Reason is if some one needs a car right now, they are forced to buy used. New cars can be ever so slightly cheaper than an almost brand new used car because you have to wait months for it.
I was pretty lucky as well. Was shopping around in December and wanted the RWD in blue. One local dealer had it (turned out to be almost the only new RWD in blue along a large portion of the east coast). Told the dealer I really wanted it in red and was willing to wait for an order to be fulfilled so they knocked the price down since the car was sitting on the lot for a few months and it was winter so there weren't a lot of people looking for a RWD performance car.
