Hi all,

I have a 2018 GT and would like to know something. When the brakes are "cold" (ie. the first 10mins or so of driving), they are VERY grabby. They are smooth feeling, and don't seem to have any pedal feel issues, but they are inconsistent in the way they grab. I can have applied very even brake pressure and the car will slow like normal, then it will seem to just GRAB a bit harder than I feel it should be. Hope that makes sense haha. Once the car warms up this doesn't seem to happen at all, only the first few minutes. Any ideas from the community??

I don't ever feel this, most likely because I coast to a stop with light brake pressure. The current TSB (or rather voluntary service campaign) talks about this: Voluntary service campaign Supplemental Vacuum Pump Recall SC204 (Brake vacuum pump) Might be related to what you are describing. Watch for the brake warning light: if it stays lit, get in there. Otherwise, "If it ain't broke, don't mess with it". And don't borrow trouble: nothing in a cold car works properly.

Hmm that is a very interesting read! Thankfully there is no brake light or anything that has come up. I would also say I don't really do any hard breaking, just a sort of casual style breaking because I definitely do NOT drive hard driving around the neighborhood. Car has 27,000 miles in case that might be helpful if people are thinking it is something else. This is not a huge deal at all btw, just something I have noticed.

Does it have the stock pads on it?

Glad I am not the only one trying to fight this issue. At low speeds (going to 0mph) the car definitely brakes itself several times coming to a complete stop.

The original rotors on my car were machined due to pad deposits from previous owner, and I had new Stoptech pads put on. While this helped the issue massively, the car still does feel off at low speed braking. Currently I think it is actually the transmission downshifting and causing some engine braking. If you are able to, activate the paddle shifters and brake (without using paddles to downshift). I see the lurches happening as the car downshifts an usually with the 2nd and 3rd gears. The issue is not consistent and seems to not happen much, if at all, when the car has warmed up.

Only way I have found to completely avoid the problem is to brake late and then it feels smooth the whole time. But passengers tend to complain about it haha

I put posi quiets on the car and braking is fantastic. Comes down to pad material, brembos are brembos

To answer the question above, I am actually not sure if they are the stock pads or rotors. I do know that they have a good amount of life on the pads and the rotors look relatively new. But like I said, the car has 27000 miles, so who knows what that means lol. Also Andrey what you are describing is ABSOLUTELY what I have too! Almost like the car decides to brake itself sometimes! Changing pads is a pretty easy fix so I might just go and get some good high quality ones and have the rotors smoothed over and see how that goes. Thanks for all the input though!!

Just do look at the possibility of the transmission downshifting causing your braking. When I get a chance I'm going to the dealership to have them do an "Adaptives Reset" which seems to have worked for others in the forums.

One way to see if it's the brakes or the transmission causing the issue is to find an empty parking lot, get up to speed, switch into neutral and then brake with your pedal. If the car does the weird grabbing still, then you know it's the brakes. But if the issue goes away, it's probably the transmission downshifting and being too rough.

Still trying to get my braking to feel as good as the accelerating.

Isn't there a setting for coasting / not coasting (engine braking)? Which drive mode are you usually in? I think for ECO/Comfort, it's in "coasting" mode (no engine braking). For sport, it's in "no coasting" (engine braking) mode, IIRC.

Not sure, haven't really had a chance to play with that many settings since I have had the car for about 4 months. However, I typically drive in just comfort mode when this issue is happening anyway.

Sounds interesting...I have a MY20 Stinger which when I drive and brake in normal traffic condition seems fine but if I'm driving a little bit harder (as we all do in our Stingers) I find the brakes very rough lumpy and gritty ...is this an inferior pad problem or my disks are stuffed..? any thoughts.
Cheers..

"Gritty" sounds like "normal operation for high performance Brembo brakes" (words to that effect in the manual); usually accompanied with noise. If you can brake easy and not feel shudder, your rotors are fine.

Coasting is only available for ECO mode, and only until your tap your brakes then it will continue to compression break until you blip the throttle.

coasting works in Smart mode too, iirc.

Regardless, yeah the factory pads are a bit grabby when cold but not too bad in my case.

Ok so update on what I’m experiencing! After reading all the comments I went and did a test yesterday and today after the car had been sitting overnight and absolutely cold. Upon hitting the first stop sign (where I normally experience the issue) I “coasted” to it in neutral. The issue disappeared! Did it again at the next stop sign. Same result. So it seems less a brake issue and more a kick down issue from second to first gears. Or not so much an “issue”, just more of a design flaw maybe. Either way not sure much can be done about that, maybe a reset of some sort like mentioned. But it’s good to have an answer!
