New Corvette

Can anyone tell me why Australians will be slugged $175000 for the new Corvette when it arrives here soon. The base model starts at $60000 in North America. The Camaro has to be converted to RHD explaining its inflated cost but the Corvette is coming already right hook. WTF.
With the Stinger being $50000 for the top model in North America, it makes the mid engined supercarish 369kw V8 Corvette a bloody bargain me thinks. I'm going to immigrate.

It’s the Australia tax mate. You know the bullshit price mark up that companies put on goods they sell here. Given Holden (GM) have become just an import company here you’d think they’d want to drop prices of their vehicles to be able to compete in our market. I know a lot of people thought the ceasing of local production would mean better access to US vehicles. But they still continue to slug us with ridiculous price mark ups that are almost double or in some cases more than double what they sell for in the US. And they wonder why brands like Kia and Hyundai continue to increase market volume while Holden & Ford circle the drain. It’s not just cars though, it’s most things, just look at the stupid high prices for iPhones etc, even the App Store charge us more for apps than they do overseas.

The corvette may also hit the luxury car tax that our do nothing government refuses to remove. That tax was to give locally produced cars a chance against mainly the European models but there are no locally produced cars anymore so no need for the tax yet the government refuse to remove it.

The conversion to Aud brings it up to $88000 but still way short of $175000. Yes of course the government have their hand in there. They don't like removing any tax even when the justification for it has ended. That price of $88000 brings it in line with the Supra. I know what I would buy if I had the choice.

@Nasscar do you know anyone in the US ? if you did could pop over for a " holiday " buy a Corvette, keep in at a friend's house for a year, that way pay less tax on import duties so Iv'e heard. Maybe our US friend's could confirm this ?

That sounds like too much hard work. Plus the US version will be left hand drive. Plus I don't know anyone over there. Yes, from the latest MOTOR magazine, the base model is estimated to be $175000. Eye watering isn't it. I do like the look of it and the reviews have been favourable but for that price, I will be sticking to the Stinger.

It's high on my list to replace the Stinger next year, but I'll probably borrow my daughters' C5 and "live with it" for a while to see how it goes.

Probably better off renting a C7 for a couple of weeks. There's been way too much evolution with the Corvette in the last quarter century to get a good feel for the C8 by driving the C5. Hell, even the C7 will feel vastly different when compared to a C8. The C5 is a dinosaur.

I'm concerned about ergonomics, not performance. Her C5 is comparable to the Stinger in performance.

The question is whether I will need a crane to climb out every time I go for groceries.

I am 57 years old and average size. I went the to see the new C8 in Greenville SC last October. I sat in it and got in and out several times. I own a 2002 C5 Z06 and getting in and out is similar and the seat width in the C8 is a lot wider than the C7 and more similar to the C5. What ergonomic questions do you have? I can try and answer them. The only somewhat negative thing that I noticed was the rear window view is fairly restricting.

Strangely enough, although it is a beautiful, $100,000 car, I'm not that interested in it. Corvettes have always been too cheap in the contact points for me which is one of the reasons I chose the Stinger over the Charger/Challenger Scat Pack. The C8 may be the game changer though, and for GM, they definitely need one.

Thx. No specific questions, just need to live with one for a while to know if I would want it for more than just a weekend car, and am fortunate to have one at my disposal.

I might end up getting an older one as a project/weekend car instead. I have three cars, my Stinger is the least driven, my daughter also has three, and her C5 is driven the most.

Yes that is correct, if you have owned the vehicle for longer than 12 months you don't have to pay the import duties/taxes... My sister lives in Kentucky so I have already started looking into this as I am very keen on a Dodge Hellcat or even a DEMON
