favorite features on the Stinger, a huge improvement over the Audis. As an aside, when I looked at BMW, the saleman tried to convince me that BSD is useless - well maybe the way BMW implements it, but not the way Kia delivers BSD.

Blondi,, can only imagine what my grampa drove for his first car. I watch many car shows. Very intresting,

BSD: "Bull Shit Detector". That's what I saw in my mind an instant before reading. ;)

My turn signals are not entirely hidden behind the steering wheel. A little lean to left or right with my head slightly down and I can see the one I am using right now. Tiny adjustment of the wheel position and the seat might even make this unnecessary. But I like where my seat and wheel are positioned, like the OP. So I adjust myself momentarily if I want to check the turn signal flash.

BS Detector (your version ) LOL!!!

Not sure where you are located, but in Los Angeles BSD is a life saver. We seem to be invaded by Uber & Lyft drivers who break every "rule of the road" I learned in Driver's Ed when I turned 16 and got my license.

Matter of fact when I was test driving the GT2, on the 405 Fwy on-ramp as I was merging into traffic, the BSD gave the sound warning as another car sped past me on my left side.

It also occurs to me that maybe an optional turn signal could be added to the upper corners of the LCD display in the center of the console. This could be turned on/off via the menu settings. Then HUD wouldn't be required, but I'd still like it in the HUD as my vision is mostly forward.

I might have to adopt your "little lean" approach, but I'm not in the habit of doing that (yet) whereas I am in the habit of mostly looking forward and occasionally looking at center console.

I don't see the problem here. If we did not have BSD we would be turning our head left and back to see if there was a car there. We would also be looking at the mirror. BSD tells us if there is a car we can't see using the mirror. Sounds like a good setup to me since most Stings do not have HUD but if they did, would be a good place to also include BSD. I would not purchase or lease a car without BSD or RVC. But, you can keep Lane Departure stuff.

Sheeeze, @Weareblondi, I've got almost two decades on you, but I don't remember a car without turn signals anywhere outside a museum! I'm really curious about what you were driving. [BTW, Buick offered self-cancelling signals in 1940--certainly before our times!]

About a week after Clearly Canadian's first entry about the turn signal indicator placement, I commented that my first in the wild sighting was driving for over a mile on the freeway with the left signal on. OK, still had paper plates, not used to the car yet, probably enjoying the new sound system—and I did the same thing a couple of times during my first hundred-or-so miles with the car. But still, this is just important enough that it should be in an easily visible location when the wheel is adjusted to a comfortable position, and it doesn't seem to be for most of us. I'm probably remembering wrong, but it seems to me that turn signals were on the HUD in my Pontiac (I know they were in Buicks and Cads), and they certainly were clearly visible on the dash no matter how I adjusted the wheel. So this, for some of us at least, is an unwelcome thing to adjust to.

Since I've had HUD since 1997, I absolutely don't consider it a toy. I unfortunately wear trifocals, so it takes that all-important extra fraction of a second to adjust when looking away from the windshield.

Most new cars HUD show a lot of info, I think only GM HUDs has the signals. If your into coding, I seen someone on the tube code the turn signals into his BMW HUD.

I had this issue from the start, as well. I've gone through 3 iterations of wheel and seat setup since I've owned it trying to get the turn signals visible, the dead pedal comfortable, and maximizing the rear-view mirror field of view. I desperately wish the turn signal would show up on the HUD. My only suggestion is to keep working with adjustments on your wheel and your seat for now. We need to bring this up with Kia's Concierge line, as well.

Great idea! The Stinger dedicated line, right?

Yeah.

Yep people used to run in front of my car with a flag I’m that old! Lol

Next years model has the HUD indicator warning and a Macdonalds direction finder too!
The point I’m getting at is that this is the first edition of the car and these changes may happen on the next. If you want all this extra stuff the price will increase greatly. This is a drivers car with a reasonable amount of tech that is still in development, love it for what it does, puts a smile on your face! Crickey the car does not even a have an audible speed warning in its GPS!

Stop, all of you! You're making me feel totally geriatric! No one younger than me (that's a lot of you) is allowed to brag about how old they are!
But while I'm 99% thrilled with my Stinger, there's nothing wrong with us pointing out needed future improvements here, especially when they are simple design flaws like indicator placement, since it's our duty to improve the world (and Stingers) for those who come after us. :) Remember, Kia is reportedly reading us.

Exactly that’s what the forums for because Kia does read our comments. Sorry the humour was not directed at you. I’m tall and have the steering wheel raised up but i dont have any issues with seeing the indicator lights.

I took no offense—just being cranky today. I'm tall (but only for a woman), and for some reason haven't been able to find a seat and steering wheel combo that allows me to see the indicator with my hands at 3 and 9 without stressing my shoulders on a long drive. Grrr.

That said, after 6 months with this car, I still looooove it! Near perfection!

Eljay (et al)

The last thing I want to do is make you or anyone else feel geriatric ;-)
The cars I(we) grew up with were 100% hardware... whereas cars today have a lot of software that can, and often is, upgraded, especially with a brand new car like our Stingers. I'm working under the assumption that during the 3 years on my lease (and probably sooner) Kia will put out a software release, and if enough of us send them feedback, Kia might implement software changes that makes us happy/happier, which is a big driver for repeat business.

A big reason I even looked at Kia is that Audi simply pretends that problems with their vehicles do not exist, in spite of numerous reports of those problems.

I really appreciate all the posts.... I think the next step is to determine how best to communicate our request for a fix/solution to Kia. I'm new here... and I don't assume that Kia is actively monitoring every single thread here. I think the next step is to reach out to them.

As the old adage goes... Squeaky wheel gets the grease!
