Just curious as to what pads you are referring to? Is this a kit you purchased from Kia?

I'll keep an eye on it and see how it does, but personally I like this idea of doubling up the pads rather than thicker washers, who knows if it'll work better :) . Time will tell.

@jimdr Can you add a "I worked on it myself" option :)

Are you guys adding metal or neopreme washers? Are there rubber washers in this kit? What did you ask the dealer parts guy for?

I got a copy of the TCB. At my dealer they said that this was a parts problem at the factory. Only a limited number of cars got the wrong part, and Kia knows the VIN numbers of all the cars that got them, so you can check your VIN with your service department. Mine wasn't one of them, and I've heard nothing in the 10 miles I've driven so far.

Dealer said my vin was not impacted although I had the hatch noise from day 1 and the new part fixed it.

Yup, same, mine is an early 2019 model, the TSB doesn't appear to apply, but it definitely does.

The one from Kia comes with foam "gaskets" (pads) and thin metal washers.

I purchased a new GT1 Stinger in early October, 2019. From the second I drove off the lot, I heard an occasional rattle/whomp sound from the rear right hatch when going over any significant bumps. I was able to fix it simply by unscrewing/extending the piston in the hatch as far as possible on the right side and tightening/shortening the one on the left side all the way in. It has only been a week, but so far it has completely resolved the issue. Hopefully this might help others.

I used a combination of s/s and a composite washer on both hard rubber stops on the body
. seems ok so far but we're only talking 4000 miles since I took ownership

First I thought some funky suspension component was coming apart for the first few days I heard it. I’d pull over, get out and shake stuff, look under the car, check the spare tire. All the obvious stuff.
Certainly, (I thought to myself) my brand new wonderfully tight no squeak emitting dream machine would ever make such a horrible noise.. So I drove myself nuts for a few more days moving tools and other crap around that I keep in back. I knew it had to be my stuff...
I finally emptied every damn thing out of the car last night, Took it for another drive and that nasty sound was still there.. just a bit louder, and only on the big bumps.
Then it dawned on me. I really ought to do a search on my favorite new website and - BANG here I am :(
I’m one of those guys that doesn’t trust the dealership that I leased from. I am a mechanically inclined perfectionist so I do the stuff myself. I know I can accomplish this task with one of the outlined methods but like others here have stated, really shouldn’t have to do this especially because this issue was clearly identified with the 2018 model year but, whatever. Last time I took my Sorrento into the dealership for a recall, they put the car through their car wash and I ended up with multiple scratches that I didn’t notice until I got home. I always hand wash my cars and never asked them to do this. They said if I made another appointment they would buff the car. F-that.
Took it to friends shop to fix that one. Now I find my 2019 GT with 7000 miles belongs to this funky rattle club.
Awesome:confused:

That is the weirdest part: some hatch rattles go away when it gets cold, and others (yours) the opposite. I have every confidence in yours being resolved in short order. But sorry you have to belong to that "club".

I have a 2019 GT1 that I bought October 28th that had the rattle from day one. I looked into doing the fixes on the forum involving washers and what not but found that those were too big of an adjustment (perhaps 2019s have a updated bump stops/rubber guides). The washer method made the hatch sit higher than the body and the latch didn't fully catch. I ended up, as funny as it may sound, creating a rubber gasket out of a kitchen cabinet kick plate (Lowes part # 234337) for $2.28. Once installed on both sides, the passenger side still sat higher than the body, so I removed that one and left the gasket on the drivers side.Trunk sits flush and no more creaking or rattling. I'm guessing from the factory some hatches have a very slight misalignment where the hatch hinges bolts to the body. Adjusting there could fix the issue but trying to align the hatch and bolt evenly would be a nightmare and cause more issues than it solves. Anyway, I hope this can help someone.

Dustin

Last winter I would get some clacks from the hatch only over really hard bumps. I had it pretty much 100% resolved by playing with the adjustment on the screw-in stoppers. I think I ended up with something like 1cm on the left side and 1.5cm on the right which coincidentally seemed to be just the right amount. This winter it is back but I'm struggling to get just the right adjustment. I've noticed there are impressions on the lower bumpers that the ones on the hatch press against, so they are or at least were touching. I wonder if these impressions mean that I need the hatch to go down slightly farther, meaning screw the bumpers in a little further, but then how will this align with the actual latch mechanism.

Maybe adding the spacers into the upper bumpers in the hatch might put them down a bit lower to remain in contact with the lower rubber bumpers, keeping everything in former alignment.

This seems like a balance of the screw in bumpers, the upper and lowers touching the right amount and keeping the latch mechanism where it needs to be. Quite a balancing act...and a nuisance.

The hatch latch assembly on my '18 seems to have too much play. Last week as an experiment, I cut some quarter-inch strips of duct tape and wrapped them around the part that the latch latches to when the hatch is closed, effectively making that part thicker and removing the play. I had to remove a small section of the tape from the upper forward bend to allow some metal/metal contact otherwise the hatch-open warning was displayed on the dash. I'm ecstatic with the results. Finally quiet back there!
