Turbo Fail

You never mentioned how you're driving the car when it goes into limp mode.

Also, is the oil completely up to temperature?
Sorry about that!! Yes oil is up to temp as it’s about 30 min into my drive home from work. Then I hit the expressway and punch it. Same every day but only happened twice

Sadly I don't think this matters. I drove an hour and a half both ways, to/from my brothers house on Christmas Eve (when it was REALLY damn cold) and within about 15 minutes away from getting back home it happened to me. Everything was definitely up to temp.

Edit: when I say I don't think it matters, yes I do believe you should allow everything to come up to temp before pushing the car. But from what I've seen, it can happen pretty much any time.

So what you can do then is punch it, have it throw the error and drive to the dealership so they can see the code, record it, and take it from there.

That’s exactly what I did and now they have the code. So I’m dropping it off Tuesday for them to try and figure it out, which they probably won’t!! Hope I’m wrong!! I guess we’ll see. I will post what they say!

I hope they do, because the overboost issue has absolutely plagued the 3.3TT for the '22 model year, at the very least. The only way I was able to get to totally stop was to get a tuned ECU. Even the JB4 wouldn't totally solve the problem. It was obnoxious.
This is something that Kia definitely needs to address. It's honestly something that appears to be so prolific that a recall should probably be issued over it.

I agree, there should be a recall!

These cars are putting around 12psi max boost? If so how much overboost and how frequent would the car go into limp mode?

I think it's actually probably around 14 PSI max or so. I'm not even going to try and figure out Kia's ridiculously conservative tuning and the criteria required to set an overboost condition. There are certain environmental and driving conditions that seem to affect it, but that's about all we know, it appears.

Mine went into over-boost twice under full power, and both times it was about 15 degrees out.

As a result, when it's in the teens, I am more careful with the throttle, and haven't had an episode since.

KIA should certainly fix it - I suspect they can do it with a software update.

2022+ are known to wind up going into overboost condition, especially in cold weather. When it happens it doesn't trigger a check engine light. The only way to know is to hook up a proper code reader to the OBDII port. When it happens to me it comes up as a "Pending code". My guess is if it happens during multiple drive cycles it eventually trips a code. Problem is it doesn't seem to happen often enough to trip a code. It's happened to me about 2 or 3 times so far since winter set in. For me, it usually seems to happen when the car is producing full boost and changing from either 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th.

I'd say if we bugged Kia to do something about it, they just might actually take it seriously. But then again, it's Kia and they seem to have an excuse for everything.
-18 today on my drive home my temp would not rise while on the highway and pushing it, while in boost and switching gears turbos completely stopped providing boost. Drove it home still without any boost and tried turning it on and off but still nothing, in your situation did you have to take it to the dealer each time it happened?

I haven't brought mine to the dealer yet due to the issue. Honestly I should but like others I have a feeling if Kia doesn't see a CEL or able to pull an actual code they'll just tell me they can't do anything. One of these days I'll have to purposely cause the overboost condition over and over so it finally trips the CEL. I really think it has something to do with how they have the 22+ tuned considering it only really happens when it's cold, and only seems to happen while shifting. I'm guessing it's not properly handling boost during a shift.

No, just turned it off and restarted it again. All is good when I do that, until it happens again! Then just do the same thing all over

I just put my cold air intake on (K&N) no jb4 no spark plugs yet, and was running all fine up until the low temps today, after I got home let it sit for a while and is now back to normal but when I give it boost my oil temps start to drop. Just gonna take it easy it until I can better address the issue better and it’s warmer out. Mine is a also 22

This is an old Car Scanner Pro screenshot from when I overboosted a while ago. The overboost code is P0234, the ECU logs the code but it won't throw a CEL.

So I overboosted again this morning during some spirited driving on country backroads. Getting my used Lap3 ECU reflashed is on the back burner at the moment while I handle other priorities. I'm tired of running into overboost issues when it's cold outside.

Can now confirm if you allow it to overboost on two drive cycles in a row the CEL does come on. Tried to purposely do it today. Sure enough during the second drive the CEL comes on. Both times the overboost occurred shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Interestingly enough, when the CEL comes on, even if you cycle the power after, if you put the car in sport, it'll drive like you're in comfort. Don't want to bother with it right now so I cleared the code. Got too much to do this week to add bringing my car to the dealership and having to deal with them.

update: my car is at the dealer today for this issue. They are replacing the pressure boost sensor as they think it’s that. We will see later today. I will post an update as to what happens.
