Trade in Value

Hey all,
So for the heck of it I was looking into trading in my 2022 GT2 AWD scorpion and was really disappointed in the trade in value. I thought for sure with my low apr when I bought it brand new that I would never acquire negative equity. I went to 4 different dealerships and they were all about the same 36k-38k. Kia actually was lowest believe it or not. Carmax was mid and toyota (2 different dealerships) was the highest. Man, I was disappointed on the value dropping so much for being a great car. Even my car only having 17500 miles on it. What have you guys experienced?
Any interest in selling to me?

I am in the market for a low mileage GT1 or GT2, preferably 2022. However, other than a branded title, could not find one below $37k. I am willing to fly out anywhere in the USA to get one.

I have a 2023 GT2 AWD for sale on Autotrader. 5,190 miles and an extended CPO warranty, perfect carfax, excellent condition. It's in Michigan

Ended up buying a 2019 GT2 with 10,083 miles for $30,897 out the door. The price was far lower than others with low mileage.

Has anyone traded in a 2018-2020 Stinger GT2 AWD with between 30k-50k miles? How much did you get for it. I have a 2019 GT2 AWD with 31,400 miles. I'd like to think i can get 28k from a dealer as a trade-in for it. Is that unreasonable?

Ima looking at the 28 current listings on KSL Cars, priced starting at $15,000, all years and trims, mileage 30K to 200K, and a '19 GT2 with 58,000 miles is asking $28K. What did the seller buy the car for, that's the question? I think that your seeking trade in price looks possible. New and Used Cars For Sale | KSL Cars

You can probably sell it for 28 yourself. I doubt dealer would give you that much.

There has to be at least $10,000 in it between the trade in price and what the dealer can sell it for.

A reputable dealer has a premises, lease, loan, rates, reception, service, sales, warehouse, stock, taxes and finally, a margin that you don't have. It can also sit there for 3 months or 6 months and attracts interest on those business expenses for the dealership. The dealership has to provide a roadworthy car and more than the "minimum", usually a windscreen needs to be replaced and tyres. Brake pads and any other item, frayed seat belts, torn carpet etc.

If the car is not suitable to go on that dealer's lot then it gets moved down the chain, through a wholesale auction and into a yard. Everyone wants their cut before it gets sold to the next owner.

The dealer sale price falls away immediately you drive it away from the dealer because all the overheads come off. This is now your car's true value.

This explains why your new car drops $10,000 as you drive it away from the showroom. This explains why the overheads must go back on when the dealer wants to sell it again. The trade in price has to be much less.

No kidding.
Just out of curiosity, I did one of those on-line 'value your trade in' calculator things.
I did a couple of different sites (CarGurus, AutoTrader), as well as my Kia dealer site.
My Stinger is a 2023 GT Elite (Canada). Top of the line 3.3 AWD. It is a garage queen, and only has 2,200 miles on it. I've never even driven it in the rain.
I've done a fair number of cosmetic mods on it as some of you may have seen in my posts.
The valuations varied from $34,000 to $37,000. That is absolute criminal.
I paid MSRP at the time, which was $53,500 last year. I didn't purchase any other add-ons and managed to get free window tint at the time.
I've seen similar cars to mine with higher mileage listed close to $50,000. One 2023 Tribute edition was listed at close to $60,000.

Just as a comparison, I sold my 2017 Mazda 6 earlier this year. Only had 42,000 kms on it (26,000 miles in 6 years).
I took it to my Mazda dealer as they offer "great cash deals"... and they offered $13,000 for it. They later upped it to $14,000. Comparable retail listings varied from $21,000 to $24,000. Unreal. I sold it to a Nissan dealer for $18,600.

I understand wanting to keep your car in good shape, preserve its value, not go snow/salt drifting with it, etc. But 2200 miles sounds almost like you're storing it for the next owner!

Those poor turbos are begging to be let out to breathe...

I like these sellers. It let me lowball the shid out of them. On the other hand, when I sell the car, it's very obvious, it's been used. So I don't expect a lot. But I never look at the car as an investment.

I sold an Australian Ford Falcon 6 cyl sedan I had owned since new. It was not dissimilar size to the bog awful Ford Taurus the states inflicted on us in right hand drive but it was Australian built and a lot better everything.
I looked at the same cars fore sale in the local Ford Dealership, took $7000 off their price and parked it front of their used car lot on a Sunday when they were closed. When I came back later there were fingerprints all over it.

A guy rang me and asked if he could come look tomorrow. I said yes expecting him to come and bargain down the price. He turned up with a Bank Cheque for the amount I had on the window.

I bought a car privately for a relative that was advertised as a deceased estate. Formerly driven by an elderly retired Doctor. It was a 3 year old Toyota Yaris with 3000kms. It was brand new inside and out. They were asking $15,000. I said look. That's a dealer price and you won't sell it. I said how much did a dealer offer and they said $7,000. I said in three months you will have dropped it to $10,000, it will have three months less rego. I said I will offer you $9,000 now.......I drove away with it and insured it agreed value for $15,000..........

I think the moral of this story is you can never get a dealer price. You can sell a car privately for a couple of thousand more than the trade in price.

For reference, on 12/16/2024 i sold my 2019 GT2 AWD with 31,400 miles to the dealer on i bought my new EV from for $22k. The car was very clean. No damage inside the interior. I always had a blanket down on the rear seats and very rarely did anyone sit back there except for our dog. I also have a truck and usually the dog is driven around in that. I just did an oil change and tire rotation on the car a few hundred miles earlier. The new Continental DSW tires only had 7,500 miles on them. Last i checked brake pads had plenty of life as I replaced them with aftermarket 20k miles earlier.

I have a 2020Gt Ltd that a bought just as they were opening back upfrom COVID shutdown. Got mine for $43k before tax. Drive it all year round. Undercoated, PPF protected and ceramic coated. Has just over 80K on it and I get emails from the dealer offering 28-30K

I am interesting in selling/trading in my stinger. Its a fantastic car, but not great for having multiple car seats/baby carriers in the back. Lots of room, but it sits way too low. Need to get a family suv (lame).

I have a 2019 Stinger GT AWD. It has 28K miles, no accidents, aftermarket Eibach lowering springs, TSW rims, 245s DSWs. Beyond that, stock. Carmax offered me $26K. I bought it in the middle of winter for mid $30s, like $10k below market value. The dealer (koons manassas) was basically throwing them away.

$26K no bs when the suv I want will cost at most $38-43K sounds pretty good. I remember several years ago selling my 350z and I had morons from all over the earth reaching out to me then bailing.

Unless I can get $30K private sale within the next few weeks, any reason why I shouldn't accept carmax offer?

^^Check out carvana and vroom too, might get better price than carmax.

vroom:
"We announced on January 22, 2024 that Vroom has halted all purchases and sales of used vehicles. It has been an honor to serve car buyers and sellers all over the country."

Caravana:
$21,600

CARMAX looking good

I have a 2019 GT AWD with 28000 miles. The mileage and years are the same, just not quite good as trim but still the V6. I am looking at the Hyundia Tucson Hybrid and they are willing to give me $23,400. Being that your identical but somewhat better car get $22K, I would say dealers are being consistent.

Now weather or not these are good offers is another thing. As has been posted previously, its very easy to see what cars are being listed for but impossible to know what they are selling for.

Unless there's some major changes in kia/hyundai dealership service experiences, I highly doubt any future vehicle will be one of these. The current product offerings (IMO) are mediocre at best. Sadly I have minimal confidence for a vehicle assembled/built in the states.
