Sunset Yellow Discussion

One thing I'd like to know after all the dust settles is just how many Sunset Yellow Stingers will be left on the road after the buybacks and trade-ins? If we only started with 400 this "Limited Edition" could get quite limited indeed.

THIS is really my only regret for giving it back.

I will try to keep tabs on my VIN to see where, if anywhere, it ends up. Hell, maybe they will repaint it, try to resell it for a deep discount and ill reconsider :)

Cars.com shows less than 20 available right now.

I think Kia will resell the buyback cars, they may need to repaint again if they didn't come out right the 1st time.

I think that too, but it was suggested to me that one option that they are considering is making them corporate and fleet cars.

Well thats one way to bolster sales...bring int he rio for service and get a stinger loaner!!!

On the rare occasions my M3 would go to the BMW dealer, i would always request an "upgrade" and tell them, "you arent going to 'upsale' me into a base 320i when i dropped off an M3!" Often it would work if it was early enough in the day.

Having some stinger loaners would def be a good start. They'd also look really good on the lots. All the times mine has been to dealer so far, it always gets lots of attention from both the customers and advisors.

That would be pretty interesting to see what kind of shape they are in after 12 months of horrid driving by your typical ham-fisted, swerve at anything, 'gas and brake are on-off switches' treatment by your typical 'car gets me A-B' drivers.....especially given that they all have the 3.3 in them.....

Spoke with the dealership today, and Kia inspected my car yesterday and failed it. Nothing major, but several spots that need a finishing touch to be perfect to the Kia inspector. The inspector did make the comment that the color was 100% correct and it was the best one he has seen since the repaint campaign started. Unfortunately, the inspector will not be able to make it back out this week, and I will have an update from the dealership next Tuesday, which is coincidentally the 9 week mark for me being without the car.........

I am happy as hell to hear the inspectors remarks and that everyone who has worked on it has taken it seriously, but still aggravated that Kia didn't just do it this way to begin with, FOR EVERYONE and make it right all around. Most of us had to work our ass off and even hunt for a dealer that wasn't trying to get rich on 1 sale to even GET a yellow.

My guy that did the tint also does ceramic coatings and he has an open spot waiting for me as soon as I get my hands on it.

I find this comment the most concerning given it readily shows that there is not a consistent product being put out.

9 weeks is crazy as well...i am so glad you got the 100% repaint and also glad that nothing major was cause for the failure. Cant wait to see the final pics!

This was my concern from the get go. You will see so many different ways to prep and paint a vehicle. Be careful who you choose.

Your both exactly correct. I got extremely lucky that the body shop called in a PPG rep to finalize prep, and mix all the paint, primer, and clear.

I would've been even more surprised had it not matched since they made the paint to start with lol.

Dude........I'm going through some serious withdrawals, but luckily im over the shakes and fever. If any of the dam Hyundai dealers around here would ever get a G70, I'd go test drive one just to drive something that'll get to 60 without me flooring it for 8+ seconds......:(

I was NOT given a choice...rather i was TOLD it would be done by an "in house" shop and no further details were provided.

Hi All, i updated the main thread but wanted to add here as well.

Found paint issues on both upper rear bumper and inner door jamb this weekend. Both areas NOT covered by re-paint. Just something to keep an eye for if going the repaint route.

A little off topic but I called Valerie today to thank her for some help that she provided to me last week. She and Linda have been my reps during this whole debacle.

Well, Valerie is no longer there. That truly sucks. She was very nice and is one of the reasons I did not flip out (more) and get the buyback. Very pleasant person to deal with.

She'll be missed.

Well........ 9.5 weeks of waiting, and Kia should be out to do the final inspection tomorrow, 09NOV18, and I will be able to pick my car back up. FINALLY!!!!! The dealer called me and asked me to come by and go over the car before Kia got there to see if I could find anything and make sure that it met my approval. All badges have been left off on purpose, as I want to put the black/dark chrome 'Flying K' emblems on that I got several months ago from Sal. Car looks REEEEAAALLLYYY good. No paint lines in the jams, everything MATCHES because everything was painted. We did find a couple of spots to be cleaned and get the buffing compound out of the cracks, but thats it. I cant WAIT to see it in full sunlight, and its supposed to rain here until Saturday, so I will update with pics then in full sunlight. Withdrawal symptoms have come back, but the shakes will be ok until tomorrow.....I CANT WAIT!!!

EDIT: The Kia inspector went by the body shop at 730PM 08NOV18 to do the final inspection.....AND IT WAS APPROVED!!!! I can pick the car up on Friday 09NOV18 after I get off work. WOOHOO!!!

SHE'S BAAAACK!!! Picked her up yesterday after work! Was raining like hell, but bright and sunny today. Left her outside to warm up so I could put the new badges on, which look badass and are the only badges on the car now. Drives as smooth as ever, no rattles, creaks, etc. Only thing to sort are the parking sensors for the rear, but they are going to check the entire system next week. Took mine out of the garage to get a closer look in the sun and thorough inspection. Worse than I thought. Still can't tell the color difference in the pix, just seems like the new paint has a greenish tint compared to the deeper yellow tone of the plastic that wasn't painted. Also noticed several areas that have paint dimples. They also chipped paint when putting bumpers back on. Zoom in on the pix and you can see the terrible paint lines on the door frame and an example of the paint dimples. I have a bunch of pix but these will give you an example of the repaint disaster. You can also see with your eyes (hard to see in pix) that the car was repainted - that orange peel look and sand marks under the paint.

I can see a difference for sure. My dealer told me that some body shops are using a cheap gray primer to repaint the yellow stingers instead of the expensive stuff Kia uses. Perhaps that’s the issue?
