I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2018 Premium. I've read all about not being able to lock the transmission in manual mode - BUT I think this only applies to the GT2 with the electronic shifter.

Can someone with a Premium confirm that, when the shifter is slid left into the manual gate from D, that the transmission won't shift without a driver's paddle or shifter input?

Thanks!

I think all cars with AT these days shift gear on their own in manual mode if you doing something wrong, to prevent transmission or engine damage. Stinger is no exception, no matter electronic shifter or another is in there. User Manual describes that.

So, I agree with that generally. There are few things that I'd expect the transmission to always do, like drop to 1st at a stop, upshift at redline or not allow you to select an inappropriate gear.

I'm asking about keeping the gearbox in manual mode indefinitely, and not putting you back into regular D after a period of time. Can anyone in a non-GT2 please confirm the Stinger allows this?

I've got the GT with the manual gating shifter, and an embarrassing accident that hopefully helps:

I was getting ready for a quarter mile run, and pulled the shifter to the left so I could warm up the tires in first. Forgot to put it back, so when I launched, I bounced off of the rev limiter in first for a good second or so before I realized what was wrong.

Don't know how long I could have stayed there, but it never shifted into second.

As for the concerns about the car shifting from manual to auto mode with the other shifter, I can confirm that if the handle is slid over, the car will never go back into 'auto'.

It won't go into D by itself if you put it in manual mode by moving the shifter over to the left. In that mode it won't up shift by itself (the rev limiter kicks in and the rpms bounce) but it will downshift. Also on the dyno 1:1 gearing is 5th gear, if you punch it too fast all the way to the floor it will downshift, so you have finesse it to give it as much as you can without it downshifting.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
That is scary: It will downshift when in manual mode if you floor it?? Or, did you mean that happens only in 5th gear?

Crap, I knew there would be something wrong with this transmission.

I think he means if your in top gear and then you stop at lights or become stuck in slow moving traffic it will select the lower gears and not labour in top gear.

@BlaydeX15 I did the exact same thing. Dang! It redlined in manual mode in first gear during Launch, and the RPMs dropped of their own accord. I didn't look to see if it shifted up for me. Apparently it did not: some nanny program to prevent me from blowing my engine kicked in and automatically lowered the RPMs instead(?). I didn't do THAT again!

OP, as far as I know, you are correct: only the GT2 has drive by wire; all other trims have manual gate. I plunk my shifter into manual gate often, especially when I am on the front "row" at a traffic light. :P

If you're in 5th say on a dyno and stomp it it will downshift to 4th. Happened to me today on the dyno
