First of all, no this is not clickbait. This 2018 gt2 stinger actually sold on auction for $12k. Anyways here is the price breakdown: auction + Copart fees= 13,258. Shipping 1100. So here it is for 14,358. Resized_20200127_161939.webp I think parts and labor will not cost me more than 12k. The sticker for this one was 50k. I have high hopes for this rebuild.

Best of luck. But I feel you are looking at 12k in parts alone. And a ton of labor.

There is a reason it sold at auction, damage was expensive. However the most expensive items are headlight 1k ish and radar cruise computer 1k ish. Everything else can be had for cheap. All of our 6 cars are salvage, so I kind of know what I am getting into. I could also be totally clueless and spend way more than buying one used. Or I could save a bunch of money since I am doing the labor myself. That risk is what makes projects fun.

A little paintless dent repair should do her up just fine. Best of luck.

I’ve rebuilt a good amount of cars in my life, a GT2 is definitely not one I would tackle due to the complexity of the lane keeping assist, stop-go cruise control, etc and the cost of the parts with the car having such low sales and being so new. I feel like you are definitely going to be into this car at around 30k with a rebuilt title (if it was salvaged). My 30k estimate is more derived from me having a father that owns a salvage yard and having access to wholesale pricing (only $5-$30) off of each part. More power to you restoring the car and I don’t mean to be a hater, but I literally just picked up a clean title, 1 owner, GT2 for $31,500 at 3.1% financing. When you factor in the rarity of parts, cost of parts, and the fact that the dealer is going to have to calibrate much of the different systems, this car is going to piecemeal you to death. And when you are done, you are going to be at a negative equity from day one.

If I can offer any assistance I can and again I’m sorry for being a glass is half empty kind of guy.

Thanks for your input. The repair quote for this car was 26k. I don't see how I can be above that since the shops always overestimate.

My estimate of 30k was including the cost of the car, copart fees, etc.

Anyways, another thought I had about your project. It appears that others have pointed out that this is the pressertech Stinger. You may want to ask around, try to find the original owner, or ask pressertech if anything was upgraded before the tune was done on the car. You are going to want to replace the intercooler and any other subsequent parts with the same parts that were installed when the tune was made (if it was upgraded). The restrictive airflow from the stock intercooler has the potential to throw a tune off.

Also, see if you can get an OEM manual for making body repairs. I’ve noticed a lot of cars in the last 10-15 years requiring special techniques when it comes to pulling or sectioning, as a means to maintain the vehicles safety.

Sorry for being so harsh in my initial comment, I tend to look at things a little differently than most. Good luck in your rebuild, there is nothing more rewarding than your first drive after you get the car completely sorted, detailed, and rebuild inspection completed. And welcome to the community if you haven’t been here long (I haven’t either).

In the end you're still stuck with a rebuilt car. Seems like a really fun project but makes no sense financially (which is why it was on copart and not sent to a body shop).

Heh, mine had less substantial damage than that and I'm not keeping mine once it's fixed. I guess one of those situations where "my loss is your gain." Hopefully this project works out for you.

All our 5 cars are salvage. So far none of them have been a mistake from the financial side. Rebuilt title is only a problem if I want to sell it. I don't want to sell it, I will keep it as long as my hands can grip the steering wheel. Or untill the motor blows.

Fine, but why would once choose to have less liquidity if they had the choice?

I'm pretty sure you can take the car apart to sell the parts, and it would make you a pretty penny...maybe close to twice the amount you paid for it.

I love your attitude and approach to this project. The angst and warnings to consider the resale value are not part of this approach: it's all about the fun of an affordable, even profitable, hobby. You get the car till you drop, if that's your baseline intention. I'm going to enjoy hearing updates.

I think of it as this way: easy come = easy go. If I wanted liquidity I would have invested in stocks (I did). The stinger is not a painting that you buy and out on a wall, hopeing it will sell for a lot someday. At least mine isn't. Idk maybe others keep it untouched hopeing that it will make them rich in 30 years when gas cars are illegal and no one can even drive anywhere. Anyways I could have bought it new, but then I would be hesitant to mod it due to warranty issues and whatnot. Now I am the warranty, and there will be no issues.
Short story: one of our cars, a 20 something Jetta was smashed when we parked it outside. No one was in it, the other driver wasn't looking. Insurance totaled the car. Paid out 9k. We got it for 5k. Now if we bought it used at it's 8k price, we would have lost money. Just my 2cents
