Thoughts on extended warranty

I didn't get it on the sign. So wait... is it 3 years or 5 years? I thiught it was 5 years + 5 extra years if its extended? Where did the 36 months come from?

An Extended Warranty is like buying rust protection for a car that does not rust. Modern car are zinc plated.

I did purchase an extended warranty once for another car and when it came time to claim I was told my issues were not covered by the extended warranty

I'm not sure if extended warranties are better in the US? They are pretty worthless in Australia. Dealers sell them just to make more money from you.

I am very suspicious of extended warranties. They are obviously no better than the company who issues them, and most often they are not actually dealer/manufacturer companies, but a third party. Often they are allowed to repair your car with used parts from a junkyard, or non OEM parts when new. Clearly these are money makers for the dealer.

These cars are so reliable that easily will go 100,000 miles, my wife Sedona has more than 100,000 no problems at all except that AC needed to be fixed but thats it at a couple hundred bucks, so why do you nee the extended warranty? This ain't some stupid overpriced German or Italian car that you must have warranty.

I also have a stupidly overpriced German car, a 2016 MB SL400 with only a one year warranty because we bought it as a certified car in June. I am not planning on buying an extended warranty because it is a low mileage car that will not be driven more than 10K miles per year and Mercedes builds reliable cars. Life is short at my age, and I can afford some risks or I would have bought something less exquisite for a second car. Our Stinger on the other hand is reliable, practical and drives as well as our Benz plus it has a 10 year warranty. With any luck, both will have been replaced long before either becomes a liability. If an extended warranty is such a good value, how do these companies make money?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
After getting a 10k discount on my car and the finance dude first going into his Gap insurance pitch, I cut him short and said I was not interested. When he got to the extended warranty pitch he first asked me if he should even bother, I said no.

Check with your Insurance company they might offer a reasonable compromise, mine offers an extended warranty, 7 yrs 100k miles on new cars with less than 2k miles for an extra $30 each contract renewal (6 mths), which allows for a $50 windshield replacement, which I have had to do twice in the last 4 yrs with $500 out of pocket for each. I did go with the Geico extended warranty $60 a year cancel anytime. One windshield replacement would cover the extended warranty cost, the other option would have been to lower my deductible for a slightly higher premium the extended warranty seemed like a better bang for my buck.

That actually sounds like a fair deal, especially if you live in places like AZ where my brother complains windshield damage is an everyday occurrence.
