In Sport Mode, after I hit the paddle shifters I want the transmission to shift only when I hit the paddle shifters with two exceptions: 1) upshift at redline. 2) shift to first when the vehicle stops. Thanks. It sounds like a great car.

having driven a couple of demo cars i can report that when in sport mode , the trans will hang on to the currant gear for some time before it decides to revert to D mode, then , upon clicking of "down" it will go to one gear lower than where it was before it timed out and went to D . Its not a true manual mode but it is quite practical for fast twisties. I have also since heard that when in sport mode , and , after a launch mode start , it wil hang on for a very long time in a manually selected gear.

Thanks, Jeff. I don't know it's good news, though. If I choose to enter manual mode, I want to have to choose to leave it. I'd rather have a true manual mode than what's available in sport mode, never mind the modified manual mode I proposed.

BTW, I guess we can figure out what engine you prefer by your name.

A true manual mode car should not shift when it hits redline, in the twisties or especially when on a track the last thing you want is the car to upshift when you don't expect it to. An upshift mid corner when unexpected can give a sudden power surge and cause it to slide etc etc. Same when drifting, it just makes it more difficult etc etc.

What annoys me is that the G70 has true manual mode but the Stinger doesn't.

Possibly something a TCU tune or something equivalent to the VW VAG-COM software can change.

Possible, I just have this gut feeling that this is something they will change and they will include a True Manual Mode maybe for next year or the after, but my worry is that they will not update the already sold stingers to have this feature in order to give the new cars the edge to help sales.

Welcome aboard, @jeff3.3! Thank you for signing up! :)

Yes, this will most likely be something a TCU tune can change. If the feature is offered in a later year Stinger - like the mid-cycle refresh - it's unlikely they'll take in older Stingers without the feature and add it.

The G70 does need features to stand apart from the Stinger but I THINK those feature SHOULD be on the luxury end, leaving the performance extras for the Stinger...

A true manual mode would be far better than what's offered now.

The problem is that something bad happens as you blow through redline: an upshift, the electronic nanny kills the power, or the engine blows up.

This is by far my biggest disappointment of the stinger. A car that is built and marketed like this one should give me a full manual mode. My optima gives me that!! I would be ok with it shifting at redline but it seems like to me even that is unnecessary. I had a 84 rx7 with a stick shift, it had no limiter or nanny of any kind and I still managed to drive the crap out of that thing without blowing any thing up.

A rev-limiter is there to save the engine, in many cases when on the track or drifting you want to keep the car at the rev limit rather than have it upshift.

Having it upshift when not expected also makes racing it just more confusing and difficult.

Not that I'm arguing against a pure manual mode but on the road I normally hit rev limiter because I failed to shift in a timely manner while accelerating rapidly. I don't need a shift light; I need somebody yelling in my ear, "Shift, Idiot!" Holding constant RPM in a corner, I'd rather be a gear lower so I wouldn't be shifting right as I start my drive out of the corner. I can see where you'd want to hold it at redline while drifting, though.

What about Custom Mode? Are we going to be able to adjust parameters so that we could create our own Manual Mode?

On the topic of the paddle shifters, but slightly different note:

I personally hoped they would be more significant than what they are now.

What do you mean by significant? Appearance or functionality? Oh and welcome aboard! Thank you for signing up. (I don't think I welcomed you yet. :p)

Thanks for the welcoming - I hope you don't burn yourself out doing this because there will probably a large bump in members as the car gets more widely known.

So the paddle shifts almost hides behind the wheel but I think if they were 25~50% bigger I think it would have been better in the appearance and accessibility (I use those hand positions like 20% of the time)

You're very welcome! And I look forward to getting many more members now that the Stinger is available in both Canada and America. The Australians took over early on but we're starting to play catch-up right now. :p

Okay, I see what you mean. That might make for a good topic of discussion. I wonder if more people would prefer them to be larger and more obvious or small and out of sight. I've never used paddle shifters before so I'm on the fence. :D

Honestly, I'm not the biggest paddle shifter fan .. but since the shifter is only up/down it would be more convenient and faster to use the paddle

Whether I would use those paddles over shifters probably varies on how drained I would be in traffic vs spirited driving with the shifter to feel more akin to a real MT

Understood and it makes sense to me! I hear they work well in some cars but not all...

You can pick up some aftermarket aluminum paddle shifters for not a crazy amount of money..

Here are some for the Optima. They might work for stinger by default, if not I'm sure they either already have some for the stinger or will soon.

Yeah, so I figured I wouldn't be using the paddles during the break in period, but 2 things:

1) You almost have to if you want to keep the RPMs somewhere north of 2,000. The manual says it should vary between 2-4k during break in, but in auto mode, it won't go anywhere near 4k in normal driving conditions (daily commutes, shopping, etc.).

2) I use them constantly to slow down the engine for stopping. Whether I'm playing and shifting up and down manually, or whether I'm driving in auto, but coming to a stop, I'm pretty much always shifting it down to take some of the load off the breaks.

So I'm using them pretty constantly now, love them, and I think they're a pretty good size. I am glad there are alternatives though, just in case I wear them out..
