The rear fog lights are SUPER bright. Even on 30 year old cars. Under normal conditions they blind you if you drive behind some idiot that forgets to turn them off.I've never had an issue seeing a car ahead if they had their lights on, and personally I wish the tails came on with the DRLs especially for those idiots out there that forget to turn on their lights in inclimate weather or night time.
You're only supposed to turn them on when you can't see the taillights of the car in front of you. And usually that never happens in a city. I'd say they are useful about 2-3 days a year.
Most cars also used to have optional front fog lights (projectors) but these were slowly phased out once xenon and then led lights came. These were never mandatory.
