Need Help! 3M tape is failing me!

Many years ago I mounted a spoiler on my Acura TL. I used the 3M tape supplied and I was meticulous about the prep & mounting-- it started to come loose in just a few months.

I removed it cleaned the spoiler and car and mounted the spoiler with E6000 adhesive (clear). It never once exhibited any sign of failure in the next 8 years when I sold the car.

I have mounted (& removed) other spoilers with E6000 also. The good thing is that you can remove any object you mount with E6000 and remove the cured adhesive from the paint with NO damage to the finish-- it's NOT easy and NO chemical solvents are needed-- you can rub & peel it off completely.

That E6000 stuff is removable??? It reads like it's basically glue...

that is your problem - the double-sided tape that is included with most accessories is crap. get some REAL 3M tape.

my process for the rear spoiler on my previous car ...
- clean bottom of spoiler and trunk lid VERY GOOD with rubbing alcohol
- apply adhesion promoter to bottom of spoiler
- put the 3M tape on spoiler and fit to trunk lid
- get a towel/blanket to protect the spoiler and trunk lid, put some type of weight on it (i used dumb bell weights), and let it sit for 24-48 hours

my spoiler has been attached for almost 3 years and isn't moving ... AT ALL! LOL

What spoiler is that? It's exactly the design I'm looking for.

well, it was for an Infiniti Q60 lol. ebay ... carbon fiber, had it painted at a body shop to match.

I just ordered a spoiler from Sportwing.com and having read some of the complaints in this thread I sent them an inquiry about what they recommended and asked if they suggested using an adhesive in addition to the two way tape as some installation videos have suggested. Here is their reply (YMMV):

Hello, thank you for contacting us at Sportwing.

We have never had any customers complain to us about the tape or the Spoiler not holding, and we use 3M double sided automotive grade adhesive tape, and also provide Pro Bond adhesive promoter, so this should be more than enough to keep the Spoiler on the vehicle indefinitely.

With this being said, we do not recommend using any other tape or polyurethane, but you could use it if you wanted to. This would void the warranty since the installation would be different than what we recommend, however.

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day!
