Let me first say this is not a JB4 vs Lap3 nor a place for people and companies to bash one other or other members.
This is simply my own first hand comparison between the two.
Had my JB4 BT w/ plug & play fuel wires on my new 2020 Stinger GT RWD, at just under 3,000 miles on the car, Dec/2020, now has over 22,000 miles.
Been on Map 2 93 oct gas.
HKS plugs gapped to 0.022.
Mods are JA snorkels, K&N intake, AP FMIC, MBRP exhaust, 20mm spacers, lowered on H&R -2 springs, stock primary and secondary DP, stock TCU, stock wheels and tires PS4, probably 10K miles on them tires. (2nd set)
Never had any issues running this setup as my daily driver, no limp mode.
Got a dragy just for this comparison.
For this comparison. I tried to keep everything the same.
Same 2 strips of road for 1/4 mile runs, same time of night. Same amount of gas in the tank (1/2 tank), same weight in the car. (Rocking 2 car seats in the back )
Also got an ethanol tester to make sure I got correct amount of Ethanol.
For this comparison, I did:
JB4 map 2 93 oct
JB4 map 4 E30
Lap3 1.5 93 oct
Lap3 1.5. E30
Also I let the car shift on its own to keep everything the same.
Kept traction & stability control on, due to I’m already spinning.
I probably did 6-8 1/4 miles pulls for each group of test.
When the Lap3 ECU was in, the JB4 was set to Map 0 and the fuel wires are disconnected.
I’ve keep 4 logs of each group and 4 0-60 times and 4 1/4 mile times.
0-60:
JB4 Map2: 4.74, 4.77, 4.84, 4.89
JB4 Map4: 4.59, 4.68, 4.77, 4.86
Lap3 93: 4.95, 4.98, 5.07, 5.10
Lap3 E30: 4.90, 5,00, 5.08, 5.09
1/4 mile:
JB4 Map2: 12.69, 12.74, 12.76. 12.83
JB4 Map4: 12.53, 12.57, 12.61, 12.61
Lap3 93: 12.73, 12.75, 12.82, 12.82
Lap3 E30: 12.54, 12.59, 12.66, 12.69
I think my tires were the factor here. By the time was to test the Lap3, my tires were getting bald
By the time I was done testing Lap3, the tires were bald.
Last year May, my 1st time at a drag strip, on a 1/8 mile track, I consistently ran 8.1-8.15, on JB4 Map2 93 oct, at that time I did not have the AP FMIC.
My best 1/8 on the dragy was 8.29 overall for these run.
The streets are no were sticky like the track.
About 3 weeks later, I dyno the Stinger at our Tampa Bay Stinger Dyno day.
Full tank of E30
I did 4 pull, 1 & 2 on JB4 Map4 and 3 & 4 on Lap3
They were only able to print 3 pulls per sheet, so Sheet 1 was pulls 1,2,3 and Sheet 2 are pulls 2,3,4.
See you can see the Lap3 made so much more power.
Dyno numbers
JB4
Pull 1 451/474
Pull 2 446/489
Lap3
Pull 3 478/522
Pull 4 482/524
My butt dyno, Lap3 is smoother power band from start to finish and feels no delay, it just wants to go. No maps to switch between. It adapts to the fuel type and the car.
JB4 install was a breeze. Hardest part is getting the OBD wire through the firewall. Or hiding all the wires. Customer support is top notch. I had to replace the master chip, no problem getting to the issue, they always help with your logs.
Lap3 install was pretty simple too. 2 of 3 screws holding the ECU bracket are harder to get too. Had to remove the plastic part getting in the way to get to one of the screws due to I just have very basic tools.
When I 1st receive the ECU. It wouldn’t pair to the car, tried and tried, swap back the oem ECU would work, then tried again with lap3 ECU, still would not pair, messaged David from lap3.
Had me send back the ECU to get reflash, about 1 week later got the ECU back to me.
This time it paired in the first try.
Question, should you get JB4 or Lap3 ECU. Or upgrade from JB4 to Lap3 ECU
For me it’s a yes and no.
I won my Lap3 1.5 ECU in a raffle.
Join this FB group, (Shameless plug) Kia Stinger Waffles and Giveways.
If I didn’t have won it, I would have not bought it out right. It’s $2,000 but had a discount code at the time for 10% off. $1,800.
I’m more then happy with JB4 and would have stuck with it if I didn’t win the ECU.
I daily drive my Stinger, 90% is going from home to work and picking up kids from school.
I don’t track, drift, auto x the Stinger. I’m not out for the highest HP not going for the fastest out there. No plans for Primary DP, maybe secondary DP. No plans for WMI.
Question you would have to ask yourself. Is the cost/benefit. What type of driver and what your using your Stinger for.
If your the avg Joe just looking affordable, best bang for you buck, can’t go wrong with JB4.
If you have cash to burn then go Lap3
I have no clue how to read logs.
But I’m more then happy to email my logs to anyone. Just PM me.
Hope this helps you fellow Stinger
