Are you sure you have Active Lane Keep Assist activated? Because it seems to me you are describing Standard Lane Keep Assist.
When I have it on Standard, it steps in only to keep the car from leaving the lane. When it's on Active then it will actively keep the car in lane. I can very easily let the car drive itself on the highway. If it's super windy, the steering sensors are fooled and it goes on forever without asking you to keep your hands on the steering wheel. Longest was 10min+ for me.
PS: It has nothing to do with the SCC. They function independently.
