Jerky Cruise Control?

Thanks for responding, Mike. Sucks that they didn't get it figured out. I guess I'll have to take some time off work and bring the car to a service department a little farther south.
Hi ! Wondering if you had any success with the cruise control "surging" ... I too feel the affects of the car ever so slightly. I just bought my Stinger and have not brought into the dealership. Hoping perhaps you have a solution ?

Unfortunately I don't have a solution.

I was hoping the transmission would "learn" itself out of the behavior but it hasn't. In the last week I've put about 1k highway miles on the car and it's started to make me nauseous.

I never bothered bringing it to the dealer because while researching the problem I found that Kia never provided a solution (for the Sorento drivers with the same issue).

My Sorento doesn't have the problem, but the Stinger does. If you have the fuel economy meter on, you can see the throttle constantly pushing and releasing because the fuel economy meter goes back and forth constantly. I would have to think that they could come up with a software update for that.

Well people, I have to say that this one would probably be too annoying to ignore or "just live with it". It depends really on how pronounced it is. I use cruise a lot. And all the time on road trips. It is a life saver, the difference between being relaxed at the end of a trip (or even a leg between gas stops) and being tensed, stiff and even achy. A surging car is just one of the most irritating things in the world! I find such things in cars this expensive inconceivable. And the most annoying thing is that this is a long standing issue spread across many models. What is it about R&D that "they" cannot solve something this basic to the function of an automobile? I am mystified. And sad for anyone who has to go through this!

If it really bothers you, switch to standard cruise. I have found that this correct the issue. What that tells me is, the smart cruise thinks it is seeing something and is adjusting to it.

Nope, I have a GT1 and still have the issue.

Conversely I had Kia's Smart Cruise on my Optima and there were no surging issues .

I have the GT without smart cruise and it does it. It's not very pronounced and i probably would not have noticed it if I didn't read it on here. Seems to be more pronounced going up a slight incline more than flat or a big incline.

@Paul32: Yes, that is what he is saying. GT1s do not have "smart cruise".

If my standard cruise did this it would drive me nuts. And it would make the main reason why I bought the car impossible: to wit: for long road trips when my wife flies somewhere. A non-functioning cruise, or even one that jerks you around, would be impossible to endure for thousands of miles.

I have a GT1 and it has smart cruise. It comes with the Driver Assist package @ $2,000.00

Ah, one of those "orange" options. I didn't get any of those, as far as I know. I certainly don't have the "driver assist package". They all come standard with the GT2. (As I said elsewhere, if the GT2 came with a 360 degree camera, and I knew then what I know now about that, I'd likely have gone GT2 just to get that; and of course, then I'd have "smart cruise" as an option.)

The package gave me everything, except the power hatch, that I wanted and was still $4k cheaper. So I never considered the GT2.

Are you saying you don't have smart cruise and it still happens?

Correct. GT1 w/o drive wise and it surges. It goes bonkers when going uphill.

I couldn't live with that. I would take it in regardless of what they have done in the past. Cruise Control has been around for years, should not be an issue on the Stinger.

GT without adaptive CC, and I notice it too. Really bad on hills. I think it's just the car trying to find a gear. I'll shift it into manual mode next time and see if it makes a difference. Long trip in a few weeks and I'll test out a bunch of stuff.

I could understand it if you are driving in the mountains. How big are the hills? Should be able to tell if it is down shifting. Are you in Sport Mode?

Yeah, mountains and in comfort. It'll shift gears like 6 times going down a hill by my work, too fast? Downshift. Now you're too slow on a level spot? Shift up, put on the gas. Oh, downhill? Downshift and slow down. All within 10 seconds.

On flat straights it's still a tiny bit jerky, but once you're above ~60, it's fine. It's like the car can't put less than 10% on the throttle or something, so it'll coast, and then hit the gas too hard.

I know the hill shifting thing is it's own issue, but I've taken ~5 cars down that road, and the Stinger is by far the worst.

Mine does this a little but no where near that level. Just some minor surging, more so when going up a grade as others have mentioned.
I noticed it on the 300 mile highway trip home after buying the car. I was testing out Eco mode. Did not feel it nearly as much in Comfort.
Glad to see that I'm not going nuts, and am not alone in this world.

I'm guessing that Kia will assert this is "normal operation". Manual gate should fix it. But there are times when you won't want to do the shifting and will just have to accept the CC shifting back and forth. Is that right? Is the surging caused by anything else?
