Sorry, I'm clueless about Australian rules. Didn't even know, you have to pay THAT kind of money for a plates. It's like $40 here.

Yeah but in Queensland you own them outright, in Nsw and Vic you only rent them apparently... someone will correct me tho'

I actually find that rego number to be pretty cheesy and cringey to begin with. I wouldn't buy it for a dollar to be honest.

I saw this post and indeed did some checking and the post is accurate, It costs $3,500 for a custom plate in Queensland Australia.

In Victoria and Melbourne now Australia's largest city, the cost of a custom plate is $600.............

In New South Wales. it costs $350, then they charge RENT of $499 per annum.

WTF?

So you own the plate for life?

If so, that's not too bad then. Here in PRIL it costs $151USD/yr for a standard random plate. Over the course of say 40 years that's over $6K USD. The tags here used to be $78USD/yr or even cheaper years ago. They've increased (like everything else) over time.

$3500AUD is ~ $2350USD so you're coming out ahead.

Uhm No. Registration and Insurance per annum is in addition to the plate combination price or rent custom or standard.

In Queensland and Victoria you own the combination until you relinquish it and you can sell it for its increased value to anyone else. For example "Porsche" would probably sell for $500,000. The registration is then transferred to that vehicle.

In NSW you only rent the combination from the Roads Dept but you can negotiate with someone else for a price and they can take over the rent so that's how you would sell the combination.

In no state do you ever own the plates. The plates custom or standard belongs to the state.

A standard plate in Victoria with the next issued combination is $41.

All states then charge registration and insurance on top so it is about $850 per annum in Victoria, $750 in Queensland and NSW.

Over 40 years the total cost would be

Queensland $33,500
Victoria $34,600
NSW $50, 350

So I think your $6K looks pretty good.

Ummm no...

Queensland $3500 for Prestige 7 letter plates and i own them for ever, rego is rego you cannot get away from paying it, but i can sell personal plates for a profit if possible or a loss probably and the next person only pays a $90 transfer fee into their name.

I have a few sets but this design was by far my stupidest idea, once you purchase the plate it doesn't matter if you put it on a vehicle or not.

I have some hanging on my wall i will one day sell at a loss no doubt....

Follow me for more financial advice!

Nope

From your own Qld Govt website transport registration number plate

It states as follows............

""It is important to note that any number plate issued to a vehicle, that includes personalised or customised plates, remains the property of the State of Queensland and must be surrendered to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, if required.

For personalised and customised plates, it is the number plate combination that is the property of the person to whom the plate is issued, not the physical number plate.""

That shut you up.

There is something called Dunning Kruger Effect.

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias whereby people with low ability, expertise, or experience regarding a type of task or area of knowledge tend to overestimate their ability or knowledge..
